Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:

  • Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
    • Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
  • Clean flow of material out of discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
  • Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal recutting, and an even distribution of clippings.
  • Exact Adjust deck-leveling system allows for easy and accurate leveling of the mower deck.
Productivity - getting the job done fast
Right side of Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck Right side of Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck

Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of recutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:

  • Greatly improves mower's capacity to maintain excellent mowing performance in difficult mowing conditions and at higher speeds

Large discharge opening is both high and wide to handle more material:

  • Gives a smooth, even discharge of clippings at all mowing speeds
  • Reduces the chance of plugging, especially important when operating in wet, thick, or dense grass and when bagging
  • The 48A Power Flow blower has an inlet housing with over 50 percent greater area than the 48X Power Flow blower used on previous machines.
Cleanliness - for the mower and the operator
Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck
Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck

The flat-top shape of the deck stamping is optimal for keeping itself and the operator clean:

  • There are few places to catch and hold material on top and underneath the deck.
    • Top of deck stays cleaner, reducing time and effort needed for cleaning and service
    • Underside of deck is self-cleaning to maintain optimum performance without buildup of material to interfere with the flow of air and clippings
    • Less need to clean and remove buildup of material from underside deck
  • The depth of the Accel Deep mower deck minimizes the amount of material that escapes from the front of the deck:
    • Limited amount of material to drift onto the operator and mower deck
    • Even for material discharged out the chute, less recutting results in larger pieces that are less likely to end up on the operator
    • Mulching prevents the discharge of material completely and MulchControl makes mulching a practical solution for most mowing situations.

Cleaning a mower deck, both top and bottom, is one of the most frequent maintenance activities:

  • The flat-top design reduces places for material to build up and makes material that does collect easy to remove.

Easy-to-adjust mower wheel and mower side reinforcement Easy-to-adjust mower wheel and mower side reinforcement

The 48A Mower Deck has strong spindle pockets, to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough service:

  • Stamped from strong 10-gauge, 0.135-in. (3.4-mm) steel
  • Ribs in the deck shell add strength where it is needed
  • The 48A has a 23 percent heavier overall weight than the Edge™ Xtra 48-in. (122-cm) Mower Deck used on previous machines.

Mower wheels are heavy duty:

  • Provides greater strength and durability for longer, trouble-free life.
  • Setting wheels to the correct height for the cutting height quick and easy.

Low-tension belt-drive design reduces the side load on engine lower bearings and mower deck bearings for longer life.

The 48A Mower Deck features a 5/8-in. (16-mm) diameter solid-steel rod side bumper that provides extra strength and protection.

Dual-stage E-coat and powder-paint coatings provide extra protection from rust.

Versatility - easy to change between side discharge, mulch, and bagging modes

The 48A Mower Deck is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another:

  • With an optional MulchControl system installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side discharging to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever or push of an electric switch.
  • The Power Flow rear bagger can be used with MulchControl by simply using the MulchControl lever or electric one-touch switch to move the mulch baffle to the side-discharge position.

Four-wheel power steering gives superior maneuverability and trimming ability

Four-wheel steering versus two-wheel steering Four-wheel steering versus two-wheel steering
Four-wheel steer maneuverability Four-wheel steer maneuverability

NOTE: In the schematic above, the solid line refers to a four-wheel steer tractor, and the hashed line refers to a two-wheel steer tractor.

Four-wheel steering provides very significant maneuverability and trimming advantages over that of two-wheel-steering-equipped tractors.

For example, with the X394 Select Series™ Tractor equipped with a 48-in. (122-cm) Accel Deep™ Mower (the following numbers correspond to the schematic above):

  1. Uncut circle radius is reduced from 24 in. (61 cm) for a two-wheel steer X390 to only 15 in. (38 cm) with an X394, eliminating or greatly reducing the need to back up when trimming around trees, shrubs, etc.
  2. Interference from the mower and tractor wheels is eliminated because they are several inches away from the object being trimmed around.
  3. Outside turning circle is reduced, reducing the time spent turning and increasing mowing efficiency.

Also, trimming inside curves around flower beds or other landscaping can be done more completely with a four-wheel steer tractor.

Designed for tight turns

The four-wheel steering system is designed for tight turns, leading to greater mowing efficiency:

  • Caster, camber, and kingpin angles are optimized to reduce effort, especially when going from straight ahead into a turn.
  • Steering geometry has been designed with the use of 3D modeling, so all four tires are working together.
  • Sealed ball bearings are used on the torque shaft and the rear spindles to reduce friction.
  • Small scrub radius, less than 1 in. (2.5 cm) in the rear, reduces scuffing and bump-steer.
Designed for easy steering

Four-wheel manual steer illustration shown Four-wheel manual steer illustration shown

Sealed ball bearings are used at critical all-wheel-steer joints for reduced friction, longer life, and less maintenance.

