Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.

48A MulchControl handle

The optional MulchControl system makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

Creates a beautiful looking lawn
Smaller grass clippings disappear into the lawn canopy
Reduces fertilizer needs
Grass clippings are not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
No need to dispose of bags of clippings

How MulchControl works

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

The MulchControl system includes an adjustable MulchControl baffle near the discharge chute and fixed baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
The MulchControl handle is on top of the mower deck and is used to open and close the MulchControl baffle.
When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material flows freely out the discharge deflector or into a material collection system.
When the MulchControl baffle is closed, material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
For operators who usually side discharge, but would like to close the chute to control clippings in some areas
For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
For operators who collect clippings but want to go farther before emptying the material collection system

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings.

MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl still mulches about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired

When bagging with MulchControl on a 48A mower deck, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower runs without material when the baffle is closed.

When bagging with MulchControl on a 42A mower deck, the cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl blades. However, the rear MulchControl baffle (A) needs to be removed to install the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.

MulchControl compatibility

Each MulchControl system is an optional field-installed attachment and includes everything needed for handle actuation: baffles, handle, and mulch blades.

CAUTION: Children or bystanders may be injured by rotating blades. Before traveling forward or rearward:

Carefully check the area around the machine.
Disengage the mower before backing up.

NOTE: Backing up while the mower is engaged is strongly discouraged. RIO should be used only when operating another attachment or when the operator deems it necessary to reposition the machine with the mower engaged.

Stop forward travel.
Look behind the machine to be sure there are no bystanders.
Push and hold in the RIO switch while depressing the reverse pedal slightly.

NOTE: If the mower or other attachment stops while repositioning the machine, return the attachment engagement switch to the off position. Start engine and engage mower. Begin again with step 2.

Release the RIO switch and reposition the machine as the machine begins to move rearward.
Resume forward travel. The mower or other attachment should continue operating.
Repeat procedure to position the machine again.

7P Poly Utility Cart

Every owner of a John riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials including firewood, lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

7P Poly Utility Cart

The cart has a premium molded, high-density polyethylene box construction.
Compression molding process allows polyethylene to be the optimum thickness in all areas for superior strength and durability.
Polyethylene body will not rust or dent; it stays looking new longer.
0.75-in. (2-cm) x 2-in. (5-cm) stake pockets are molded in to make the addition of side extensions easy.
Two vertical 0.75-in. (2-cm) molded channels on each side allow easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
Ribs in the box bottom add strength and prevent the shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; there is no tailgate to loosen or remove.
Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment.
Pneumatic tires provide turf tread for good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance.

A convenient foot pedal dump release kit, LP48017, which now comes standard on all 10P and 17P carts is available to retrofit existing poly carts. This kit allows the operator to use both hands to lift the cart bed for more natural and efficient unloading.

The 17-cu-ft (0.48-m³) capacity 16YS Swivel Cart is unique in the lineup of John Deere carts in that it can be swiveled 120 degrees to either side for easier unloading. The operator can simply pull up next to where they want to dump the material and swivel the cart, eliminating the need to back up the cart.

Cart has premium molded polypropylene box construction.
Polypropylene body will not rust or dent, staying new looking longer.
0.75- x 2-in. (19- x 51-mm) stake pockets are molded in to make addition of side extensions easy.
Two vertical 0.75-in. (19-mm) molded channels on each side allow for easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
Ribs in box bottom add strength and prevent a shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; no tailgate to loosen or remove.

The BUC10126 6.5-bu (229-L) Power Flow grass collection system includes the hopper, chute, and blower. Mower blades are not included, as the bagger works well with either the standard side-discharge blades or mulching blades and the MulchControl™ system. It expands versatility of an S240 Tractor equipped with a 48-in. (122-cm) Accel Deep™ Mower Deck.

NOTE: Front ballast for the tractor is recommended, especially when operating on hills or inclines.

The blower, chute, and fan are molded from high impact polymer:

Overview

The bagger kit can be set up without tools in minutes, provides efficient bagging performance, and has easy-to-empty bags. This is also commonly known as a material collection system (MCS).

