The engine uses the latest technologies to optimize fuel economy, improve control and accuracy, and reduce environmental impact.

The common rail system (CRS) optimizes fuel economy and reduces operating costs*. High-pressure injection atomizes fuel into finer particles which burn more completely. It results in improved fuel economy and lower cost of operation.

The electronic control unit (ECU) provides optimum fuel control and accuracy. ECU monitors and controls the engine. It continuously monitors engine conditions and adjusts the fuel delivery accordingly to ensure optimum performance and emissions.

The new engine comes with an after treatment system. The system operates automatically. The exhaust filter consists of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which captures particulate matter (PM) contained in the exhaust gas. Using a natural cleaning process, most of the PM trapped in the exhaust filter is eliminated by the heat of the exhaust stream generated by normal use. In situations of low temperature, engine speed or load factor, an active cleaning cycle is initiated. In this cleaning cycle, the exhaust gas temperature is raised by injecting additional fuel during the exhaust stroke of normal vehicle operation to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC).

After many hours of use, the exhaust filter may require an ash removal service.

NOTE: *As compared to engines not using CRS technology.

DPF cleaning

Depending on the load that the tractor is under, as well as ambient temperature, humidity, and engine speed, the DPF may build up with particulate matter, thus requiring cleaning. Filter cleaning is determined by one of three conditions:

  • A prescribed time-based estimation of needed filter cleaning
  • DOC/DPF pressure sensors
  • A particulate matter buildup estimation based on load conditions

Once one of the three conditions has been met, filter cleaning will occur.

There are three different types of filter cleaning processes:

  • Passive filter cleaning
  • Active filter cleaning
  • Parked filter cleaning

Passive filter cleaning

Passive filter cleaning occurs naturally when the engine is generating enough heat to oxidize particulate matter. This automatic process occurs continuously during normal operating conditions. No tractor icons or symbols appear on the display during passive filter cleaning.

NOTE: Passive filter cleaning requires no operator involvement, and there is no interruption to tractor operation.

Active filter cleaning

If conditions (temperature, load, or speed) for passive filter cleaning cannot be achieved, then PM is removed using active filter cleaner.

To achieve the required conditions, exhaust temperature management (ETM) manages the initiation and duration of active filter cleaning. ETM can adjust numerous engine parameters and/or inject a small quantity of fuel into the exhaust stream for a short duration. The fuel turns to vapor and chemically reacts with the catalysts in the DOC to create heat to oxidize PM.

It is important to note that at no time is the fuel in the DOC/DPF ignited, and there is no flame within the DOC/DPF.

Like passive filter cleaning, active filter cleaning requires no operator involvement, and there is no interruption to tractor operation.

Parked filter cleaning

In some instances where passive and active filter cleaning have not fully cleaned the PM from the system, a parked filter cleaning may need to take place. Most likely, the only time a parked filter cleaning will need to occur is when automatic filter cleaning has been disabled for an extended period of time and multiple warnings to engage filter cleaning were ignored or if the tractor has been used during light load conditions. Additionally, when the automatic filter cleaning process has been deliberately interrupted multiple times, or if active filter cleaning has failed numerous times due to a failed component, a parked filter cleaning may be requested. In these rare instances the operator will have to park the tractor and start the filter cleaning process.

The parked filter cleaning process needs to be activated based on usage and operation of the tractor. The process will take approximately 30 minutes. See operator’s manual for more details.

This system constantly monitors the soot level of the tractor, making sure the tractor is always in peak performance condition. This ensures high performance at all times.

NOTE:  Number of hours since last regeneration and soot level percentage viewable on LCD display.

The 12/12 PowrReverser transmission is available on the 4M and 4R Tractors.

The PowrReverser transmission offers a hydraulically shifted forward-to-reverse transmission. This allows for clutchless shuttle shifting between forward and reverse with one lever for quick and easy direction change.

  • PowrReverser transmission does not require the operator to use the clutch to shift between forward and reverse

The PowrReverser transmission features a hydraulically actuated wet clutch. Two multi-disk clutch packs (one forward and one reverse) are hydraulically engaged when the directional (reverser) lever is placed in either the forward or reverse position.

Each clutch pack consists of three large, 5-in. diameter clutch disks that operate in oil and are oil-cooled, allowing excellent heat dissipation and extended clutch life.

 A true-speed cruise control is optional equipment on 4M Tractors with eHydro transmission. Cruise control is electronically engaged and disengaged and is located on the operator console to the right of the operator.