Easy steering is important for an enjoyable mowing experience:

  • Larger, 14-in. (35.6-cm) diameter steering wheel gives improved leverage for easier turns.
  • Ball-joints on both ends of the steering tie rods reduce wear to maintain accurate steering.
  • Greaseable front steering spindles reduce friction and improve wear over time.
Power steering enables easy turns
Power steering cylinder Power steering cylinder

Hydraulic power steering is standard equipment:

  • Provides effortless, automotive-like control
  • Reduces operator fatigue and increases productivity
  • Enables a tight turning radius for great maneuverability
  • Adjustable-tilt steering wheel for optimum operator comfort (X390 and X394 Tractor)

MulchControl™ system provides superior mulching performance and rapid conversion

Lever-action MulchControl lever (shown on 48A mower deck) Lever-action MulchControl lever (shown on 48A mower deck)
Electric one-touch MulchControl switch Electric one-touch MulchControl switch

The optional MulchControl system makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • Creates a beautiful looking lawn
  • Smaller grass clippings disappear into the lawn canopy
  • Reduces fertilizer needs
  • Grass clippings are not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • No need to dispose of bags of clippings
How MulchControl works
MulchControl baffle open (shown on 48A mower deck) MulchControl baffle open (shown on 48A mower deck)
MulchControl baffle closed (shown on 48A mower deck) MulchControl baffle closed (shown on 48A mower deck)

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl system includes an adjustable MulchControl baffle near the discharge chute and fixed baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
  • The MulchControl handle, or an electric one-touch actuator, is on top of the mower deck and is used to open and close the MulchControl baffle.
  • When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material flows freely out the discharge deflector or into a material collection system.
  • When the MulchControl baffle is closed, material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

  • For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • For operators who usually side discharge, but would like to close the chute to control clippings in some areas
  • For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • For operators who collect clippings but want to go farther before emptying the material collection system

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings.

Electric one-touch MulchControl

Electric one-touch MulchControl systems shift the MulchControl baffle using an electric actuator that is operated by a dash-mounted switch.

Electric one-touch MulchControl switcht Electric one-touch MulchControl switcht
Electric one-touch MulchControl actuator (shown on 42A mower deck) Electric one-touch MulchControl actuator (shown on 42A mower deck)

Operators can convert between modes without interrupting the mowing process, making it possible to change between modes:

  • When approaching driveways or flower beds where clippings would be undesirable
  • When a breeze blows clippings back onto the operator
  • For side discharge mowing only the areas of the property where grass is too thick for mulching
  • With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, for collecting only the areas of the property where grass is too tall or thick for mulching
MulchControl limitations

While in the side discharge mode, MulchControl still mulches about one third of the material. Therefore, the side discharge mode is essentially a partial mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired
  • 42A Mower Deck requires a MulchControl baffle be removed to install the bagger chute

When bagging with MulchControl on a 48A or 54A mower deck, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower runs without material when the baffle is closed.

Rear baffle (A) must be removed for bagging with MulchControl with 42A mower decks Rear baffle (A) must be removed for bagging with MulchControl with 42A mower decks

When bagging with MulchControl on a 42A mower deck, the cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl blades. However, the rear MulchControl baffle (A) needs to be removed to install the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.

MulchControl compatibility

Each MulchControl system is an optional field-installed attachment and includes everything needed: baffles, mulch blades, a handle (lever action attachments) or an actuator, wiring, and switches (electric one-touch attachments).

Smooth, rounded contours present a modern, styled appearance:

  • Hood styling incorporates efficient full-length air-intake louvers on each side, rather than on the top.
    • Cooler engine operation
    • Lower operator station sound levels
  • Hot air is vented out the front grille, away from the operator.
  • The fully enclosed hood is made of molded-in-color material.
    • Reduces sound
    • Will not rust or dent
  • Distinctive grille and large, one-piece fender deck complete the styling package.

Comfortable cut-and-sewn seat with optional armrests Comfortable cut-and-sewn seat with optional armrests

An 18-in. (46-cm), high-back cut-and-sewn seat delivers a comfortable, smooth ride and excellent support for the operator:

  • A smoother, more comfortable ride results from the use of more foam than in a form-in-place seat and more side-bolstering to stabilize the operator on uneven terrain.
  • Improved visual appeal is provided by the thicker cushion, additional bolstering in the seat and back, and an embroidered John Deere logo that makes this upscale seat look as good as it feels.
  • Long-term pliability and less chance of cracking are advantages of the cut-and-sewn process, which does not require heating during the manufacturing process and gives a more uniform vinyl thickness.
  • Additional operator support and comfort is available with optional BM23761 armrests.
  • Reduced cost of repair, should the seat cover be damaged, is available with a replaceable seat cover available from Parts.
  • Seat travel of 6.6 in. (17 cm) with 15 positions allows the operator to be seated comfortably and easily operate the controls. Seat can be easily adjusted fore and aft by the operator while sitting on the seat.
Adjustable seat suspension
Seat suspension with springs in rear position Seat suspension with springs in rear position
Seat suspension with springs in forward position Seat suspension with springs in forward position

The seat suspension is adjustable, without tools, for the weight of the operator:

  • Springs are adjustable fore and aft to any of three positions.
    • No tools required
    • Allows fine-tuning of the suspension for the operator's weight
    • Back position for more support for heavier operators
  • Tool tray is designed into the seat base.