Benefits

Bagging

Two durable bags provide a generous 6.5-bu (229-L) capacity.
The lower chute provides smooth airflow to reduce the chance of plugging.
A duct directs air leaving the hopper toward the ground for clean operation.
Loose-knit bags and a large exit duct allow more air flow to provide complete bag filling in wet grass conditions.

Emptying

Monitor bag filling progress through a window; see light coming through the loose-knit bag or watch for grass lying against it.
The hopper lid stays open while you empty the bags.
The bags slide out with a pull and the handles make emptying easy.
The hopper cover automatically latches when you close it.

Additional details

How MulchControl works

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
- The MulchControl baffle, or divider, between the left and middle spindles is about half way down. The height is designed to balance the mulching and side-discharge modes.
- When the MulchControl baffle is open, the divider between the left and middle spindles passes a portion of the material to the discharge opening, along with the material from the middle and right spindle areas.
- When the MulchControl baffle is closed, this material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.

MulchControl handle

The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
- The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
Changing from mulching to side discharging or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
Usually side-discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags
- With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower will run without material when the baffle is closed.

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharge or bagging when needed.

MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired

Bought a mid grade Deere mainly for the quality . I am very disappointed in the mowing and mainly the bagging during leaf season. The mower blows the leaves out of both sides of the deck and leaves a lot behind. The large rear tiires tear up my lawn leaving muddy marks when making sharp turns. In two months the yellow foam seat is ripped in three places and i did not ppuncture or have sharp ob jects in my pocket. While i bought the s240 for the Better Kawasaki engine i am really not impressed ! My neighbor has a cheaper Ariens and his lawn looks like it was vacuumed during leaf season ! Going to get a Toro Zerp tirn next spring!

Purchased s240 to replace l155 ftom home depot. S240 lacked power, height and straight cut of the older JD. As some others have said, seat rips after only several sittings. Cut of blades with 42 " mow deck is uneven. As other said it may be because of lack of enough mower deck wheels. Mulch capability works well on the mower. Cost more. So save your money.. Don't see the reason to buy another s240 over the big box. Kawasaki engine holds up well as the B&S motors. Just take care of both.

Bought the S240 new this spring and used it all summer. Cutting on flat straight terrain it's fine. Cutting while cornering or on a slight slope creates uneven cuts and in some cases long divots if you turn the wheel too much. Previously I had an LX172 and in retrospect I should have kept it. I now use my push mower every other cut. The seat has NO shock absorption. The dealer gave me springs but I wasn't able to install them. The hydrostatic tranny has limited power. I need a running start to get up my shed's ramp. It's not steep. The gas tank is way too small. The S240 does provide a comfortable ride.

THIS IS MY FIRST JOHN DEERE AND I BOUGHT IT BASED ON THEIR REPUTATION FOR QUALITY. MY MACHINE HAS LESS THAN 88 HOURS ON IT NOW AND IS THREE YEARS OLD. I KEEP IT GARAGED AND SERVICED, AND EVERYTHING WAS GREAT UNTIL ONE DAY THE ENGINE DECIDED TO QUIT CRANKING. GOOD THING I STILL HAD TWO WEEKS OF WARRANTY LEFT AND THE DEALER REPLACED A RELAY FOR FREE. I THINK THE MACHINE HAD ABOUT 72 HOURS ON IT AT THAT TIME. A FEW HOURS OF RUN TIME LATER I HAD TO GO BACK FOR A 2ND RELAY REPLACEMENT. A FEW MORE HOURS OF RUN TIME AND I HAD TO GO BACK FOR A NEW IGNITION SWITCH. THE NEXT TIME BACK THEY FOUND A LOOSE WIRE CONNECTION THAT GOT THE MACHINE TO START AGAIN LONG ENOUGH TO CUT MY GRASS ONCE, BEFORE IT DIED, AND NOW WILL NOT CRANK. I HAVE DRIVEN OVER 450 MILES BACK AND FORTH TO THE DEALER SO FAR FOR REPAIRS, AND WILL HAVE TO HEAD BACK NOW AGAIN. i AM NOT A MECHANIC, BUT OBVIOUSLY THEY ARE NOT GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM. THE GOOD THING IS SO FAR THEY HAVE NOT CHARGED ME FOR THE REPAIRS EVEN THOUGH MY WARRANTY HAS NOW EXPIRED. Bought this mower in July 2020; have about 7 hours on it and it runs like a Deere. Definitely worth the mark up with the Kawasaki engine and electric PTO. The cut is great, engine is smooth, and handles my yard in half the time compared to the old push mower. Went with John Deere over the competition due to better reviews, more options, and dealer support. If you’re on the edge between getting the E series or the S240, spend a little bit more and do it.