  • Maintains desired forward speed without pressure on the foot pedal
  • Cruise control is set by engaging the switch when the desired speed is reached
  • A speed sensor also allows the tractor to maintain preset speed driving up and down hills
  • To disengage the cruise control, either:
    • Apply pressure to the turn brakes opposite the eHydro pedals
    • Disengage cruise control switch
    • Briefly depress the reverse control pedal
LoadMatch™ power management system

LoadMatch is a standard feature on the 4M Series Tractors.

 

If torque requirements increase significantly, the transmission will reduce the tractor's drive speed to compensate for the increased load on the transmission, maximizing torque to drive wheels and minimizing stalls.

 

Controls automatically adjust LoadMatch compensation depending on the tractor’s application. PTO applications require less engine speed fluctuation, therefore adjusting the amount of droop depending on PTO speed. This adjustment increases efficiency and optimizes engine speed and torque output based on tractor application.

 

While typically left on, LoadMatch can be turned off through the center console display.

MotionMatch™ system

MotionMatch, standard on the 4M Series Tractors, is adjustable through the center console display. It offers variable adjustments to either lengthen or shorten the rollout when the HST pedal is depressed or released.

One of the greatest customer concerns involves difficulty in attaching tractor implements. John Deere has addressed this issue with the iMatch Quick-Hitch.

The iMatch Quick-Hitch provides easy hookup and a guaranteed fit for all Category 1 implements that are designed to meet the ASAE Category 1 Standard S278.6 for quick-attach hitches.

  • All implements require a set of bushings in order for the attachment to fit and work properly with the iMatch Quick-Hitch. One set of bushings comes with the iMatch Quick-Hitch.

NOTE: The bushing set can be seen in the picture above. These bushings allow the hooks on the iMatch and the pins on the implement to fit together properly. All other implements (box blades, tillers, rear blades, etc.) will require a set of bushings to enlarge the pin to fit with the iMatch hooks. Bushings of different lengths can be found in the parts system or through a bushing supplier (see dimensions below).

This attachment allows for the installation of the dual mid-valve kit on 4M Tractors. With this kit, 4M Tractors can utilize various implements, such as the 440R Loader, as well as other hydraulically-driven implements. This kit allows the 4M Tractor to operate hydraulically and function similar to the 4R Open-Station Tractors.

 

The kit contains the dual mid-valve, loader joystick, hydraulic lines, and all fittings / hardware that is required.

This kit provides light to the rear of the tractor for evening work.

 

For open-station tractors only, this kit contains individual light.

NOTE: Kit includes one rear light.

NOTE: Both the rear- and forward-work lights are compatible together and with the light-brush guard kits. The light kit contains a two-to-four pigtail that plugs into the main harness, as if only plugging one set of lights, providing two sets of plugs to use for forward and rear-work lights. The forward light is installed on top of the brush guard, and the rear light is installed inside the ROPS using the bolt holding the light and brush guard on.

NOTE: For 102E3 and 1026R Tractors – kit interference during backhoe operations (mounted inside ROPS) – use LVB25546 forward-light kit as an alternative.

The forward-lighting kit provides extra visibility when working in dark conditions. Lights attach to the brush guards located on the rollover protective structure (ROPS). Each kit contains two lights.

 

NOTE: Requires BLV10400 warning light brush guard kit and LVB26026 light kit harness. Not compatible with LVB25547 rear work light kit (1023E).

 Rollover protective structure (ROPS) mounted LED work lights

An optional LED work light kit is available for all open-station compact utility tractors. These lights provide extra visibility when working in dark conditions and have 180-degree rotation to face forward or backward. The kit contains two lights and the mounting hardware required for installation.

This lighting kit is mounted to the warning light brush guard kit, which is mounted to the ROPS and requires attachment BLV10400 for installation.
  
The halogen work light kit attachment is still available (LVB25546).

One of the greatest customer concerns involves difficulty in attaching tractor implements. John Deere has addressed this issue with the iMatch Quick-Hitch.

 

The iMatch Quick-Hitch provides easy hookup and a guaranteed fit for all Category 1 implements that are designed to meet the ASAE Category 1 Standard S278.6 for quick-attach hitches.

  • All implements require a set of bushings in order for the attachment to fit and work properly with the iMatch Quick-Hitch. One set of bushings comes with the iMatch Quick-Hitch.

 

NOTE: In the picture above, you see the bushing set. These bushings allow the hooks on the iMatch and the pins on the implement to fit together properly. All other implements (box blades, tillers, rear blades, etc.) will require a set of bushings to enlarge the pin to fit with the iMatch hooks. Bushings of different lengths can be found in the parts system or through a bushing supplier (see dimensions below).