John Deere riding lawn mowers are supported by owner information web pages that include links to:

  • Safety and how-to videos
  • Operator’s manuals
  • Parts catalog
  • Maintenance reminder sheets
  • Attachments
  • Warranty statements

To speed access to owner information web pages, a QR code is printed onto a PIN label located under the hood on trim side of the steering pedestal. Since each vehicle model has its own web page, the links are specific to the owner’s model. The QR code also includes the vehicle’s unique PIN which allows for additional customization of the owner information web page in the future.

Exact Adjust ports and onboard deck-leveling tools make precise deck adjustments easy
Deck-leveling gauge and hex adjusting tool stored under tractor seat Deck-leveling gauge and hex adjusting tool stored under tractor seat
Exact Adjust access holes Exact Adjust access holes

A mower deck must be level side-to-side and properly adjusted front-to-rear to give the best cutting performance. A removable onboard deck-leveling gauge and a hex-key tool are provided to make adjustment easy. They are securely stored under the tractor seat.

Exact Adjust leveling ports are provided on each side of the operator platform above the mower-level adjusting bolts. With the hex-shaped tool, they provide convenient access to allow quick and easy adjustment of the mower for the best-cut quality of cut.

The Exact Adjust feature is standard on all Select Series™ X300 and X500 Tractors:

  • There is no need to reach under the fender deck while making the mower-level adjustment.
  • Onboard deck-leveling gauge, Exact Adjust ports, and the hex tool work together.
    • Level the mower deck side to side
    • Set the correct amount of rake (front-to-back deck orientation)
    • Calibrate the cutting height to the cut-height adjusting knob setting
  • Exact Adjust simplifies leveling the mower deck if equipped with a Power Flow™ blower.
    • To give the best cut, mower level should be adjusted if alternately mowing with and without blower installed. The Exact Adjust feature makes this easy.

Using included ball-hex tool to level mower deck Using included ball-hex tool to level mower deck

Consult the operator's manual for the correct adjusting procedures for each tractor model. Basic adjusting steps to properly level the mower deck include:

  • Park the tractor on a level surface.
  • Inflate tires to the correct pressure.
  • Consult the label for the cutting-height knob that is located on the console of the machine. This label shows deck-leveling position and location of deck-leveling adjustment points.
Cut height adjusting knob Cut height adjusting knob
  • Set mower cutting-height knob to the correct deck-leveling position.
  • Adjust mower wheels as necessary so they do not contact the ground surface.
  • Remove the onboard deck-leveling gauge that is located under the seat.
  • Using the Exact Adjust ports and tool, adjust mower deck side-to-side level so the deck-leveling gauge just slips under the left and right lower deck rim at the designated adjustment points. The location of adjustment points varies slightly between decks.
    • Left- and right-rear adjustment points are under the deck rim near the rear mower wheels, if equipped.
  • Adjust mower deck front-to-back level, if necessary.
    • Loosen rear nuts equally on each side of front lift rod.
    • Turn front nut equally on each side clockwise to raise front of mower or counterclockwise to lower it until gauge just slips under the front adjustment point.
    • Tighten rear nuts after adjustment is complete.
  • Return the gauge to its storage position.

NOTE: The adjusting tool supplied with the tractor is an 8-mm ball-hex key, part number M162737. The rounded end allows for some misalignment with the bolt as the deck is adjusted.

Every owner of a John riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials including firewood, lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

NOTE: For proper braking and operation, the loaded weight of the cart should never exceed the weight of the tractor, or other towing unit, plus the operator. The loaded weight of any equipment towed by an EZtrak™ or ZTrak™ mower should not exceed 250 lb (113.4 kg). See the appropriate vehicle pages for the weight of the vehicle and the mower deck.

7P Poly Utility Cart7P Poly Utility Cart
  • The cart has a premium molded, high-density polyethylene box construction.
  • Compression molding process allows polyethylene to be the optimum thickness in all areas for superior strength and durability.
  • Polyethylene body will not rust or dent; it stays looking new longer.
  • 0.75-in. (2-cm) x 2-in. (5-cm) stake pockets are molded in to make the addition of side extensions easy.
  • Two vertical 0.75-in. (2-cm) molded channels on each side allow easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
  • Ribs in the box bottom add strength and prevent the shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
  • Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; there is no tailgate to loosen or remove.
  • Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment.
  • Pneumatic tires provide turf tread for good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance.

