Features

Powerful V-twin engine features full-pressure lubrication for dependability and long life

22-hp (16.4-kW) engine (shown on U.S. model) 22-hp (16.4-kW) engine (shown on U.S. model)

A 22-hp (16.4-kW) V-twin engine has plenty of power and torque to handle tough mowing, mulching, and bagging:

  • V-twin cylinder design for greater torque, lower vibration, and improved sound quality
  • Electronic ignition for fast starts
  • Spring-return feature to ensure the operator does not mistakenly leave the throttle lever in the choke position
  • Cast-iron cylinder liners for longer engine life
  • Overhead valves for excellent power and fuel economy
  • Full-pressure lubrication and oil filter for cleaner oil, prolonging engine life and extending the time between oil changes
    • More effective when operating the tractor on an incline

    • The sealed fuel cap helps keep vapors inside the tank.

John Deere Easy Change™ 30-second oil change system

John Deere Easy Change 30-second oil change system John Deere Easy Change 30-second oil change system

The John Deere Easy Change 30-second oil change system makes changing the engine oil easy, quick, and clean. Changing the oil is as easy as twisting on a new oil-filled filter. Oil does not need to be drained from the engine.

The John Deere Easy Change filter is an additional engine oil reservoir. Changing the filter removes the captured contaminants and replaces about 0.8 qt (0.76 L) of engine oil.

The functionality does not stop with ease of use. The Easy Change oil system has several meaningful benefits over the traditional oil filter system of the 100 Series:

  • A synthetic filter material is used for more predictable filtering and longer life.
  • Filtering capacity is greater than with a standard oil filter.
    • More filter surface area
    • More oil flow capacity
  • The system has 40 percent more oil volume.
  • The oil and engine run cooler.
  • The oil filter valve closes whenever the engine stops, so filtered particles are captured and cannot drain back into the engine.
  • The risk of spilling during oil service is greatly reduced.
  • Waste oil (and new oil production) is reduced by over 1,000,000 lb (453,592.4 kg) per tractor production year.
  • This system is not a compromise to just make oil changes easier—these engines pass the same John Deere expectations and rigorous testing as always.

Partly due to these improvements, it is not necessary to remove and dispose of all the oil in the engine during service.

Everyone who uses the John Deere Easy Change system saves time and avoids the mess of a traditional oil change. In the past, many 100 Series Lawn Tractor owners rarely or never got around to changing their engine oil. With  the 30-second oil change, even people who previously would not consider changing the oil themselves can easily do it. The Easy Change system is a no-mess, no-fuss solution the competition cannot match.

Installation instructions are in the Operator’s Manual and in the John Deere Easy Change service part box.

Please recycle. Many local government recycling programs, authorized retailers, auto-service centers, and auto-parts stores will puncture and recycle used oil filters and oil.

Efficient lower chute provides smooth flow of material to reduce chance of plugging. An air-exhaust duct directs air from the hopper back and toward the ground for clean operation. A convenient bungee-cord fastener makes opening and closing the hopper easy. It is easy to install and remove the hopper, and no tools are required after the initial installation. Pins and spring clips hold the hopper and chute in place; there is nothing left to interfere with other attachments when removed. Loose-knit bags allow more air to flow through to provide complete bag filling in wet and heavy grass conditions. Front Blade

