42A Mower Deck 42A Mower Deck

The 42-in. (107-cm) Accel Deep Mower Deck is a stamped-steel, deep, flat-top design that delivers excellent cut quality, productivity, cleanliness, durability, and versatility. Optimal performance and dispersion of clippings is provided, even at faster mowing speeds or in tall grass:

  • 4.97-in. (12.6-cm) deep throughout the entire deck shell for optimum mowing, mulching, and bagging performance
    • Optional MulchControl™ system provides superior mulching performance and versatility
  • Stamped-steel design eliminates sharp edges and corners where material can build up and diminish mowing performance
  • Mower deck suspended from the vehicle for a smooth and level cut
    • Adjustable mower wheels, positioned just above ground level, help reduce scalping
  • 0.25-in. (6.4-mm) cut-height increments allow the mower to be set at the desired cut height
  • Compatible with efficient 6.5-bu (230-L) two-bag cut-and-throw material collection system

Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:

  • Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
    • Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
  • Clean flow of material out of discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
  • Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal recutting, and an even distribution of clippings.
Productivity - gets the job done fast
Side-discharge chute on Accel Deep 42A Mower Deck Side-discharge chute on Accel Deep 42A Mower Deck

Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of recutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:

  • Greatly improves the mower's capacity to maintain excellent mowing performance in difficult mowing conditions and at higher speeds

Large discharge opening is both high and wide to handle more material:

  • Gives a smooth, even discharge of clippings at all mowing speeds
  • Reduces the chance of plugging, especially important when operating in wet, thick, or dense grass and when bagging
  • Cut-and-throw chute has a large, optimized inlet which aids in collecting material by using airflow from the large deck opening
Cleanliness - for the mower and the operator
Accel Deep 42A Mower Deck Accel Deep 42A Mower Deck

The flat-top shape of the deck stamping is optimal for keeping itself and the operator clean:

  • There are few places to catch and hold material on the top and underneath the deck.
    • Top of deck stays cleaner, reducing time and effort needed for cleaning and service
    • Underside of deck is self-cleaning to maintain optimum performance without build-up of material to interfere with the flow of air and clippings
    • Less need to clean and remove build-up of material from underside deck
  • The depth of the Accel Deep Mower Deck minimizes the amount of material that escapes from the front of the deck
    • Limited amount of material to drift onto the operator and mower deck
    • Even flow of material discharged out the chute, less recutting results in larger pieces that are less likely to end up on the operator
    • Mulching prevents the discharge of material completely and MulchControl makes mulching a practical solution for most mowing situations.

Cleaning a mower deck, both top and bottom, is one of the most frequent maintenance activities:

  • The flat-top design reduces places for material to build up and makes material that does collect easy to remove.
MulchControl option

The MulchControl system for the 42A Mower Deck is an optional field-installed attachment and makes mulching practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer use
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings
Mower wash port Mower wash port

Superior durability is designed in

Mower deck wheels are double captured Mower deck wheels are double captured

The 42A Mower Deck has strong spindle pockets, to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough service:

  • Ribs in the deck shell add strength where it is needed.
  • The 42A has a 16 percent heavier overall weight than the Edge™ Xtra 42-in. (107-cm) Mower Deck that it replaces.

Mower wheels are double captured:

  • Provides greater strength and durability for longer, trouble-free life.
  • Single-bolt adjustment makes setting wheels to the correct height for the cutting height quick and easy.

Low-tension belt-drive design reduces the side load on the engines lower bearing and mower deck bearings for longer life.

Rolled outer edge of the deck provides extra strength and protection.

Dual-stage E-coat and powder-paint coatings provide extra protection from rust.

Versatility - easy to change between side discharge, mulch, and bagging modes
Rear MulchControl baffle (A) that must be removed for bagging Rear MulchControl baffle (A) that must be removed for bagging
Rear MulchControl baffle removed to allow for chute installation Rear MulchControl baffle removed to allow for chute installation

The 42A Mower Deck is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another:

  • With the optional MulchControl system installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side discharge to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever.
  • The cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with MulchControl installed by removing the rear MulchControl baffle (A) before installing the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.