I love my S240. It is comfortable and easy to use. The only complaint I have is that I wish they added more scalp wheels to the 42” deck rather than only two. In my opinion, every deck should have at least 5, one on each corner and one in the middle on the front. Two scalp wheels is simply not enough for most people as most do not have nice level lawns.

traded my 2005 lt 150 john deer that was in good shape at jd dealer. the old mower had a kohler engine that was trouble free. the new 2020 S240 mower has a lot of improvements, electric PTO, twin cyl. mower deck with HD spindles, high back seat , fuel guage, cruise control, avail mulch kit, transaxle to handle torque ov kawasauki engine. it is a very good unit. never had any problems with the old JD mower so i stayed with the brand. KWASAUKI motor has more durability than BRIGS . my neighbor tried it and bought one as well. grass cut is like a carpet and it cuts in reverse which is handy.on my lot of 1.5 acres. i use the new GF6A oil . MOBIL 1. and extended oil filter and TOP TIER regular gas.

After researching numerous models for features and price I decided to purchase the "sweet spot" S240. Same Kawasaki engine and transmission as the 300 series mowers along with a 48" inch ACCEL mower. The only thing I wish it had was a electronic fuel gauge. The fuel gauge does suck on the S240 on down thru the 100 series. Not accurate at all. Very pleased with the Kawasaki vs the Briggs and more quiet with an instant start w/o choke. Turning Radius was a bonus for me. Don't like reverse switch but will get used to it in time. Has regular oil filter and can drain the oil like the 300 series which is good. Mower deck is stout, doesn't jostle or sway and has a good even cut. Overall pleased with the lawn mower. Wife loves mowing with it so problem solved.

Had this mower for 4 years now. It's been a great mower. Love the upgraded engine. It is very worth the money to upgrade from the D-Series. It has 103 hours. Never had a problem out of it. If you keep up with the maintenance, this mower will last a long time. I went with the 42 inch because, at the time, that is all they offered. Just Remember, it is built off the D-Series frame, so it is not the "sturdiest" of mowers but the upgraded power options are a plus. If you take care of it, it will last.

I went to the local dealer rather than the big box store and bought what I thought would be a "top of the line" lawn tractor. The S240 has upgraded features they said. After much waffling back and forth between the S240 and the L170, I decided on the S240. I received it two weeks ago, the day before our first snow storm. After the snow melted and we got three dry days, I used it to pick up the last of the leaves and to mow the side yards on my property. I filled the mower, which turned out to be no small feat. The combination of the filler being under the seat and having the bagger attachment on the back, made it impossible to do alone, as you need a funnel. So I had to have my wife hold the funnel at an angle while I poured the gas. This will be a MAJOR inconvenience. I guess I’ll have to find a different funnel to use, so I don’t need help to fill the thing every time it needs gas. On the plus side: It mowed very well. The bagger works well, except you have NO IDEA how full the bags are without getting off the machine-the clear panel they put at the top of the bagger is useless. For the half hour I used it though, it mowed and sucked up the grass clippings and leaves VERY well. I can’t wait for Spring to come around, so I can spend come quality time behind the wheel. I’ll update with more this spring!

I was surprised how cheaply this thing is made for a tracter that costed almost 3000.00 with a bagger. The tractor has 130 hours on it, so far I am on my 3rd seat they are like paper thin. The gas cap cracked and needs replaced. and the plugs at the end of the front bumper started falling off. I would not buy this unit again. I live in a development have about 15,000 square foot lot (very flat). It cuts nice and is easy to do maintenance on but not well built at all. If I knew all this before hand I would of looked at something else. Also forget the bagger kit if you don't spend the extra $50.00 for a deflection kit as it does not pick up even dry leaves very well without this kit. It should be included with the bagger for almost $400.00.

