Features

Engine is powerful and smooth-running premium V-twin design

21.5-hp (16-kW) engine 21.5-hp (16-kW) engine
Engine oil and fuel filters Engine oil and fuel filters

The S240 Tractor has a large 44.3-cu in. (726-cc) displacement engine with premium features that provide superior performance and reliability:

  • Large cleanout ports, integrated into the engine shroud, are located over the cylinder heads to allow for easy inspection and removal of any debris that may have collected there.
  • Premium engine oil and air filtering systems and cooling design provide increased reliability and engine life.

The 21.5-hp (16-kW) V-twin engine provides plenty of power and torque to handle tough mulching, mowing, and bagging conditions:

  • V-twin cylinder design for greater torque, lower vibration, and improved sound quality
  • Electronic ignition for fast starts
  • Cast-iron cylinder liners for longer engine life
  • Overhead valves for excellent power and fuel economy
  • Full-pressure lubrication and oil filter for cleaner oil, prolonging engine life and extending the time between oil changes
    • Also more effective when operating the tractor on an incline
  • In-line fuel filter for reliable operation
Engine speed lever and spring-loaded choke lever Engine speed lever and spring-loaded choke lever
Engine hood in open position Engine hood in open position

The engine speed lever and choke control lever are separate controls:

  • The engine speed lever is easy to use - there is no need to worry about pushing too far and engaging the choke as on single throttle/choke lever systems.
  • The choke lever is spring loaded so the operator cannot accidentally operate the tractor with the choke on.

Engine hood opens wide for easy access to service points:

  • It is easy to inspect and clean the engine area.
  • Important service points are exposed.
  • Cleanout ports designed into the engine shroud make cleaning the engine cooling fins easy.
  • The high-quality engine used in the S240 does not require an 8-hour oil and filter change because improvements in the manufacturing process and quality of parts, components, and oils have eliminated the need for the short interval oil change requirement.

48-in. (122-cm) Accel Deep™ (48A) Mower Deck cuts clean and is versatile

S240 with Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck S240 with Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck
S240 with Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck S240 with Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck

The 48-in. (122-cm) Accel Deep Mower Deck is a stamped-steel, deep, flat-top design that delivers excellent cut quality, productivity, cleanliness, durability, and versatility. Optimal performance and dispersion of clippings is provided, even at faster mowing speeds or in tall grass:

  • 4.83-in. (12.3-cm) depth throughout the entire deck shell allows for optimum mowing, mulching, and bagging performance.
    • Optional MulchControl™ system provides superior mulching performance and versatility.
  • Stamped-steel design eliminates sharp edges and corners where material can build up and diminish mowing performance.
  • Mower deck is suspended from the vehicle for a smooth and level cut.
    • Adjustable mower wheels positioned just above ground level help reduce scalping.
  • 0.25-in. (6.4-mm) cut-height increments allow mower to be set at the desired cut height
  • Compatible with high-performance Power Flow™ material collection system

NOTE: Optional front center rollers shown in above mower deck photos.

Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:

  • Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
    • Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
  • Clean flow of material out of the discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
  • Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal recutting, and an even distribution of clippings.
Productivity - getting the job done fast

Right side of Accel Deep mower deck Right side of Accel Deep mower deck

Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of recutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:

  • Greatly improves mowers capacity to maintain excellent mowing performance in difficult mowing conditions and at higher speeds

Large discharge opening is both high and wide to handle more material:

  • Gives a smooth, even discharge of clippings at all mowing speeds
  • Reduces the chance of plugging, especially important when operating in wet, thick, or dense grass and when bagging
Cleanliness - for the mower and the operator
Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck
Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck

The flat-top shape of the deck stamping is optimal for keeping the deck and the operator clean:

  • There are few places to catch and hold material on top and underneath the deck.
    • Top of deck stays cleaner, reducing time and effort needed for cleaning and service
    • Underside of deck is self-cleaning to maintain optimum performance without build-up of material to interfere with the flow of air and clippings
    • Less need to clean and remove buildup of material from underside deck
  • The depth of the Accel Deep mower deck minimizes the amount of material that escapes from the front of the deck.
    • Limited amount of material drifts onto the operator and mower deck
    • Even for material discharged out of the chute, less recutting results in larger pieces that are less likely to end up on the operator
    • Mulching prevents the discharge of material completely, and the MulchControl system makes mulching a practical solution for most mowing situations.