MulchControl handle MulchControl handle
  • The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
    • The operator is required to get off the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • Changing from mulching to side discharge or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

  • Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • Usually side-discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
  • Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl still mulches about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired
How MulchControl works
MulchControl baffle open MulchControl baffle open
MulchControl baffle closed MulchControl baffle closed

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material passes through the discharge opening.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is closed, the material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.
6.5-bu (230-L) rear bagger
Z315E equipped with optional rear bagger Z315E equipped with optional rear bagger

An optional 6.5-bu (230-L) cut-and-throw rear bagger material collection system (MCS) is available for use with the 42-in. (107-cm) Accel Deep Mower. It provides an efficient means of collecting grass clippings and leaves.

The hopper design provides modern styling, great bagging performance, cleaner operation, and easy-to-empty bags:

  • 6.5-bu (230-L) capacity
  • Easy-to-attach lower chute
  • Air exhaust duct
  • Convenient spring-latch
  • Airflow fill indicator
  • Quik-Tatch™ mounting
  • Sealed hopper top
  • Loose-knit bags available
Mower blades

High-lift bagging blades are included with the chute. They provide optimum performance when bagging in difficult conditions, such as when the grass is moist, dense, or long:

  • High-lift bagging blades also work well when side discharging material.

Mulching blades are included with the MulchControl attachment. They can be used for mulching, side discharging, and bagging in most conditions.

For use on perfectly flat land only.

2/5

The z320R us really designed for only perfectly flat lawns. The rear "turf tires" do not allow one to miw on any hill without thecrusk if sliding. Even though the product literature says it can handle a 13% grade, in my experience, it couldn't. I replaced the original tires with the same size tractor type tire which did help but did not completely eliminate the sliding. The other problem is that it pulls up all the dirt if you go over a mole hill and covers you with it. Safety goggles and possibly a mask are required. This mower is a great disappointment after the D110 lawn tractor I previously had.

I bought my Z320R-ZTrak, 42A in July 2024. It is my first zero turn mower and have enjoyed its making tight turns that I was not able to do with my old JD 185 Hydrostat tractor. I did not give it 5 stars because I also bought a grass catcher. This catcher does not compare to the old one I had. A lot of the catcher is made out of plastic where my old one had metal bag holders and the lid was made of more durable material..

Excellent mower. I chose the Z320R because it has the premium engine and it’s got all the bells and whistles (comfy seat, arms rests, headlights…etc) for far less than adding them to a lower priced model later. It provides an excellent cut at a fair price.

ZTrack Experience

3/5

Never having driven a ZTR mower, it has taken a fair amount of time to get used to the driving. Still think I’m not totally comfortable with it. Also, even though the deck is 2” narrower than my previous deck, I’m still surprised at how bulky the mower is, especially with the side discharge flap lowered. (My old mower was rear discharge.)That makes maneuvering around the obstacles in my yard somewhat problematic.

I am impressed with the power of the mower. However, I am a little frustrated that the rear wheels do not have good traction when making turns on slight inclines, causing slipping/sliding and bald places on my lawn. As I have only mowed four times with this mower, my learning curve for operation may a contributing factor. My old Cub Cadet zero turn mower ( with a steering wheel) did not do this.

i like the ease of use but not happy with the bagger that we purchased with it.It does not pick up clippings like they showed in the videos. I have to clean the top of the mowing deck after each use(about half a bags worth) Maybe part of the reason for such an average score was the fact i purchased it from HD and their delivery company lost one front weight. Also the instruction manual was/is hard to understand.I am pretty mechanical and the manual was very vague.Yes i installed the high rise blades that came with it, but i have a few parts I still don't know where they go. the assembly videos do not help.