46-in. (117-cm) Front Blade The front blade is excellent for pushing light snow or other loose material. The blade is constructed for good performance and long life: Blade surface is curved to roll rather than push material, which requires less power and increased blade capacity. Bolt-on, replaceable cutting edge takes most of the wear to greatly extend the useful life of the blade. For operator convenience, the blade comes with standard equipment for controlling it from the tractor seat: Blade can be angled left, right, or used in the straight-ahead position. Full working range Full working range The 46-in. (117-cm) blade can be operated up to 6.5 in. 8-oz (237-mL) Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer John Deere Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer is a unique formula developed to ensure optimum performance and protection year-round:  Has corrosion preventers For lawn and garden equipment and other gasoline-powered vehicles Ensures quick starts in all two- and four-cycle engines Use in gasoline, gasoline-oil mixture, and ethanol blends Use to treat gas cans at each fill-up or use at every fill-up of vehicle Keeps fuel fresh for 12 months Contains a fuel injector and carburetor cleaner 1 oz (29.6 mL) treats 2 gal. (7.6 L) Always use fuel stabilizer in gasoline.Fuel sitting in gas tanks or gas containers for more than 30 days begins to degrade. Also, blended fuels and water in gasoline can form acids that corrode fuel-system components. Protect the investment - use John Deere fuel stabilizer with corrosion preventers and prevent hard starting, surging, lack of power, poor idle, flooding, and will not run or stay running conditions caused by poor-quality fuel. Ask a local John Deere dealer or visit John Deere Parts. Helpful tips: Add fuel stabilizer every time fuel is purchased. Deere gasoline-powered equipment is recommended to run on a minimum of 87 octane gasoline. John Deere Fuel-Protect for gasoline is safe to use in all types of gasoline, including gasoline/oil mixtures and blended fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol. Use plastic fuel containers to store fuel; ask a local John Deere dealer. For best results, use a spill-proof gas can that automatically seals the gas can vent. Store fuel in a cool, dry, dark place in a sealed fuel can. Fill tank to the top every time the machine is put away. Make sure tank is drained if stored for the winter or treated if left for prolonged periods of time. Please refer to the operator’s manual for additional recommendations and warranty information.Fuel related issues are not considered a warrantable condition as there is no defect in the materials or workmanship of the machine.  For more information on fuel, visit John Deere Groundscare.

Tire Chains

TerraGrip Traction Belt Protect your driving surface. TerraGrip Traction Belts offer enhanced traction on snow, mud, dirt, wet asphalt, and wet concrete surfaces. They will not scratch or chip concrete, asphalt, or aggregate drives or walkways. The proven reliability of the traditional steel chain attachment system is used and combined with the performance and durability of reinforced rubber slats. The rubber slats wrap around the tire so only rubber touches the driving surface. The result is aggressive traction without the risk of surface damage, that can happen with traditional chains. Features: Rubber slats surround the tire and will not damage driveways or sidewalks. No steel touches the driving surface. No-tools installation utilizes a traditional steel chain attachment system. Traction is improved on all surfaces, especially loose material (snow, dirt, mud, sand, etc.). TerraGrip Traction Belts are approved for John Deere 100, 200, X300, X500 M-T, and X700 Series Tractors. Additional information for 4-wheel-steer tractor models: X700 Series – requires wheel spacer sold separately X500 Series – requires wheel stop adjustment X300 Series – no additional requirements

Weights

34-lb (15.4-kg) front wheel weight A durable cast-iron weight can be mounted to each front wheel. These weights are recommended for use when operating on slopes, especially when the tractor is equipped with a rear grass bagger or other rear-mounted equipment. Each weight requires BM17978 mounting hardware.

Rear weight bracket (BG20022 shown) Rear weight bracket shown with two 42-lb (19.1-kg) weights The rear weight bracket provides a tractor-mounted bracket for hanging two weights: BG20627 replaces BG20022 and BG20499 rear weight brackets. Clearance is provided for the carbon canister that is required on tractors sold in California. BG20627 can be used in all applications where BG20022 and BG20499 were used.
30-lb (13.6-kg) front wheel-weight shown Hardware is required for installing each front-wheel weight. Requirements: Mounting may require drilling two holes in the wheel rim. BM17978 mounting hardware kit is required for each weight. NOTE: Front-wheel weights are not available for special edition tractors because the styled front-wheel design does not have appropriate holes for mounting the wheel weights and no adapter is available.

Quick learning and results

4/5

Purchased my 130 in July. I quickly learned how to operate the machine. I have the bag collector for clippings and leaves. Within a few minutes I was able to maneuver quickly and cut at least an hour off my mow time. Very pleased with the results.

Leaves a Lot to be Desired

2/5

I loved my 22-year old Sears XLT-1000. Unfortunately it threw a rod and I needed to buy a new tractor/mower. I find the two foot pedals used to control forward and reverse motion annoying and non-intuitive to operate. Name one single car that uses such a convoluted control system? Compared to my old tractor, the new one seems top heavy. I am much more aware and concerned with mowing on non-level ground than with the Sears XLT-1000. And the situation gets worse as the high-mounter bagger accessory begins to fill up. I fear the thing is going to flip over sideways, and that’s not a confidence building feeling! I had the dealership replace the goofy oil filter system that comes standard on this model for a conventional oil filter and drain system so I change ALL the oil, not just a small percentage of it. And the cheap plastic hood and plastic hood-hinge are nothing to write home about either. I really regret not shopping more carefully before buying.