I bought this tractor April 2022. Still has the same issue that it had when I bought it. Dealer has had all the cylinders on loader rebuilt. Brought back with barrels on cylinder’s scared up from being in a vice.Dealer came again and got tractor and rattle can painted scars. Loader still leaks down just like it did on day one. You can hear the control valve chattering as the lines are filling back up with hydraulic fluid. This is the third time l have reviewed this tractor. Read the first two reviews to get the full picture.

Bought in April. This is in addition to earlier review. After last review Dealer came and got tractor in late Oct. Told me that now they were going to fix loader & exhaust pipe witch is hitting side of hood. Finally brought a loaner tractor. Then sold loaner and brought mine back with 4 loaner cylinders on loader. They have sent my 4 cylinders to 2 different machine shops and now a hydraulic repair shop.The loaner cylinders leak down just like mine. I have asked them to buy back tractor but they refuse.I wanted to support an American company by buying this tractor.That was a mistake. Evidently they are not going to support me. Don’t buy thinking you are getting the old John Deere quality.

We went from a South Korean made 24 hp (it was a great machine, until it broke) to the JD 4044M. There is no real comparison. JD is well built with plenty of power for our needs. Lifts round hay bales with ease, mowes our 10 acres in 25% of the time, and never backs down from any challenge we give it. We highly recommend. Our sales people at Fields in Clermont, FL could not have been better (will leave a review on their site), and JD financial could not have been easier to work with. John Deere will have our business moving forward.

I purchased this tractor new a couple of years ago and the dealer cannot get the tractor to shift into forward without snatching me and the equipment. It doesn’t matter if you use the power reverser or the clutch to shift. A technician came out to repair it, and after 30 minutes, he said that it won’t ever shift smoothly. Everything else about the tractor is fine. I just don’t know how long it will last without being shook apart. If you look at the power reverser and it jerks when you shift it….run away.

Gets the work done

Bought this last November to maintain 2 acres in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I have a steep hill and slopes to maintain and I'm able to work all of it with this tractor in low gear 4-wheel drive. It's small enough to fit through tight sections and big enough to get the work done quickly. I purchased pallet forks and am able to move a 2000 lb load in and out of the back of my pickup truck with it. I also have a 12" auger and the PTO is able to drive it all the way down and the rear hydraulics can pull it out of the hole. This tractor does as advertised and met or exceeded all my expectations.

GREAT UPGRADE!

We recently upgraded from a Mahindra Max 25 that we've had for 8 years. Really needed more horse power and capacity to do 100% of what we needed.We went with this model for a number of reasons.1) Had the horse power and lifting capacity. 2) Dealer is 10 miles down the road. 3) Have a farmer friend with decades of experience with Deere. 4) Ease of operation and maintenance. 5) It's big but not too big to fit in a standard garage with the ROPS down. Handles 1400 lb square bales with the pallet forks with no problem. I do have 1000 pounds of ballast in the ballast box off the I-Match quick hitch. Handles all our pasture/Manure needs with ease. Very fast change over between implements. In my opinion everything works well. The only thing that I have a small problem with is that I'm too short to fill the fuel tank with fuel cans without a ladder. (not Deere's fault) Not an issue though because I do own a ladder. LOL Great tractor for our needs.

I have been looking for a tractor for some time and the 4044m fits the bill. I have used a Kioti DK40 for years, but this tractor is in another class! Using it to cut 10 acres of heavy grass with MX6 and it works great. The Power Reverser transmission is excellent. I would have given the tractor 5 stars on quality, but there were some retainers for the grill assembly left off at factory, but my dealer Heritage Tractor took care of promptly! The tractor costs more than some, but you get a nice piece of equipment that should last years to come. The fuel gauge is awkward in its location behind driver, but works well.

Perfect for my needs

Bought this to work on my ranch and around my other property. Use it for shredding, box blading, rock raking, and wood chipping. Havent had any issues doing what I needed to do within reason. Added some lights and a canopy and can work day or night. Have a little over 200 hrs on it and so far so good. Keep the dust/grass clippings out of the radiator to keep the temps down, they build up fast when its dry like it has been lately. Bought a woodmax 8800 chipper and it runs it perfectly. The 4wd keeps moving when box blading, cant imagine not having 4wd. My brother-in-law has a 3038 and although he loves his he mentioned the huge power difference between the two. Oh another must, bucket teeth. If you want to do any real digging, gotta have them. This is my first tractor, so take this review for what its worth, but I am VERY happy with my purchase.

I love this tractor. I was used to using a Bobcat, which I loved to clean my horse pen. My husband, seeing me climb in and out, took me to our JD dealer where he had looked at compact tractors. I drove the 4044M and loved it. Everything is sooo easy to access and get on and off of, the quick change features are simple. Literally takes me 3 minutes to take the loader off and put the bale spear on. Easy to manhandle with female hands.