I owned a Deere LT190 for 15 yrs. i put about 340 hrs on it with its Kawasaki and decided it was time to buy a new Deere, I bought the S240 with the 48 inch deck and 18.5 Kawasaki for my 2 acres here in Florida. The machine cuts fine . I see a few improvements over the comparable LT190's deck - beefier. My only gripe is I have already broken one deck belt at less than 35hrs. The belts are NOT cheap ! The parking knob also fell off ? The machine for whatever reason seems a tad slower too compared to my old LT190 ?????? Anyway we will see if it lasts as long as my 190 did . I had to put on about 2 sets of spindles on my Lt190 in its lifetime ...I hope these S240 deck spindles last - only time will tell.

I've been using the S240 42" deck for over 2 months. So far, I think it's a great lawn tractor! I have .75 acres to take care of and looked at the 100 series initially. However, I chose the S240 due to the factory upgrades over the 100 series which I felt were worth the extra cost. Plenty of power, reasonable engine decibels, cuts amazing, transmission is smooth with very precise speed control, comfortable, and has great visibility over the front hood while driving. I had assumed that prior to delivery, the dealer would run through a check list to ensure that things like a level deck was taken care of. Nope! Not a knock-on JD, but certainly the dealer. Deck was way out of level! I was able to get the deck nice and level with proper anti-scalp wheel adjustment. It really does a nice job cutting the grass! I also bought the mulching kit and installed it last week. It does impact the quality of the cut slightly but nothing to complain about. I’ll keep it on for the fall but will likely take it back off again next spring. It only takes about 15 minutes to install/remove (including the blades). I agree with the reviewers that JD could come up with a tank design which puts the fill cap in one of the fenders. It would be a good design change for the folks using the bagger attachment. Now, on to my only true complaint. The positive camber on the front wheels is too aggressive when turning. I love the tight turning radius and don't want to give that up but when I do a tight turn the positive camber of the front wheels makes the outside edge of the front tire gouge into the ground, ripping out the grass. I don’t see a way to make an adjustment. Is there a fix for this JD? For now, I'll try not to turn as tight as the tractor allows. I didn't have this problem with my old lawn tractor which, when I made tight turns the camber stayed somewhat neutral. Overall, I think it's a great lawn tractor and expect to have it for many years.

I have had my S240 for 2 months now. I really like it. My old rider was given to me from a neighbor. A 1996 red one. What a difference with this new John Deere S240!!! PROS: Quality built - once you sit your honey down you can just feel how well it is put together. SPEED - compared to I had this thing is a Ferrari! ZOOM!!! TURNING RADIUS: Pretty dang sharp! A lot better than I was use to. ERGONOMICS: SIMPLE! You don't need a PHD to figure out how to run this machine. :) MAINTENANCE: Simple schedule to follow. Yes, you can do it yourself. There are a ton of YouTube videos that show step by step. STORAGE: Has a nice compartment and a CUP HOLDER!!!!! Now I have a place to put my.......soda. Ahem. ACCESSORIES: A bunch! I have the deluxe mulching kit installed - love it! Have the bagger which I'll use in the fall. The 7P dump cart - ROCKS! The JD grease gun is nice as well. I also took the extended warranty - for the price you just cant beat the coverage! CONS / THINGS TO KNOW: SPEED & SUSPENSION - If you are like me and your current (old) rider is well broken in you will notice quite a difference. You sit higher, the feel is firmer because the machine is so well put together and I recommend easing into your usage so you dont throw yourself off....lol REVERSE ENGAGE BUTTON: Well, it's for safety so...... In reality it's not THAT inconvenient but it takes getting used to. PARKING BRAKE: In order to have your machine run while not seated the parking brake must be engaged. Another thing you get used to but..... Ugh. TIRE WIDTH VS TURN RADIUS: I wish the tires, from outer of left to right was an inch or two narrower. The turning radius is much sharper than you can cut. What I mean is I now around a tree and firepit, both with curving around and I cant hug it 360° like my old one. I've gotten use to it. Then again, the wider the wheelbase the better the ride. I’m a 3 year owner of the S240 42 inch deck. I have half acre of lawn and a low to medium hill on one side of the house, here is my long term review. This machine is a hybrid of the 100 series and some of the X -Line options. It’s more like 80/20 being more of a 100 series machine. Transmission is K46 not to be used for heavy towing with dump cart or pushing snow, made for mowing on low grade hills and up to 1 acre. If I had to mow more than 20,000 square feet, I would upgrade to a 48 inch deck commercial machine. I prefer to bag the clippings, with sharp high lift blades, the cut is on par with commercial machines. The bagging system is the 100 series bagging system, while it does the job, I have some clippings that blow out of the sides of the plastic cover that goes over bags and fall back to the lawn, just enough to be a nuisance that I can live with. Bagging system design can be improved. Kawasaki motor speaks for itself and it’s the main reason I bought this machine. The two adjustable nuts that are found on the left and right side of the deck for adjustment purposes are invaluable. Never realized how important this was, my previous non JD mower did not have it and it was a nightmare trying to level deck. Parts are overpriced because of JD name. Excellent tuning radius, no need for front bumper, I took front bumper off to gain more clearance when going around trees and shrubs. The reverse override button is a pain but there is a solution for that. All in all this is a very good machine for bagging clippings and side discharge, mulching is very slow. So if you are not looking for a Kawasaki engine like I was, I would suggest to save money and buy a higher end 100 series JD with v twin Briggs and Stratton engine and K46 transmission.