Cleaning a mower deck, both top and bottom, is one of the most frequent maintenance activities:

  • The flat-top design reduces places for material to build up and makes material that does collect easy to remove.
Mower wash port Mower wash port
Mower wash port with hose connector Mower wash port with hose connector

A wash port is provided to make cleaning the underside of the mower deck easy.

  • A hose connector is included with the mower deck.
Superior durability is designed in
Spindle pocket with flip-up cover Spindle pocket with flip-up cover
Easy-to-adjust mower wheel and mower side reinforcement Easy-to-adjust mower wheel and mower side reinforcement

The 48A Mower Deck has strong spindle pockets, to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough service:

  • Stamped from strong 10-gauge, 0.135-in. (3.4-mm) steel
  • Ribs in the deck shell add strength where it is needed.

Mower wheels are heavy duty:

  • Provides greater strength and durability for longer, trouble-free life.
  • Setting wheels to the correct height for the cutting height is quick and easy.

Low-tension belt-drive design reduces the side load on engine lower bearings and mower deck bearings for longer life.

The mower deck features a 5/8-in. (16-mm) diameter solid-steel rod side bumper that provides extra strength and protection.

Dual-stage E-coat and powder-paint coatings provide extra protection from rust.

Mower blades

Side-discharge blades can be used with the Power Flow system when bagging.

Mulching blades are included with the optional MulchControl attachment. They can be used for mulching, side discharging, and bagging.

Versatility - easy to change between side discharge, mulch, and bagging modes

The 48A Mower Deck is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another

  • With an optional MulchControl system installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side discharging to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever.
  • The Power Flow rear bagger can be used with MulchControl by simply using the MulchControl lever to move the mulch baffle to the side-discharge position.

48A MulchControl handle 48A MulchControl handle

The optional MulchControl system makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • Creates a beautiful looking lawn
  • Smaller grass clippings disappear into the lawn canopy
  • Reduces fertilizer needs
  • Grass clippings are not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • No need to dispose of bags of clippings
How MulchControl works
MulchControl baffle closed (shown on X300 42A mower deck) MulchControl baffle closed (shown on X300 42A mower deck)
MulchControl baffle open (shown on X300 42A mower deck) MulchControl baffle open (shown on X300 42A mower deck)

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl system includes an adjustable MulchControl baffle near the discharge chute and fixed baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
  • The MulchControl handle is on top of the mower deck and is used to open and close the MulchControl baffle.
  • When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material flows freely out the discharge deflector or into a material collection system.
  • When the MulchControl baffle is closed, material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

  • For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • For operators who usually side discharge, but would like to close the chute to control clippings in some areas
  • For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • For operators who collect clippings but want to go farther before emptying the material collection system

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings.

MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl still mulches about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired

When bagging with MulchControl on a 48A mower deck, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower runs without material when the baffle is closed.

Rear baffle (A) must be removed for bagging with MulchControl with 42A mower decks Rear baffle (A) must be removed for bagging with MulchControl with 42A mower decks

When bagging with MulchControl on a 42A mower deck, the cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl blades. However, the rear MulchControl baffle (A) needs to be removed to install the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.

MulchControl compatibility

Each MulchControl system is an optional field-installed attachment and includes everything needed for handle actuation: baffles, handle, and mulch blades.