The mower provides a pretty good cut. I am really disappointed in the amount of time I have lost on the maintenance of the machine. It reduces cut time but I have had to put several hundred dollars into nuances in only 13 hours of cut time. From tires not holding air to the drive belt popping. The repairs aren’t not even simple repairs. I will have to dismantle the entire machine to replace it. The warranty doesn’t make it easy either if you don’t register on the day you purchase it you will have a hard time filing a claim. I just expected more from a reputable brand.

I purchased the Zero Turn Z320R about a month ago and am generally pleased with the mower. It came with a trailer hitch, but the hitch was not installed. I was going to install it myself until I realized how much of the rear end had to be disassembled to install the hitch. I think this should be done before delivery by the dealer. Also, the mower pulls to the right when full forward on both levers and it doesn't back evenly, I know I can adjust this but also think the dealer should do this before delivery as part of normal pre-sale checks.

My Dream Machine - the John Deere Z320R

5/5

Purchased my 320r zero turn just over a month ago. Have accumulated 8 hours on the machine and it's performed admirably. I like the adjustable motion control bars. This machine with the Kawasaki engine is very powerful - grass height is no stumbling block for this green machine. Seating setup is simple and comfortable and the steering control is very precise. Altho' I haven't needed to access the engine yet, everything is reachable and easy to get to. Oil changes will be a breeze. The 320r cuts evenly and height adjustment is as simple as pressing the release pedal and dialing in the required setting from 1 1/4 to 4 1/2 inches. I purchased the mulching setup when I get the mower as I have thick St Augustine grass and I didn't want to spread the cuttings all over. The mulching system is simply adjusted with a bar handle located on the right side of the deck and easily reachable from the operator's seat. And the mulcher does a fantastic job mulching the clippings into very fine bits before redepositing them into the grass. All in All , it's a dream of a machine and I highly recommend it

Love the 42" deck vs 48"

5/5

Love the 21.5HP Kawasaki Engine on the Z320R 42" Zero Turn. Also like the 42" deck over the 48" deck for getting into tighter spaces and I believe you get a better cut with just two blades on the 42" vs 3 blades on the 48" deck. Cut mowing time in half vs my older John Deere belly deck garden tractor. But, still use the garden tractor from time to time. It's 15yrs old and still runs like a champ.

If cutting deck was moved out in front instead of under operator you could get in closer and be Abel to have better control of cutting area. Eg fence line closer to bushes, yoke with front wheels pivot tooo much when operating making steering causing operator fatigue. I got this mower in April, How ever there are somethings I would change and will do so my self. I have a Zero turn and it is stiff to turn, haven't figured that out yet but I will, next there is two right handed spindles on this mower, so the locknut on the left caches the chainlink fencing, there should have been a bumper bolt on that side, so I will have to drill the hole bigger and put one in. we had a bagger put on and they gave us some other high lift blades that are too much and make a big mess by blowing stuff up in your face. I took those off and installed the original blades and it works great, you don't need the high lift blades, bad blades no no, so don't sell those, oher than that it is a great mower, love it, thanks

Great Mower, bagger has design flaws.

5/5

I was set on buying a lawn tractor & decided to get the zero turn since they make a smaller one that fits in my shed. it is fantastic, much faster than our lawn tractor and learning the controls was easy after the first couple of mowings. The bagger system has some flaws. It is difficult to gauge how full it is, the window in the cover doesn't view the correct location. Once the chute is clogged, it is very difficult to clear it, as it takes tools to remove the chute.

Almost but not entirely perfect

4/5

I like it. Does the job on a 2+ acre area quickly and neatly. Only slightly negative issue is that the engine compartment behind the seat is not covered--a lot of stuff gets kicked into it. I realize this may be an engine cooling issue but there could be a way to deal with it without burning up the engine.

Great mower!

5/5

I bought it a month ago. I've mowed three times. I'm due for the fourth cutting but it's been storming. It cuts beautifully, steers easily, and even runs quieter than my old mower. I like that there is no extra clutch/brake, just the ZTR handles to start, stop, and park. I also like how easy it is to adjust the cutting height. The only drawback to that is the jockey wheels need to be manually adjusted if you choose a height out of the range of them.