I have wanted a John Deere mower for quite awhile and finally decided it was time. I never did like the way my old Craftsman LT2000 cut. I could only use it on my back yard and had to push mow my front. So I researched the E series when they came out with the quick change oil filters. I thought this would be the one. I too started at the big box store, thinking that the savings would be greater using my store credit card discount. Then I stopped by my local dealer, he offered me a good deal and explained the difference in buying from them vs the box store. There I noticed the S240. For a few hundred dollars over the E130, I could get so much more.I was sold and he found a leftover 2018 that was reduced and with the financing through John Deere, it was a no brainer. Finally got to use it the other day and man what a difference. I can mow the front without gouges and streaks. Yes as someone else stated, the seat switch is a bit touchy and the mow in reverse will take some time getting used to vs the old Craftsman but the cut and ride of the S240 make it worth while. I see many years of happy mowing on my Deere. Thanks to Caleb at Sloan Implement for being patient with me over the last few months while I contemplated which mower to buy.

I had done my research, decided on the E130, it was 100% what I was looking for. Yes I could get another brand for a couple hundred bucks less but I wanted a Deere. I decided I didn't want to buy from Lowe's and last second decided to go to a Deere dealership. I called and asked if they had the E130 and they did. As I pulled up it was already out front and shined up for me (even though it was starting to rain). I talked to the salesperson (Blake) and told him what I needed. He asked if I had checked out the S240 in 42". As I did all my shopping on Lowes.com and the E130 was already at the top of my budget I said I hadn't. He showed me the mower and told me the differences (mainly Kawasaki motor and transmission as well as other upgrades like the seat). It was another $500 over what I was already prepared to spend but I really like Kawasaki as a brand. He talked it up and definitely peaked my interest. I re-iterated how the E130 was already overkill for my yard and he said it was probably the right choice. I decided once I went over $1500 I was going to finance. Deere ain't no fools, they offer 9 months no interest on the E line and 12 months on the S line making the S line cheaper payment which makes the $500 over the cost of the E more palatable. I decided to with it on a bit of a whim, I was going to pick it up the next day. The next day I went in and signed the documents and they already had my mower on a trailer on its way to my house which was great. I got home and fired it up and immediately went into mowing my WAY overgrown wet lawn, which would have taken me HOURS with my push mower trying to mulch it, the Deere had no issues. That seat and the tight super easy steering made it feel like a cadillac of tractors. I am really happy with it 1h and 1 cut into it. After doing the homework I see that it is pretty much the Xline on the Eline chassis. Worth it IMO.

Comfortable riding, but I would like to see larger front tires as what comes on it seems small when mowing in less than perfect ground. We are so disappointed with the S240. Although I have mowed with our Cub Cadet for years, since we “upgraded” to this tractor, it’s been nothing but frustration. Although our dealer has been as helpful as possible, there is a flaw with the seat that means the tractor will not run properly for me because I am not heavy enough for the seat sensor. The dealer states John Deere makes the specifications for 140 lbs. My husband does not have an issue because he weighs much more. We purchased the tractor because of John Deere’s reputation for reliability and because my husband travels a lot with his job. Sadly, that has not worked out for us. The dealer will allow us to upgrade for a price, but it seems important to let people of lighter stature to know that this mower may not work for them.