7P Poly Utility Cart Every owner of a John riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials including firewood, lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment. 7P Poly Utility Cart The cart has a premium molded, high-density polyethylene box construction. Compression molding process allows polyethylene to be the optimum thickness in all areas for superior strength and durability. Polyethylene body will not rust or dent; it stays looking new longer. 0.75-in. (2-cm) x 2-in. (5-cm) stake pockets are molded in to make the addition of side extensions easy. Two vertical 0.75-in. (2-cm) molded channels on each side allow easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments. Ribs in the box bottom add strength and prevent the shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart. Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; there is no tailgate to loosen or remove. Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment. Pneumatic tires provide turf tread for good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance. Wheels 7P Utility Cart wheel Wheels are mounted on a solid, one-piece axle for durability. Iron and Oilite® wheel bearings with grease fittings provide lubrication for long life. The pneumatic tires offer the following: Good flotation Minimal rolling resistance Shock absorption Sloped tailgate Sloped tailgate for easy emptying A sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; there is no tailgate to loosen or remove. Tractor hitch Spring-pin tractor hitch A large-diameter hitch pin provides plenty of strength: Fast, easy attachment to the tractor hitch Spring pin to ensure the pin stays in place Tilt latch Tilt latch An easy-to-use, spring-loaded dump latch allows tilting the box for easier unloading. A steep dump angle makes emptying the cart easier. 6.5-bu (229-L) hopper Power Flow blower The BUC10126 6.5-bu (229-L) Power Flow grass collection system includes the hopper, chute, and blower. Mower blades are not included, as the bagger works well with either the standard side-discharge blades or mulching blades and the MulchControl™ system. It expands versatility of an S240 Tractor equipped with a 48-in. (122-cm) Accel Deep™ Mower Deck.NOTE: Front ballast for the tractor is recommended, especially when operating on hills or inclines. The blower, chute, and fan are molded from high impact polymer: Power Flow is lightweight for easy handling and minimal effect on mowing smoothness. It will not rust or corrode. Fan and housing resist wear and abrasion caused by sand. Contoured design gives a clean appearance and smooth grass flow. Fan is driven with V-belt from a sheave added to the top right mower spindle. The chute includes a convenient handle and a fill indicator that tells the operator when the bags are full. Specifications Capacity  6.5 bu (229 L) Material:      Hopper top  High impact polypropylene    Chute  Polyethylene    Blower housing  Nylon    Fan  Ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene    Bags  Polyester Filling  Directly into bags for emptying on ground or in trailer or into plastic liners Fan diameter  13 in. 6.5-bu (229-L) hopper, chute, and Power Flow blower on an S240 (front view) 6.5-bu (229-L) hopper, chute, and Power Flow blower on an S240 (rear view) Overview The bagger kit can be set up without tools in minutes, provides efficient bagging performance, and has easy-to-empty bags. This is also commonly known as a material collection system (MCS). Benefits Bagging Two durable bags provide a generous 6.5-bu (229-L) capacity. The lower chute provides smooth airflow to reduce the chance of plugging. A duct directs air leaving the hopper toward the ground for clean operation. Loose-knit bags and a large exit duct allow more air flow to provide complete bag filling in wet grass conditions. Emptying Monitor bag filling progress through a window; see light coming through the loose-knit bag or watch for grass lying against it. The hopper lid stays open while you empty the bags. The bags slide out with a pull and the handles make emptying easy. The hopper cover automatically latches when you close it. Additional details Front ballast is recommended when bagging, especially on hills or inclines. Follow instructions in your operator’s manual. Use of rear tow-behind attachments that could contact the hopper assembly is not recommended. Installation: Special mower blades are not required for bagging. The kit is easy to remove and stores compactly. No parts are left behind to interfere with other attachments The Power Flow blower propels the collected grass and leaves into the hopper. Contoured design gives a clean appearance and smooth grass flow. The fan is driven by belt parts included in the kit. The Power Flow blower cannot be added to a bagger kit that was not originally equipped with it. The five-blade fan runs at about 3200 rpm when engine speed is full. The system is lightweight for easy handling. The 6.5-bu (229-L) hopper, chute, and Power Flow blower are for use with: S240 Tractors with 48-in. (122-cm) Accel Deep (48A) mower deck