13 Steel Utility Cart 13 Steel Utility Cart

Every owner of a John Deere riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials, including firewood, lawn debris, dirt, sand, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

For proper braking and operation, the loaded weight of the cart should never exceed the weight of the tractor, or other towing unit, plus the operator. See the appropriate vehicle pages for the weight of the vehicle and the mower deck.

Welded boxWelded box

Welded box construction provides maximum reliability:

  • Requires less setup time than the bolted construction.
  • Box sides and bottom are one piece and have rounded corners and no hardware for easy cleaning.
Wheels and tires

Wheels are mounted on a solid, one-piece axle for durability.

Iron/Oilite® wheel bearings with grease fittings provide lubrication for long life.

Pneumatic tires offer:

  • Good flotation
  • Minimal rolling resistance
  • Shock absorption

Turf-tread tires are used on the 13 Utility Cart.

Deluxe tailgateDeluxe tailgate

Deluxe tailgate is hinged for easy emptying and can also be quickly removed without the use of tools.

Easy hookup and tilt-dump latch
Spring-pin tractor hitchSpring-pin tractor hitch
Tilt-dump latchTilt-dump latch

A large-diameter hitch pin provides plenty of strength:

  • Fast, easy attachment to the tractor hitch
  • Spring pin to ensure the pin stays in place

The easy-to-use latch allows tilting the bed for easier unloading:

  • Steep dump angle makes emptying easier.

The 17-cu-ft (0.48-m³), 800-lb (363-kg) capacity or 350 lb (158 kg) when using swivel feature to dump 16YS Swivel Cart is unique in the lineup of John Deere carts in that it can be swiveled 120 degrees to either side for easier unloading. The operator can simply pull up next to where they want to dump the material and swivel the cart, eliminating the need to back up the cart.

Key features include:

  • Haul a variety of materials including lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, and plants
  • 800-lb (363-kg) capacity makes it durable enough for the heavy jobs
    • 350 lb (158 kg) when using swivel feature to dump
  • Convenient foot pedal release for easy dumping
  • Molded stake pockets for enlarging the bed size

NOTE: Do not exceed 350 lb (158 kg) weight capacity when using swivel feature to dump.

Every owner of a John Deere riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart.

See the appropriate vehicle pages for the weight of the vehicle and the mower deck.

17P Utility Cart17P Utility Cart

Every owner of a John Deere riding lawn and garden product is a potential user of a high-quality, affordable utility cart.

Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials:

  • Firewood
  • Lawn debris
  • Sand
  • Dirt
  • Mulch
  • Garden tools
  • Plants and bushes

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

Key features of the 17P Utility Cart:

  • 1,000-lb (454-kg), 17-cu ft (0.48-m3) load capacity.
  • Cart has premium molded polypropylene box construction.
  • Polypropylene body will not rust or dent, staying new-looking longer.
  • 0.75- x 2-in. (19- x 51-mm) stake pockets are molded in to make addition of side extensions easy.
  • Two vertical 0.75-in. (19-mm) molded channels on each side allow for easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
  • Ribs in box bottom add strength and prevent a shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
  • Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; no tailgate to loosen or remove.
  • Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment.
  • 16x6.5 pneumatic tires with turf tread give good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance.
  • Wheels are mounted on a solid one-piece axle.
  • Wheels turn on iron/Oilite® bushings with grease fitting for long life.
  • Spring-loaded dump latch is easy to use.

A convenient foot pedal dump release kit, LP48017, which now comes standard on all 10P and 17P carts is available to retrofit existing poly carts. This kit allows the operator to use both hands to lift the cart bed for more natural and efficient unloading.

The 40-in. (102-cm) Tractor Shovel expands the usefulness of any John Deere Select SeriesTM X300 or X500 Multi-Terrain Tractor by allowing it to pick up and move material. It utilizes a high-capacity electric actuator that provides lift, lower, dump, and down force functions. No front blade is required.

The tractor shovel takes the back-breaking labor out of jobs like moving mulch, spreading gravel, ground grading, and more. It installs using the tractor's existing frame holes. After initial installation, it can be removed or installed without tools.

The innovative opening design of the tractor shovel, combined with the lift height, assures complete emptying of material. The tractor shovel can also be used for scraping and grading by locking the shovel in the raised position.