Cadillac of Lawn Tractors

5/5

The John Deere S-130 was a gift from my family for father's day. I can't say enough about how this machine preforms and the ease to operate it. I use the lawn tractor most every day pulling my wagon around the property doing various chores. I firmly believe that my John Deere is the Cadillac of lawn tractors.

New, fast, and better than the old one.

4/5

Lots of changes from the 12-year-old Snapper that I traded in. This machine is fun to drive and works reasonably well. It is a learning experience for me but a good one. While it is fast and cuts well, the vacuum pickup needs to be babied to do it's job.

Great machine!

4/5

Have always wanted a John Deere. Runs great, much quieter than others I've had. Concerned about the so-called safety button for reverse cutting. It's more of a safety hazard when I have to use one hand to push the button. Fixed it with a 3 inch piece of copper wire. Also bought the oil conversion kit to cut the cost of an oil change (and change 100% of the oil). It now gets 5 stars.

S130 exceeds expectations

4/5

I have used this lawnmower three times, the fourth will be later today and. its is a pleasure to operate. Two things that bother me are the reverse push button that you have to hold down to cut in reverse. It is cumbersome to look over your shoulder backing up while holding the button down. I know it is a safety feature but I'm not thrilled by it. The other is the mulching kit. I have been told to cut my grass at 3" to promote it's health especially in thee dry season. I find that the mulching suffers a bit at 3" but far exceeds our Cub Cadet XT-1 which was horrible at mulching anything. Overall, I find the S130 a well designed and quality machine I would recommend to anyone needing a riding lawnmower.

Surpringly Maneuverable

5/5

This small tractor is a wonder-winner! Surprisingly powerful and maneuverable, it cuts 98% of my irregularly shaped lawn. The only drawbacks are that it is rather loud and uses a good amount of fossil fuel. All in all, a potent helper in yard work!

Expected more information

3/5

WOW! first, I must question the validity of any review that first offers examples of what is expected. Beyond that, any review would be of more value to John Deere if offered after a year's use. When New --- they are all in good working order no matter whether John Deere or any other make. The model 130 I purchased has the quick oil change feature - from what I can tell in the owner's manual, the feature will leave a significant quantity of old oil in the engine. 2.8 quart capacity but old oil removal is limited to filter capacity. A side drain on the crank case would offer easy access and better service. The manual leaves numerous blank spots. Spark Plug gap is posted but not spark plug part number. Numerous part numbers are missing. I know John Deere parts are suggested and will likely be purchased but knowing the numbers will save time on my run to the dealer. and so on and so on . 3 stars out of 5 does not indicate disappointment but it is "average for all new products". Advancement to 5 star rating requires satisfaction after a year or more of use.

Very smooth cutting mower

5/5

I bought this 5 weeks ago and have 6 hours on the meter. The mower is working great. I mowed 2 acres with it which I had not mowed since last September so grass and weeds were quite tall. The mower never bogged down st all. So far no problems at all.

S130 UPGRADE

5/5

Got the S130 to replace a 22 yo L110 and love it. Steering is much improved and really appreciate the 2 pedal over the older trans shifter. Along with the electric PTO. Will be getting the oil change mod for the first oil change at 50 hours as I am somewhat surprised JD went with the quick change filter system.

Cuts nice but burns spots in yard.

3/5

Bought 2 months ago. Cuts nice but has a a problem with this mower leaving burned marks from the exhaust in yard any where you stop for a very short time. Are there any modifications that can be done to this mower or exhaust pipe to prevent this from happening . Older model John deers did not have this problem . What has changed? This needs to be corrected some how. Not. Happy with this . Can’t even stop to move a table without burning spots in the yard.

John Deere and poor customer service and managemen

2/5

After only 49 hours of running time the gas guage and hour guage went bad and the John Deere customer service was awful. I emailed the CEO of John Deere and he doesn't even reply. What is up with John Deere and their inability to assist customers with situitations of their own making by providing inferior products. I am not happy with John Deere at this time.

