Best Skid Steers for the Money

Trying to decide which skid steer is the best investment for you? Ultimately, the answer largely depends on the environment you will be using the machine in and the type of jobs you will be doing. For example, skid steers are designed more for working on compacted surfaces, while compact track loaders (also called track skid steers) are better suited for loose dirt surfaces. We’ve selected the small frame and full size skid steer and compact track loaders we think will give you the best value for your dollar.

Small Frame

Equipped with fuel-efficient engines, John Deere's small frame skid steers are great machines to add to your rental fleet or operation. The two machines we listed below are two of the most versatile skid steers and compact track loaders. The main difference between the 318G Skid Steer and 317G Compact Track Loader is their rated operating capacity (by 180 lbs) and their operating weight, but otherwise, these machines are largely the same. Their controls are easy to learn and simple to use so operators of any skill level can be confident operating them. Their small size makes them great for people who will be frequently transporting them between job sites. These machines are ideal for working in tight spaces and doing jobs such as landscaping, warehousing, and light dirt work.

Full Size Frame

John Deere's full size framed skid steers and compact track loaders are the machines you need for heavy duty work, whether that's demolition, roadwork, heavy hauling, or clearing thick brush. These machines have the power and working capacity to tackle most any task you put it up to. The main differences between the 330G Skid Steer and the 331G Compact Track Loader is the rated operating capacity (of only 100 lbs different) and the operating weight, which is to be expected because the tracks setup weigh more than tires. These two machines are just one step down from the most powerful large frame skid steers but are capable of taking on the majority of the same jobs while having a lower price point.