Tractor recommendations and requirements:

  • Rear tractor ballast recommended for improved traction
  • Tire chains recommended for moving snow
  • No tractor requirements

 Key features:

  • Can be used when upper part of shovel is locked in the raised position as a blade (without angling capability)
  • Raised and lowered with electric actuator
  • Provides down force to increase scraping effectiveness of blade
  • Pick-up, transport, and empty a variety of loose material including soil, gravel, mulch, and snow
  • Can be removed in 10 minutes or less

8-oz (237-mL) Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer8-oz (237-mL) Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer

John Deere Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer is a unique formula developed to ensure optimum performance and protection year-round:

  • Has corrosion preventers
  • For lawn and garden equipment and other gasoline-powered vehicles
  • Ensures quick starts in all two- and four-cycle engines
  • Use in gasoline, gasoline-oil mixture, and ethanol blends
  • Use to treat gas cans at each fill-up or use at every fill-up of vehicle
  • Keeps fuel fresh for 12 months
  • Contains a fuel injector and carburetor cleaner
  • 1 oz (29.6 mL) treats 2 gal. (7.6 L)

Always use fuel stabilizer in gasoline.

Fuel sitting in gas tanks or gas containers for more than 30 days begins to degrade. Also, blended fuels and water in gasoline can form acids that corrode fuel-system components. Protect the investment - use John Deere fuel stabilizer with corrosion preventers and prevent hard starting, surging, lack of power, poor idle, flooding, and will not run or stay running conditions caused by poor-quality fuel. Ask a local John Deere dealer or visit JDParts.

Helpful tips:

  • Add fuel stabilizer every time fuel is purchased.
  • Deere gasoline-powered equipment is recommended to run on a minimum of 87 octane gasoline.
  • John Deere Fuel-Protect for gasoline is safe to use in all types of gasoline, including gasoline/oil mixtures and blended fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol.
  • Use plastic fuel containers to store fuel; ask a local John Deere dealer.
  • For best results, use a spill-proof gas can that automatically seals the gas can vent.
  • Store fuel in a cool, dry, dark place in a sealed fuel can.
  • Fill tank to the top every time the machine is put away.
    • Make sure tank is drained if stored for the winter or treated if left for prolonged periods of time.

Please refer to the operator’s manual for additional recommendations and warranty information.

Fuel related issues are not considered a warrantable condition as there is no defect in the materials or workmanship of the machine.

For more information on fuel, visit John Deere Groundscare.

Smart connectorSmart connector

The John Deere MowerPlus smart connector wirelessly links a Select Series X300 or X500 Tractor to the MowerPlus app on a mobile device:

  • No tools are needed for installation.
  • Detailed set-up instructions are included.
  • The connector sends information to the MowerPlus app via Bluetooth® wireless technology when the tractor key switch is on and the mobile device app is running within range.
  • The wireless connector and app work together to offer helpful information.

Tractor features available for viewing on the MowerPlus app include:

  • Tractor engine hours automatically synchronized to the app
  • In-app maintenance reminders and log, based on engine hours
  • Fuel level - even when away from the tractor, the app remembers information, like the fuel level, from the last synchronization.
    • When thinking ahead about Saturday morning mowing, the operator can make sure the tractor is fueled and ready to go.
  • Help to determine the best time to mow
  • Expert pre-mow optimization tips
  • Maintenance walk-through instructions

The operator is able to visit their device’s app store to see new app features as they are added.

Since the smart connector communicates instrument cluster information, future app releases will be able to provide additional operating recommendations and notifications.

X730 Tractor with 48A Mower DeckX730 Tractor with 48A Mower Deck

The MulchControl attachment for the 48A Mower Deck makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer use
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings

MulchControl baffle closed (similar mower from X700 Series Tractor shown)MulchControl baffle closed (similar mower from X700 Series Tractor shown)

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
    • The MulchControl baffle, or divider, between the left and middle spindles is about half way down. The height is designed to balance the mulching and side-discharge modes.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is open, the divider between the left and middle spindles passes a portion of the material to the discharge opening, along with the material from the middle and right spindle areas.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is closed, this material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.
MulchControl baffle closedMulchControl baffle closed
MulchControl handleMulchControl handle
  • The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
    • The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • Changing from mulching to side discharging or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

  • Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • Usually side-discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
  • Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags
    • With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower will run without material when the baffle is closed.

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharge or bagging when needed.

MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired

MulchControl switchMulchControl switch

The 48-in. (122-cm) electric one-touch MulchControl attachment enhances versatility and productivity. A mower deck equipped with electric one-touch MulchControl not only does an excellent job of mowing and mulching, but it can also be quickly converted to side discharge or mulch mode with the touch of a switch:

  • Easily converts while mowing from side discharge mode to mulch mode or vice versa
  • In mulch mode, controls clippings dispersion in unwanted areas (driveways, landscape beds, near buildings, windows, parking lots, etc.)
  • Reduces cleanup time needed to dispose of clippings
  • Will reduce the amount of material entering a material collection system because, even in the side discharge mode, MulchControl will mulch about one third of the material because of the additional baffles under the mower deck
How electric one-touch MulchControl works

A tractor equipped with the electric one-touch MulchControl attachment delivers unprecedented levels of productivity and versatility. A convenient, dash-mounted switch provides operators the ability to change between side discharging and mulching. A heavy-duty baffle opens and closes easily with the touch of the dash-mounted switch.