My Deere s a Dud

2/5

I purchased the s130 a little over a month ago from a John Deere dealership and now Lowe's is offering the s140 for $200 less than what I paid. I was told by the dealership that I was getting a discount on this model because it was one he had in stock and wouldn't have to order the s120 that I inquired about but that has proven to be false. I've had continued trouble with the front tire not holding air. I took the tire to the dealership but the issue has not been resolved.

This is my first purchase of a John Deere riding lawnmower and am very pleased with the performance of my S130 mower! I opted to purchase my mower from a JD dealer and the sales rep was very helpful in my decision to choose the model and mulching kit. The combination of both the mower and the kit has done an amazing job on my lawn. The lawn is green, healthy and the height of the grass is cut evenly. I have received a number of compliments from my neighbors and friends!

S130 Does What I Was Hoping For

5/5

Bought my 2023 John Deere S130 from TriGreen Equipment in Pelham, AL back in October 2023, so I've had it 7 months so far. I also had TriGreen install a mulching kit. I've been very impressed so far and the tractor has lived up to my expectations. It did a great job mulching oak leaves from fall through the winter months. Now I've had the chance to actually mow grass with it and I'm very impressed with the cut and evenness.

Horrible dealer experience

3/5

I bought the tractor from my local dealer because I wanted a relationship with the dealer instead of the local home improvement store. I could have saved money but decided to go to the dealership. That was a mistake, I was promised that the machine would be washed, fueled and looked over. What I got was the machine as I sat on the lot outside, there were 3 tags zip tied to the steering wheel, no fuel in the tank and it was filthy. The machine itself is great but the dealer experience was horrible and after speaking with the GM after I had to email the president of the company she just made excuse after excuse.

John Deere S130 is a Beast!

5/5

I bought my John Deere S130 a month a ago and really enjoy it. I has a Craftsman for 16 years and served me well. This tractor is a beast. With 22 HP i handles my 1.5 acres with ease. I love all the features this model has, especially the mowing in reverse. With the quick change oil feature you change the oil and filter in under a minute. The tight turning radius makes mowing around trees a snap. The bagger attachment really packs the grass in the two bags. I would highly recommend this mower.

It’s a deere

3/5

This new series John Deere seems much cheaper made then my 2006. I hope it lasts as long but I don’t believe it will. The side clips on the hood had to be glued so they didn’t come off and get lost. In the front under the hood just behind the bumper, is plastic. You have to be extremely careful opening and closing the hood so you don’t break it. Overall look is nice, so far it cuts well, but I’ve only used it twice. I do like the ride and the hose connection on the deck for cleaning is a nice addition. In closing, time will tell. It’s a Deere so I hope it lasts like my last one.

It’s a Deere

3/5

So far it’s doing the job. Problems are the rubber stoppers on the sides of the hood had to be glued so they didn’t get lost. When you open the hood you have to be extremely careful, because the front lower section on the tractor is plastic and it catches. If not careful it will break. My LA115 had a mark on the setting for recommended cut hight, this one doesn’t. Over all this S130 is no where near the quality of my LA115, I’m sure the S130 won’t last 18 years like my LA115. Don’t get me wrong it’s a Deere so time will tell. I’ve never used any other machine but Deere, so when I needed a new machine, that’s what I went with. I’ve only used the S130 twice and it cuts fine, so I guess I’d recommend it but be aware of the issue I’ve described.

Great mower!

50 Hrs. so far on my S130. Zero issues so far. The quick change filter I actually like. What I did was to keep the filter but add the oil drain pipe. This allows me to get all the old oil drained. I kept the quick change filter because it gives me a larger filter media and easy no mess filter change. Yes, the filter is expensive compared to a small spin on, but for a once a year oil change it's no big concern to me. I also did the "Poor mans" power steering upgrade. There are several Youtube videos on how to do this upgrade. I also converted the front spindle bushing over to roller bearings. JD has all the necessary parts to do both these conversions. All necessary maintenance is very easy. I like the under seat fuel tank as well. I maintain 7 yards a week, all at or just over 1/2 acre each. I do them all in one day. The mower runs cool even here in the Florida summer heat. Never a problem. I am very satisfied so far with the mower.