It took awhile to find one. Two local dealers couldn't get it as JD is now tooling up for the 2018 model. But, the local AgPro had two in stock at another store. I had a smaller 38" Deere and Cub years ago and have been pushing the last 5. It's good to be back in the saddle again. This is just a nice machine. I also got the bagger and installed it myself. Maybe an hour. Took my time. Didn't want to scratch anything up. It's a little taller sit than the old Cub, so there are some areas I don't feel as comfortable, even with the OS! grabs on the rear fenders. Getting used to the 42" deck. The RIO also something new that takes "remembering", but a good feature. Tire pressure of 10 rear and 14 front is max. and a pretty stiff ride. I am lowering to around 8 & 12 psi. X tranny, X seat, Kaw 18.5 engine is quiet and strong, larger tires, $200 cash back thru end of Oct. Fueling is a bit blind as the fuel gauge is in front of the seat. No real mention of this part in Manual. I only use non-eth fuel for my vehicles, especially my small engines. My neighbors have to be a bit jealous. I try not to rub it in.

Total time since new- 8 hours Average time per cut- 45minutes After mowing our lawn for 30 years with 2 Honda HR line self propelled mowers (the first lasting 20 years, still have my 2nd), my wife felt bad that I was taking nearly 3 hours to mow the lawn and told me to just go get a riding mower. So the search began and I was able to quickly narrow my choices down to the S-240 and the Kubota 1880. The 100 series from Deere would have probably worked fine, but I wanted to get the best value for my investment. I purchased the unit with the JD bagging attachment. I'm impressed with the silky smooth operation of the Kawasaki engine. Be prepared to fill the gas tank more often if you run it at full power as it does like the gas! However, it has more than sufficient torque to handle my 1/3 acre with a few small hills if I back the throttle down to the low range of the suggest RPM and I can get 3 cuts (2.25 hours) on one tank with a bit to spare. As for the quality of cut, I am still learning the best "route" to take to minimize scalping. I've lowered the anti-scalping wheels to the bottom register which has helped significantly when cutting on hill sides. I also noticed that the blades did not have a good edge on them so I sharpened them to improve the lower RPM cut quality. I believe Deere can further improve the cut quality and leave the brand X products in the dust by increasing the cutting edge by another inch or so and adding additional off-set blades, similar to the Honda products. The bagging attachment is worth every penny if you are looking for a clean finish. No vacuum needed.

I really like this mower but the constant engine stalling at full speed when the blades are engaged is really turning me against this John Deere mower. I change all filters, spark plugs and the oil well before the changes are due. The fittings are greased on a regular basis. I don't use dirty or old gasoline. I bought this model specifically to get the Kawasaki engine but it seems that Kawasaki engines are nothing to write home about. I hate to say it but I should have bought a Cub Cadet.

My LA 140 suddenly developed transmission issues after 9 years. After reasearching the internet and getting repair costs, I decided it was time for a new John Deere actually built with JD parts. My local dealer (Limestone Farm KY) serviced the LA and service was always fast and reasonable. I wanted a series 300 with a 25 HP and 48 inch deck. However, I couldn't justify the $4K cost. I hesitated to buy the S240 with a 42 inch deck but consumer reports said the tractor with a Kawasaki 18.5 engine and HD transmission was excellent. I mow 2.5 acres. The property frontage is 360 feet with a 40 degree slope. The side property has a 28 degree slope. I always mowed up and down with the 140. total mowing time was 4 hours. I found the S240 to have a very solid feel. Tires were wider and the center of gravity much lower. I was able to mow lengthwise (at slow speed) on both the front and side lawn. Turning radius is much smaller than the 140 and there was much less back and forth manuevering around trees. I don't usually write reviews but I and EXTREMELY happy with this machine. Total mowing time was 2.6 hours and best of all, I mowed the entire lawn with less than a tank of fuel (2.3) gallons vrs 7 gallons with the LA. With no more up and down the slopes, the engine and tranny should last a very long time. I realize the maunal says no slopes over 10 degrees. However, going slowly, the feel with this tractor was wvery comfortable. I tried the LA on the 28 degree slope and stopped immediately as I felt like I would either fall out of the seat or have the tractor roll over me. This tractor is agreat buy at $2439.