  • The MulchControl electric switch is located on the tractor dash to open and close the discharge baffle.
    • The operator is not required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.

MulchControl is well suited to the following mowing situations:

  • For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • For operators who usually side discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
  • For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • For operators who bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags (48A and 54A Mower Decks only)

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharging or bagging when desired.

With electric one-touch MulchControl, operators can convert between modes without interrupting the mowing process, making it practical to change between modes as conditions require:

  • When approaching clean areas like driveways or flowerbeds where clippings would be undesirable
  • When a breeze might blow clippings back onto the operator
  • For side discharge mowing only the areas of the property where grass is too tall or thick for mulching
  • With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, for collecting only the areas of the property where grass is too tall or thick for mulching
    • With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower will run without material when the baffle is closed.
    • Models equipped with a 42A Mower Deck require a MulchControl baffle be removed to install the bagger chute; see 42A versatility explanation for more information.

Advantages of MulchControl include:

  • Performance is improved.
    • Mulching is beneficial because it returns the clippings to the ground as fertilizer, which promotes lawn growth.
    • Clippings are much smaller, which allows them to fall into the grass and be removed from view.
    • Unsightly grass clippings are not blown onto driveways or into flower beds.
    • Fertilizer use is reduced and provides associated environmental benefits.
  • Uptime is increased.
    • Operators can convert quickly between modes, making it possible to change between mulching and side discharging as conditions require.
    • Mulching heavy, thick material can significantly reduce mower productivity. The ability to switch from mulch to side discharge mode ensures productivity, especially in grass too tall or thick to mulch effectively.
  • Cost of operation is reduced.
    • Controlling clipping dispersion reduces cleanup time.
MulchControl limitations

While in the side discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side discharge mode is essentially a partial mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting in wet, high growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States

Such a great machine!

5/5

I really couldn’t justify a series 500 or 700 for that matter with the medium sized lawn I have. This X394 was the perfect compromise. And with some added accessories such as 4-wheel steering and power mower deck lift this mower is a joy to operate.

EXCELLENT MACHINE

5/5

I had owned the D110 42-inch deck with bagging system that did a great job on a smaller lot, after moving to a new home with a large lot, steep hills and a lot of trees, the D110 struggled at some times not to mention the turning radius around trees was kind of a pain. Having to constantly go forwards and backwards around all of the trees was becoming a nuisance and time consuming. I have always been a JD fan and after a lot of research, I opted for the X394. After going to m local AgPro dealer, who was awesome to work with, checking out the mower, I traded in the D110. This is a BEAST of a mower. Not as big as the 500 or 700 series, it is perfect for my size lot with the steep hills and constant mowing around trees. It has performed perfectly and just as I have expected from a JD. Couldnt be happier!

Wow

5/5

Purchased my x394 to replace a Cub Cadet ZT2 and all I can say is wow. The cut is perfect and leaves no clumps or lines of clippings. Had he mulch kit installed with he electric servo to open and close the discharge door ( a little on he pricey side but worth it) very nice when getting close to landscaping. Even with the door open the clippings are very small and disappear in the lawn. Very comfortable to ride. You will not be disappointed in this machine

Pros

  • clean cut
  • power steering

Easily the best mower I have ever owned

5/5

My X394 is the best cutting, easiest to operate and best handling mower I have ever owned; and I have been mowing for 45 years. From the time you climb up in the pilot seat (It feels that way with all the gauges and tilt wheel) this machine is ready to go and is serious about cutting as much grass as you can throw at it. Great dash layout with tons of gauges, power steering, tilt wheel, hydraulic deck height control, PTO button, cruise control, parking brake and reverse in operation button. Separate from the throttle lever, the spring loaded auto-return choke lever gives a quick start. The three blades under deck mowed tall, wet grass with no problem. I could not choke down the big Kawasaki engine no matter how fast I mowed, The handling is amazing with 4 wheel power steering. It will turn a tight circle with an inside radius about the size of dinner plate. Everything about this mower is bigger and beefier than the box store mowers. Worth the price!

Pros

  • 4 wheel steering
  • power steering
  • tilt wheel
  • smooth cutting

Top notch machine

5/5

I purchased this to replace a Z355R because I needed something a little more functional for everyday lawn maintenance needs and wanted something that could pull more than the 250lb max that the Z series could handle. I couldn't be happier with the upgrade and have to say the all-wheel steer really gives the zero-turns a run for their money. If you're on the fence about zero-turns over a traditional tractor, make sure to give these all-wheel steers a try before pulling the trigger. That aside, I'm really impressed with the build quality of this machine and the added features that I wasn't used to. I was hesitant to purchase because of the price tag, but I feel like it was a bargain after taking ownership and putting it to work. You won't be disappointed!