Tipsy mower

3/5

I purchased this mower over 1 year ago. It cuts and handles nice. I really like this mower with one exception. If you mower up much of an incline at all and the front wheels lift and it wants to tip back. I have found I need to keep a sandbag at the front to mow. I have an almost flat yard. I see other zero turns in my neighborhood and don't see this issue with them. Disappointing.

Great mower, poor bagger

4/5

The zero turn steeering takes some getting used to if you are coming from a trastional riding mower. Overall excellent quality mower but a little overpriced. The bagger attachment hardware is a cobbled together mess of a puzzle that should be reengineered. It's not very useful for a large yard with leaves with only 2 bags that don't hold very much. Could used a cover over the engine to keep down engine noise and keep debris out. On a scale of 1 to 10 the mower is an 8 and the bagger is a 5.

Exactly What I Expected

4/5

I bought this about a month ago and have used it a couple times now. Overall, I am happy with it as it rides smooth and cuts clean. After quite a bit of research I picked it over others because of the all steel frame which should be more durable. No major issues to speak of but I do wish there was a way to lock to the mower deck in the highest position without having to adjust the cutting height. You have to hold the foot pedal down while in transit and driving up on concrete from the yard. There is also no fuel gauge, which isn't a deal breaker, but you have to pay attention to make sure you don't get too low, or you will be walking back for a gas can.

Purchased (received) my mover in January. Used it for the first time this week. (March 26th). Mower is very tight. Hard to move the handles back and forth. Purchased the bagger as a separate item. Very disappointed. I came into the house filthy. The debris goes everywhere. The bags fill fine, but the debris blows everywhere. I had grass from head to toe and every my pants pockets were filled with dry grass. For the cost of the bagger, I expected much more than what I got. This is the second John Deere Mower we purchased. The first one was much nicer and easier to use. Sorry I didn't check other mowers.

Lowering or raising the deck is so easy now, applying the brakes is a pice of cake, checking the bagger to see if it’s full is just turn around and look in the window, changing oil is a lot easier and cleaner. 5/5

Purchased this unit Oct. 2023. It has proven to be an excellent choice. It has some great features. I have the dealer add a Mulch Kit and I am glad I did. The only thing I don't like is it doesn't have a fuel gauge. You cannot see what the fuel level is without getting off the mower and lifting the seat to look at the tank, that is very inconvenient. Otherwise, I highly recommend this unit. If you haven't owned a ZTrak I must say there is a bit of a learning curve.

Haven’t had a single issue! The mower cuts amazingly and the LED lights are super helpful for when I’m hauling wood in my mower trailer at night! I’m happy with the mower. I bought it for comfort. My z425, which I still use also is hard on my back due to no the harsh ride. The reason for the 4 stars is because the handles are harder to move. I purchased the new mower in July 2023 (under orders from my wife) and have greatly enjoyed it. In the fall I added the mulching kit and it worked wonders. We have 1.5 acres and it is heavily treed, meaning lots of leaves. The mulching kit did a great job, even in those areas which had heavy leaf accumulation. Anyway, I have been very pleased with the mower; it is easy to clean, it has reduced my cutting time in half over a conventional riding mower. It is comfortable and seems to to be built with quality. The ride is comfortable and thus far have experienced no issues.

I bought this mower in May of 2023. It has 4.5 hours on it, and will not run unless the choke is out. It’s in the shop at Schoppa’s in East Bernard over a week now and they told me when I dropped it off it would be 2 1/2 weeks out. Very disappointing new lawnmower won’t run.

Poor service

1/5

The service received before I got was poor!!!! The tractor is great after we put gas in it ! I was supposed to get my new tracker with a full tank of gas that wasn’t the case. Was it even looked at before was delivered I doubt it! They just put it on the truck and delivered it No SERVICE done at this store !!!! I just it works next season when we go to use it!!!!!!