i have used the s240 for over a month now and have nothing but praise for it. Cut my mowing time in half. I have a acre and a half of which about half is hilly area. Have had no problems. I've had many mowers of different brands in my 66 years but this is by far the best so far. Cuts great, plenty of oomph, tight turns, and easy to operate. Reverse mowing is a snap and the cruise works nice. Got mine from a Horizon dealership in Missouri Valley Iowa. They did an excellent job of assembly and Ross delivered and explained everything to a tee. I don't bag or mulch so can't comment on that stuff but it discharges the clippings very nice. No wind rows, just a nice even discharge. Easy maintenance too. Only had about a month and a half so if things change I won't be bashful about saying something.

this mower is by far night and day from the D series, nothing against the D, but I tried one and brought it back for the S240 and have been blown away, everything on this mower is better, engine, transmission, deck, tires, seat, parts etc. just did my 8 hour maintenance and it runs like a Deere! love this thing, nothing it can't handle on my 1 acre semi hilly yard with plenty of trees. beautiful, consistent cut. Well worth the investment.

The nice thing about this lawn tractor is it has many of the components from the 300 series . Like the Kawasaki 600cc motor ,heavy duty transmission and the seat. Its really built to last.I mow a half acre of lawn and its perfect. In fact it would easily do much more. I didn't want to get a mower from Lowes,Tractor Co,or Home Depot. I wanted something built better and this tractor is that type of machine. I cut an hour and a half off my lawn mowing time and when I got off the tractor didnt feel beat. Yes you will pay more than a Cub Cadet or Husqvarna but your getting that back in the long run.

John Deere, Still the Best!

I was using a second hand MTD. It worked OK, but the deck was completely rotten. I bought the S240 from Washington Tractor, in Mt. Vernon, WA. after reading about it on line.The sales experience was awesome! I brought the tractor home and immediately put it to use, and what a night and day difference! The S240 feels very solid, and strong. The seating position feels high, compared to older products, but makes for great visibility. The Deck height adjustment is counter sprung and operates up or down with equal ease. I do lift the deck all the way up when getting on, or off the tractor, which gets the lever out of your way. My lawn is a bit uneven, and I make a three point turn after each straight cut. The deck was scalping badly on the turns, until I adjusted the deck wheels. Now it cuts the lawn as flat as can be. The S240 maneuvers effortlessly, and there is absolutely no play in the steering. The bagging system looks a bit underwhelming compared to the ones for the x series tractors, but it works flawlessly, and will bag even wet grass, with the bagging blades installed. No clogs at all. I had an issue with engine noise, at idle, shortly after I purchased the tractor. I informed the dealer, and after consulting with John Deere, they replaced the engine. I would definitely purchase another John Deere rider, and I would definitely buy again from my local dealer. Items purchased; Bagging system, mulching kit, front blow out baffle, dump trailer.

This would have been my 4th John Deere riding mower. I have a thick lawn with some hills. I purchased this S240 with the mulching kit installed. Great value and features IF you do not want to mulch your lawn. I had to drive so slow for this mower to keep up with the cutting that I would never get my lawn cut. The clippings were very course and many spots had to be cut twice because the grass just laid over. The John Deere I traded in had a freedom 42 deck which cut better than this deck even when the grass was wet. I also could cut at FULL speed if I want or needed too. John Deere is allowing me to trade this S240 in for a X350. I hope this model is as good as my last mower. Very $ though !

Just bought at the beginning of spring (4/16), so have used it about 4-5 times so far. Took a few tries getting use to how the reverse works (push in button, then step on other pedal), and really like it now (was coming from a 20 year old tractor). Love that I can mow in reverse, though if not constant speed in reverse it switches off, but not a big deal. Got the bagger - works well when grass is dry. Definitely cuts down on the time it takes me to cut the grass, or I can go longer between cuts (about 1.5 weeks) for about the same amount of time I was doing with my prior tractor. Biggest issue is refilling the gas tank - since it is under the seat I play it safe by undoing the bagger rather than trying to force in the gas tank and spilling it all over.