Pros

  • all-wheel steer
  • ability to add accessories
  • build quality

Cons

  • price?

Awesome Lawn mower!

5/5

I have had this mower for about 2-1/2 years now. I love this thing to death, but I think, like most people, after a few years you just need something a little bigger. The only downfall for this machine is turning sharp on a hill and still having enough traction not to slip. For that very reason, I believe I need to upgrade to the X584 w/ a diff lock. Outside of that, this is an excellent machine, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Pros

  • tight turning radius
  • plenty of power

Cons

  • more aggressive tire option

4 wheel steer is great!

4/5

This is my 2nd full year of ownership. I previously had a 324 four wheel steer. The added power steering and hydraulic lift are a real plus. I have a lot of trees to mow around and I too have an issue with the deck rollers scalping around some trees that have a taper around them. They do need to figure out a modification on this. I mow approximately 3 acres of trees and lawn on a varying landscape and the 4 wheel steer is a lifesaver. Also, the mulch deck is prone to retaining grass and requires cleaning more than I would like. But overall, am happy with the unit. Have about 270 hours on it.

Pros

  • easil manuvers around everyt
  • reliable

Cons

  • deck wheels
  • deck accumu

Turn Yard Work to Yard fun

5/5

I have owned John Deere Garden equipment for the last 15 years. While still in good condition, I retired my L108 tractor in favor of a new X394. I added manual mulching control and blades and a front brush guard. I have a modest size lawn that rises in height about 20 feet from the pond in my back yard. I have lots of curved flower beds to navigate. I have mowed my lawn twice with the new tractor. To say this powerful 48" deck unit is overkill is an understatement. I easily mows my 100 x 120 foot lot in a matter of minutes. Beautiful cut, 4 wheel power steering makes all maneuvering quite simple, and I quickly mastered the extra features of this new unit. My only observation is that I really should be mowing my side of the neighborhood to allow this tractor to really show what it can do. Nothing runs like a Deere.

Pros

  • hydrolic lifter for the mower deck and the pto

Cons

  • brush guard lowered first to open the hood.

No Mower deck manual

3/5

What a pain. I bought this tractor and the 48A mower deck. I used to have a 345 tractor and 48 deck. This deck has two belts, and the owners manual had no diagram of the belt routing. I owned my JD 345 and 48 deck for 15 years, and deck came with manual and was not as nearly hard to remove and service deck. THIS deck, (Accel 48A) I've spent six hours trying to get the belts back on, after cleaning the deck. No explanation in the manual on how to route the belts. And no, it's not obvious how the belts go on. So you know, be prepared for a pain in the neck. Grrrr

"Lawn Lathe"- Precision Cut Tool

5/5

This is my first riding mower. Go big or go home, right? Cutting St.Augustine grass is a breeze for this thing. I have a 1/2 acre with a number of palm trees to cut around. That's where it's precision really shines! I wish the deck would cut at 5" tho. Some of the plastic has come loose around the tilt column also. Other than that, its been really solid over the past 5 months of ownership. I never wash it off, just leaf blower and always try to cut when it's dry. Also wouldn't mind if Deere offered some other colors too. Black maybe?

Pros

  • great cut
  • easy handling
  • plenty power

Cons

  • thirsty
  • plastic quality
  • no 5" cut height

This mower is a joy to use.

5/5

I have always used Craftsman mowers and got pretty good results. My x394 is many times better than the Craftsman. My only complaint is the deck wheels should swivel. When making a tight turn they tend to scrape the ground sliding sideways leaving a circle around trees. Power steering and deck lift are great. My deck washout doesn't seem to do much but not a major problem to me. My wife has no desire to use my mower she much rather see me on my green tractor.

Pros

  • power four wheel steering
  • deck lift
  • digital guages

Cons

  • deck wheels

Best Mower I Ever Owned

5/5

This is not your Big Box Store rider, quality through and through. Excellent turning radius, power steering makes mowing a breeze, for someone with arthritis and lots of obstacles to mow around. The hydraulic lift and engagement make this feel like you are not operating a basic model, its quality you can feel. Not a cheap mower but you get what you pay for. Love my new x394 and my dealer is just awesome for service!

Pricey, but worth it to me

5/5

I have an odd shaped 1/2 acre in lower Michigan and my self propelled walk behind mower would take me about 3 hours. Because its a 2nd home, that was too much time to spend cutting the grass since I am only up there on weekends (and its cuts into my boating & family time). Did a lot of research on mowers and the X394 stood out to me. Its my first riding mower and is VERY easy to use. I had the dealership add the grill guard and the mulch kit. My lawn cutting went from 3 hours to less than 45 minutes and it looks better too!! Love the 4-wheel steering and the hydraulic mower deck - I would purchase it again!!