Front Blade

46-in. (117-cm) Front Blade The front blade is excellent for pushing light snow or other loose material. The blade is constructed for good performance and long life: Blade surface is curved to roll rather than push material, which requires less power and increased blade capacity. Bolt-on, replaceable cutting edge takes most of the wear to greatly extend the useful life of the blade. For operator convenience, the blade comes with standard equipment for controlling it from the tractor seat: Blade can be angled left, right, or used in the straight-ahead position. 8-oz (237-mL) Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer John Deere Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer is a unique formula developed to ensure optimum performance and protection year-round:  Has corrosion preventers For lawn and garden equipment and other gasoline-powered vehicles Ensures quick starts in all two- and four-cycle engines Use in gasoline, gasoline-oil mixture, and ethanol blends Use to treat gas cans at each fill-up or use at every fill-up of vehicle Keeps fuel fresh for 12 months Contains a fuel injector and carburetor cleaner 1 oz (29.6 mL) treats 2 gal. (7.6 L) Always use fuel stabilizer in gasoline.Fuel sitting in gas tanks or gas containers for more than 30 days begins to degrade. Also, blended fuels and water in gasoline can form acids that corrode fuel-system components. Protect the investment - use John Deere fuel stabilizer with corrosion preventers and prevent hard starting, surging, lack of power, poor idle, flooding, and will not run or stay running conditions caused by poor-quality fuel. Ask a local John Deere dealer or visit John Deere Parts. Helpful tips: Add fuel stabilizer every time fuel is purchased. Deere gasoline-powered equipment is recommended to run on a minimum of 87 octane gasoline. John Deere Fuel-Protect for gasoline is safe to use in all types of gasoline, including gasoline/oil mixtures and blended fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol. Use plastic fuel containers to store fuel; ask a local John Deere dealer. For best results, use a spill-proof gas can that automatically seals the gas can vent. Store fuel in a cool, dry, dark place in a sealed fuel can. Fill tank to the top every time the machine is put away. Make sure tank is drained if stored for the winter or treated if left for prolonged periods of time. Please refer to the operator’s manual for additional recommendations and warranty information.Fuel related issues are not considered a warrantable condition as there is no defect in the materials or workmanship of the machine.  For more information on fuel, visit John Deere Groundscare.

Mulch Kits

MulchControl advantages and benefits Z535M ZTrak™ with Accel Deep 48A Mower X730 Tractor with 48A Mower Deck The MulchControl attachment for the 48A Mower Deck makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include: A beautiful looking lawn Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds Less fertilizer use Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings How MulchControl works MulchControl baffle open (similar mower from X700 Series Tractor shown) MulchControl baffle closed (similar mower from X700 Series Tractor shown) MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain: The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck. The MulchControl baffle, or divider, between the left and middle spindles is about half way down. The height is designed to balance the mulching and side-discharge modes. When the MulchControl baffle is open, the divider between the left and middle spindles passes a portion of the material to the discharge opening, along with the material from the middle and right spindle areas. When the MulchControl baffle is closed, this material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf. MulchControl baffle closed MulchControl handle The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle. The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode. Changing from mulching to side discharging or vice versa takes only a few seconds. MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations: Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long Usually side-discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower will run without material when the baffle is closed. MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharge or bagging when needed. MulchControl limitations While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage: When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired

Tire Chains

TerraGrip Traction Belt Protect your driving surface. TerraGrip Traction Belts offer enhanced traction on snow, mud, dirt, wet asphalt, and wet concrete surfaces. They will not scratch or chip concrete, asphalt, or aggregate drives or walkways. The proven reliability of the traditional steel chain attachment system is used and combined with the performance and durability of reinforced rubber slats. The rubber slats wrap around the tire so only rubber touches the driving surface. The result is aggressive traction without the risk of surface damage, that can happen with traditional chains. Features: Rubber slats surround the tire and will not damage driveways or sidewalks. No steel touches the driving surface. No-tools installation utilizes a traditional steel chain attachment system. Traction is improved on all surfaces, especially loose material (snow, dirt, mud, sand, etc.). TerraGrip Traction Belts are approved for John Deere 100, 200, X300, X500 M-T, and X700 Series Tractors. Another great John Deere purchase

5/5

I bought this tractor after I had to retire my T150 after 15 years. I really like the Kawasaki motor the S240 has whose performance handles my mixed terrain of my yard. I believe this Tractor will be another great investment for the long run. I expect many years using it.