Wow, this is the best riding mower I've ever used. Smooth, manuverable, fast, and easy to mow in reverse. My mowing time reduced 40% from my Craftsman mower, cut quality is better, ride is better, and cleanup with the washout hookup is quick and easy. I really think the S240 is far ahead of the average lawn tractor. Better engine, transmissions, upgraded spindles, bearing on the front wheels, even a tie rod bar on the steering. I first considered Cub Cadet, then Husquvarna, and I'm really glad I spent a little more for this John Deere. On sale for $200. too! And the dealer threw in stuff like oil and filter for the first oil change. Thanks John Deere!!!

I have been using a Cub Cadet for years,but decided to really investigate other mowers before buying a new one this year.I settled on the S240 and could not be happier. I love the improved steering ratio. Almost as good as zero turn.the only complaint is the button that has to be held down when mowing in reverse.I also took advantage of the John Deere $200 discount during May.I also liked that this mower had the Kawaksaki 18.5 engine and mower was made in Greenville, Tn..I would highly recommend the 240 to anyone with 2 acres or less to mow.

I upgraded from a D-110 and I am amazed at how well this mower performs. I like the 18.5 V-Twin Kawasaki OHV engine, the upgraded transmission, the PTO, the Steering and the seat and the other features that were borrowed from the X-300 series. This is the perfect mower for a homeowner who wants premium features at a lower price and does not want a Big Box store (100 Series) tractor. From the moment I cranked this mower up and engaged the electric PTO, I knew that I had made the right decision. I purchased mine from a John Deere dealer and with that received the John Deere Promise and what I considered superior service. I was on the fence between the Z-335e and this model. My dealer Lake Norman Tractor located in Cornelius, NC was very considerate and supportive during my trial process and of my final selection. Over the years I have always bought Craftsman riding mowers. Last summer I thought I would upgrade to John Deere. Bad move. I hate this thing. The push button reverse operating system sucks. When cutting my fairly large lawn I spend excessive time reengaging the mower blades. Pushing a button as you go into mowing reverse is not efficient. This is supposed to be a safety feature but I spend more time worrying about the blade rotation stopping than paying attention to my mowing. The height adjustment lever is in the way when getting on and off the machine. The engine is very noisy. I don't know how long the electronic blade engagement system will last but I suspect repaire will be expensive. As many times as I have to re-engauge the blades this system probable won't last long. Going back to Craftsman at a better price.

Just bought my retirement home which came with 2 1/4 acres of grass. Never owned a riding mower, but I knew I wanted a Deere. I read about the S240. Made some phone calls, and the local dealer saved one for me. I got rained out during the first use, and when I returned two weeks later, the lawn was over a foot high. It was a tough job, but the mower handled it. The lawn was a little ragged because of all the grass that was being cut. I cut the lawn again the following week, and it came out perfect. My lawn is fairly rough, and sometimes I wonder if I should have bought a slightly bigger mower. But, I'm happy with the S240.

This tractor does not disappoint. I researched it as much as i could since it is fairly new. Most of the information out there is about the tractor, not actual reviews from people. This tractor is portrayed as the perfect mix between the d and x series and indeed it is. All the upgrades give it the feel of a very expensive tractor, but yet it is reasonably priced. This thing is unbelievebly quite, but yet has so much power. It went through my lawn with absolutely no problems. Keep in mind that i have only used this tractor twice, but so far it feels like the ultimate cutting machine.

Very nice mower compared to my old LT 155 good power it has all the goodies I did notice though that if you are on ruff ground it well start to buck don't think it has shock on the pedal controls like the lt155 forward and reverse are very jerky so if you have bad back be gentle with pedal movements

I upgraded from a D100 that was 7 or 8 years old and had a geared transmission. Luckily the S240 just came out in time for me to buy one. I did a lot of research on all the different brands and the S240 was head and shoulders above the rest. I've mowed 6 times now and LOVE this mower.My mowing time has been reduced by 30 or 40%.The engine is great, the transmission is smooth as can be.All the great things from the 300 that I need. The 300 is just to much tractor for my yard and budget.The difference in price from the D130 at the box stores is only about $500 and well worth it !!! The Kawasaki 18.5hp seems more powerful than the 22hp and much better quality.You can not go wrong with this one !!!!