Hard to clean deck

3/5

I replaced a GT235. When I purchased this mower last year I thought the under deck clean out was a good idea. But I wash my deck every time I mow. The top of the deck is very hard to clean. The blade pulleys are recessed into the deck and hold water plus the belts are too close to the deck and you can not wash clippings and debris under them. It takes twice as long to clean after mowing. Also, because of the 4 wheel steer, the tires are narrower and where you have to mow the same area, it leaves wheel marks in the yard even when not too wet. On a plus, the power steering and power deck are great.

Pros

  • power steering and power deck

Cons

  • hard to clean deck
  • leaves tire tracks in lawn

Can't get this mower away from my wife.

5/5

Recently traded our 1996 LX 176 for a new X 394 with 4 wheel steer and hydraulic deck lift. I initially thought I wanted a Zero Turn like the commercial guys use but since my wife does as much mowing as I do she was concerned about the learning curve for the zero turn. After a lot of shopping and comparisons we went with the X394 and could not be happier. The cut quality is better than any zero turn I have seen. The power steering and the hydraulic deck lift are features I didn't know I needed but once you have them will not want to do without them. My only complaint is I have trouble getting to it before my wife does.

X394 A great mowing machine

5/5

I own a 1970 JD 110, 46 years old and running great. I traded in a 2010 X304 for the new 2016 X394. I wanted a lawn tractor with upgraded features and specifically a serviceable transaxle with a replaceable filter. I enjoy the 4 wheel steer, power steering, hydraulic deck, digital dash with fuel gage, larger tires and the mulch control.

Pros

  • 4 wheel steer
  • power steering
  • hydraulic deck
  • digital dash
  • mulch control

Cons

  • hard on gas
  • pricey

A Joy to Mow!

5/5

I have owned a 1997 JD LX 178 for 19 years and had to finally replace it last week. After much research, analysis, study of features, benefits, etc. and extensive searching in Georgia for a mower--I finally settled upon and found the new X394 at the John Deere Dealer, Sun South, in Carrollton, Georgia. I drove out to the dealership to meet the salesperson, Mike , who had the mower sitting out for my inspection. After a thorough period of instruction on how to operate the mower, I followed Mike into his office and signed an interest friendly finance package offered by John Deere Financial. They delivered the mower to my home that same afternoon--- My first day mowing with the X394 was AMAZING!!! It's engine power, steering ease, maneuverability and overall cutting ability was light years ahead of my now retired LX178. It's ability to cut through high thick Meyer Zoysia grass was remarkable--- I told the salesman Mike--it cut through that grass like a hot knife through butter!!! Totally impressive! I know this model is not inexpensive, and has all of the bells and whistles others may not find necessary----but for this 70 year old, all those extra perks like 4 wheel steer and power steering make the X394 a breeze to drive and operate. I do not regret for one minute having purchased the top of the line X300 series Lawn Tractor. I will be purchasing the mulching kit next week

Pros

  • beautiful to look at and amazing performance.

New for 2016

4/5

Upgraded from a x360 to this tractor. The x360's mulch attachment was hard to get on and off and left a trail of undispersed grass if the grass had any kind of length to it before you mowed. New deck seems to have vastly improved these issues. Gas gauge is a much needed improvement. When going around older trees with a berm, the deck will often cut too deep on the right side and leave a "ring" around the tree. Don't know if this is because of the 4 wheel steer or what but it almost needs another antiscalp wheel on the right side of the deck to stop this. Deere really screwed up on the 4 wheel steer tractors and the mounting of an attached spreader. Your pre 2016 spreader won't mount because the 2016 tractors do not have the CarGo mount bushings behind the seat, The NEW speader for 2016 models mounts fine to mounting plate instead EXCEPT for the 4 wheel steer tractors. You have to get down on the ground and futz with bracket bolts to mount and dismount your spreader ever time...YUK. Pay extra for 4 wheel steer and now you can't easily mount and remove your spreader...thanks, not. Fix is to purchase the CarGo mount bushings from Deere and pop holes in your fender behind the seat for them. You will also need a couple 4" long 3/8" bolts and a couple pieces of pipe that the bolts can go through, 2.5" long for standoffs to mount the hitch hole bracket away from the spreader mount to fit the new tractor. Total cost is less than $25 and you end up with the same easy on / easy off spreader that you had before. Shame on Deere for this engineering screw up. Otherwise, a great upgrade to any of the pre 2016 x300 series line up.

Pros

  • better mulch control
  • better long grass ability
  • gas gauge

Cons

  • missing cargo mount bushings