Disappointed

2/5

Disappointed. The first thing that was irritating was the brake pedal. Terrible design. The rubber kept rolling and working it's way off the stem. The first time I mowed, the engine was perfect...for awhile. After about 20 minutes it started cutting out and died. I would get it cranked back up after several tries and it would cut out and die again after about 5 minutes. I tried it again a week later and the same thing happened. I returned it for a refund. The dealer said it might be "bad gas". Well, it was the gas that came with the purchase.

So far, so good...

I am mostly satisfied with the S240. My only complaint is that the rubber brake pedal slides off somewhat frequently. The first time it happened, I accidentally ran over it and it shot out like a missile! It also took a video to show the difference between throttle and choke levers and positions.

First Time Owner

5/5

I bought my John Deere S240 lawn tractor about a month ago. This is my first riding mower after about 40 years of pushing/walking behind a small mower. I decided that after my two “son powered mowers” grew up and moved out of the house, that it was time to treat myself. I am so glad that I did!

Glad I bought it.

4/5

I bought this more about six weeks ago. It replaced a GT 275 that was purchased in the mid 90s. I bought it mainly for the two cylinder Kawasaki engine, three cutter blades and the heavier duty transmission. I mow about 1.75 acres on a regular basis. I’m happy with how it rides and the relatively even cut though some of my terrain is pretty bumpy. I don’t like all the safety mechanisms. You have to hold a button down while mowing and backing up, And I can’t get off the mower while the engine is running to pick up sticks and other debris that might be in the yard.

Great lawn mower except for the exhaust heat.

4/5

Owned slightly over one month. The only issue I have has is the exhaust will "burn" the grass if the mower sits in one place too long (l minute) which was occurring initially since I was learning how to use a riding lawn mower. Does John Deere have an exhaust shield to divert the exhaust away from the ground to prevent heat from reaching the grass? I have seen posts that this is common with John Deere, Club Cadet, etc. so wondering why it hasn't been addressed.

Great ride !

5/5

I bought this S240 a little over a month ago, so far I love the unit. I was surprised when I registered it that the unit was last years model but it does have the warranty. I have had a small problem with the hood and the dealer has been wonderful in ordering parts and working on getting it fixed. My last unit lasted over 25 years so hopefully this will do the same. I just put the bagger back on it today, getting ready for Fall and it was very easy to install. PS I love the sound of the 21.5 HP engine, it purrs (roars)

Second generation Deere owner

5/5

The first motivation for buying my John Deere brand mower was that my grandfather was a farmer and he owned nothing but JD. But once I talked to the dealer and saw the quality, the safety features and the customer service, I was satisfied that John Deere was going to be the right machine for me. It does what it's supposed to do, reliable, simple to operate and it's comfortable to mow two acres. I believe, like my grandfather did, nothing runs like a Deere.

I'm very pleased with the quality and performance of my new S240. I still have my 2006 JD LT 150 that still runs and performs and is used by other family members. Annual maintenance is the key!

Well engineered tractor!

5/5

I bought this just over a month ago. I have used it 3 times so far to mow my 2 acre yard. It does a great job. The tight turning radius makes it easy to mow around my many trees. With the 48” mowing deck, I get my yard done quicker than I did with my old craftsman zero turn mower. Adjusting the mower deck height is easy. Flip up covers over mower deck belt pulleys make clean out of debris easy.

Outstanding quality and features.

5/5

I took delivery of my JD S240 on June 18, 2024. Thus far, I'm incredibly happy with my purchase. I did a fair amount of research in order to make my decision. I enjoy taking care of my lawn but over the past year or so, it has become more of a challenge for me. This is my first riding mower. What a difference it makes. What what used to take me well over an hour to mow, I now do in about 40 minutes which includes the areas that I have to get into with my walk behind. Now, I am not at all physically exhausted. I can do my lawn more frequently and I actually look forward to mowing my lawn again.

John Deere wins over Walker !

5/5

I purchased my S240 about a month ago and it has proved to be an overall great choice. Having owned a Walker 42" for 20 years the choice was difficult. Ultimately it came down to walk-behind versus riding and price. After working through a few quality issues regarding loose fasteners and some apparent shipping damage (front bumper) I have become quite find of the overall performance, cut-quality and easy handling.