Charlene is the best tractor ever made

5/5

Hey people. After I had to deal with the struggle of owning an orange Swedish mower that starts with the letter H, I bought an S130 2 months ago that i named “Charlene” after joe diffie’s song john deere green. I will list some pros and cons of this model. PROS 22 Horses under the hood which delivers a good cut. The gas tank under the seat feels easier and is safer in my opinion because when i filled my old mower up with gas, i had to open up the hood and when the engine was hot, it would feel just like an oven when i opened it and that’s a no no. And also if something like a spark gets loose and hits the gas tank in the engine bay, well game over. Cruise Control: I have a 3 acre lawn. So cruise control helps me lay back and not put my foot to sleep. Mows a 3 acre lawn perfectly: Now this model has a 42” deck. Why didn’t i get a 48” or 54” Deck for it? I love mowing and getting sunburnt. Electric PTO: All it is is you pull some knob and the mower deck turns on. I always hated whenever i had to take the mower deck off of the old mower cuz i hate rerouting cables. Fuel Gauge: I love seeing my mower low on fuel and drive to the gas station to fill up my gas cans to fill up my mower. CONS: Easy Change Oil System: I get that people like to do things the easy way, but this filter is horrible for your engine and it costs 50 bucks. Idk about you, but i am not the guy who spends 50 bucks for some oil filter. Don’t worry you can easily convert it back to the traditional oil filter. Reverse Mowing Button: I don’t like pushing that button every time i mow in reverse. I know that it’s a safety feature, but other brands have it easier where it is a key position to mow in reverse and you don’t have to push a button every time. I fixed this by connecting the two wires on the wiring harness. If you do that, make sure you put a danger sticker on the back. So my verdict is BUY IT. k bye

Charlene is the best tractor ever made.

5/5

Hey people. After I went through the struggle of owning an orange Swedish lawnmower that starts with an H and has solenoid issues, valve issues, and governor issues. I said, "Screw it" and I bought this John Deere S130 a couple months ago. I named my new tractor Charlene after that girl that Billy bob likes in Joe Diffie's song called John Deere Green. I will list all the pros and cons. Ready? Here we go. PROS: 22 Horses under the hood gives me a good cut. Gas tank is at back: The gas tank does not go under the hood. I always hated filling up my old tractor because every time I opened the hood, it would feel like an oven and that's a no no. Also, if some spark or something happens under the hood and the gas tank is there, well game over. Parts are easy to get and repair: shop.deere.com is just like amazon. You add it to your cart, and you check out. But unlike amazon, these are good quality OEM parts. Cruise Control: I don't have to worry about keeping my foot on the gas. All I have to do is push the gas down and lock in cruise control. And now I can mow a 3-acre yard without worrying about nothing. It can tow accessories very well: I built a trailer out of a piece of plywood and a lawn chair and it tows it very well. CONS Easy Change Oil System: Ok, I get that it's easy to change the oil with this, but it only replaces a fraction of your engine oil. I wanna make sure my tractor lasts. So, I took it off and replaced it with the traditional oil filter system. Reverse mowing button: I am not a fan of the reverse mowing system. I get that it's a safety system, but it should be like other mower's reverse mowing toggle. So that is my review on the John Deere S130. My verdict is BUY IT. k bye

Does not stand for quality

1/5

I bought this riding mower just over 2 years ago I put 10hrs on it in those 2 years and the first time I had to cut the grass this season the electronic hours and fuel gauge went blank so you can't see how much gas is left until you run out or the hours, I called customer service they said my 2 year warranty was up and to bad so sad can't do anything for you, with that kind of attitude toward the customer I will now sell my tractor and buy another brand and unfortunately they lost a loyal customer over a $76 part.

Overall happy

5/5

I had a smaller Deere lawn tractor for the past 20 years and loved it. This tractor is bigger and more powerful. It is also quieter which is nice. I need some time to adapt to the changes. I’m 6’6” with relatively large feet. I do find it a challenge to push only one of the directional pedals as my foot often hits the F and R pedals at the same time.

Fits my needs.

5/5

Bought this lawn tractor at local John Deere Dealer. It mows my 6 acres beautifully and pulls small yard trailer for incidental stuff. Plenty of power. Preventative Maintenance is so simple a caveman could do it. Only minor issue is gas tank fill is easily accessible but it is not the best location for peeps with big hands.

Mower Deck spindles are not reliable

2/5

Bought this in 2022 at Home Depot, in 2023 sent into a local JD dealership to do maintenance and they discovered the mower deck spindles bearings were bad, so replaced two of them. In 2024 as of today 8MAR, have sent it in for the yearly maintenance plan getting ready for spring/summer, again two spindles have bad bearings. Now they stated it was because of bad maintenance, BUT my lawnmower only has 23 total hours on it, 11 hours being from the first year of owning it. Other than these spindles being junk the mower itself works good, battery is still strong, engine purrs as much as a lawnmower engine can. I am really perturbed that this dealership stated the spindles are bad because of lack of maintenance. This will be the last time I go to that location for any work. As for the spindles that keep going bad, I can only suggest that JD go to another sub-vendor and get better quality parts.

Didn’t last a season - disappointing cust. support

1/5

Purchased through Lowe’s. I’ve submitted two reviews with Lowe’s that haven’t been posted. This machine worked well until one day it caught fire mulching leaves that I previously handled with a walk-behind, battery-powered mower. I got about 5 mins of mowing done that day before it started burning, and with all the plastic on these - they burn fast. This was a total loss. I think the low front exhaust is a poor design and inherently dangerous. The customer service rep I first called told me that he alone had taken in five reports of fires that week. I’m concerned that this risk isn’t available to purchasers because not all reviews are being posted. Please be careful. John Deere has not returned multiple messages since the fire. Really disappointing that this machine lasted less than one season. I spent more time convincing my wife to let me spend $$$ than the amount of time I spent using the machine. “Nothing burns like a Deere”

Oil leaking

2/5

The mower was great at first but the dealership was lacking. The tractor was supposed to come with a front bumper and when I asked about it I was pushed off multiple times by multiple workers. Then within 2 months I discovered an oil leak it has been taken back to the dealership and I have been waiting for a few weeks.

There are two items that need to be addressed. One is the item that you put the blades in gear. it is very hard to pull it up. The second item is when I have to push the motor, it is very difficult to push it down. Maybe a little bit of oil could correct it.

Year round use of S130

5/5

I bought this first for lawn mowing (we have ~1 acre), and it's done that very well. This is Alaska, which means our snow season as long as our growing season, so I also added a snowblower to make use of the tractor in the winter. It handles the snowblowing very well too, so I get year-round use out of the machine. It has plenty of power for my needs, which is why I bought the two cylinder motor.

Absolutely love it! So far so good!! I have some hilly terrain on all sides of my house and .59 acres and it’s great getting up and down it. I’ve cut my grass about 5 times with it so far. My only “complaint” because it’s not really a complaint but I wish the dealer would’ve went over some tips and stuff for things like storing it for the Winter (not sure if that’s in the manual at all)

Great Mower

I previously had a D110 for about 13 years. Loved it. Bought the S-130 which seems to have alot more power & better cutting ability. love the steering & controls on this Mower. Much easier to operate, and very responsive. Only 1 very small difference is the seat. The one on the D-130 is not as comfortable, but a small con.

Ok but quality lacking for lower end S model

2/5

I bought this for my country house on 2 acres and found the size to be perfect. But the quality was lacking. The brake lock broke and the engine emits white smoke. The bagger attachment has the grass often clog in the chute and the engine itself is noisy compared to my neighbor’s cub cadet. The tires had poor tread for my yard (slightly sloppy) and I had to replace them for more grippy tires. The yard cart had a bent tow bar. Because of the distance from my house, there is no on site service available for me and I have not been able to take it in for service in my truck because I am not able to easily load it into the bed (I don’t have a trainer).

Quality machine

The durable v-twin engine starts immediately and runs great. I did replace the Easy Start system with the traditional oil filter. The S130 cuts grass evenly while mulching and blowing leaves where I want them. The turning radius is tight and steering is effortless compared to my older Craftsman. Rider comfort is good with the high-back adjustable seat.

I am very happy with the S130 lawn tractor. I would recommend that new owners read the manual from front to back before using the S130. That said, I enjoy working with it so much that I spend more time than I should on the tractor. Thanks for designing and building a great machine.