LOVE our NEW JOHN DEER S240

5/5

We've had our new lawn tractor for a couple of months and I admit, I LOVE IT! I enjoy mowing the 1 acre lot our home sits on, but the new lawn tractor from John Deere makes it a pleasure. It is more comfortable and less noisy than our 20 year old mower, it has a 48" deck that gets the job done efficiently and is easy to maneuver around our house, gardens and trees.

This is a step up from my 118 that was years old with lots of hours. However - I am not overly pleased with the angled opening for the fuel tank...which was pointed out by the salesman and said it could be a bit more 'difficult' for fueling (and a funnel is a must) from that fuel tank opening on my old JD rider. I am getting used to the differences. I do like the slide out feature on the collection bags vs the old rider where I had to pick up the bags to remove. The system to lift and hold up the cover of the collection unit seems cheap and there is just a small notch to catch on a small piece of metal to hold the cover up. One bump and it comes down - on you if you have your hands under the elevated cover to remove the grass and clean the track that the bags slide in and out on. That feature is plastic - seems to be 'cheaply' constructed. So did JD cut corners on cost or to make it more lightweight?

Don’t waste your money

1/5

I am not at all impressed with this tractor. I bought it at the end of last month and have had multiple problems. When I first received it, the deck wasn’t levelled right and it was missing a rubber hood guard. I noticed the first time I mowed my yard that it couldn’t be run more than 2.2 hrs without running out of gas. The hood guard was replaced and today it loosened while mowing and then came off completely somewhere in the middle of my yard. After using the tractor for 9.6 hrs I’ve had to add 18 oz of oil just to keep the oil level halfway up the full zone. I haven’t owned the tractor 30 days. The service center is backlogged for weeks and I’d have to hire someone to mow my 2+ acres in the meantime. I’m tempted to just return it.

Nothing but problems with this mower. Only have it two years. The rear adjusting rod fell off causing the deck to drop on that side. The PTO does not work at times and when the grass gets a little thick it leaves strips causing me to mow certain parts of the yard twice. It handles good and I like how it turns. The seat is comfortable as well that's why I give three stars. I would not recommend this John Deere mower.

Cutting Deck Sucks

3/5

I purchased this item last Fall from Atlantic Tractor in Hanover, PA. It was delivered March 2024. Nothing but problems with the deck. They couldn't seem to fix it. I cannot raise the height of deck to highest level. It stops 2 levels down, almost 1 level, which is scalping parts of my lawn. They tell me it won't go any higher as the deck is hitting the bottom of the tractor!!!!!!! Then why do they have 2 higher levels. I think it's been attached wrong or someone is giving me a line of bull.

Great Choice

So far so good! Had this S240 for about a month now (about 5 hours use) and have used it 4 or 5 times on my 1 acre lawn. First time owner of any type of lawn tractor of any kind and am highly impressed. Great turning radius for those tight areas and powerful enough to pull and cut the lawn on the few hills in the yard. Still getting use to it and still haven't figured out all the options (cutting in reverse). Cut is even and much easier to use and quicker than my old self propelled walk behind. Hoping for long term reliability and longevity out of this S240. Can see why Consumer Reports gives it such a high rating over other John Deere models and their competition.

Cuts great, seems quieter than my tractor

4/5

I bought this a month ago and have used it 3 times in between rain and tornado warnings. Cuts well, raising and lowering the deck is not hard at all for this 65yr old. I don't like that when I back up the blades stop and you either hold the blade override button, or just back up and lower the rpms and reset to PTO to the deck, minor issue, and well it is for safety. Seat is fine, turn radius is not quite a zero turn but I wanted a mini tractor to cut grass and do yard work for my wife and myself and not have to break out the tractor. I bought this so I wouldn't leave ruts in my lawn using my tractor. Let see how it does @200hrs.

Happy with this mower

5/5

Overall, I am very pleased with this mower. It starts easily, runs great, and does a good job of cutting the grass. My one complaint would be with the mulching option. The mulch plug recommended for this Accel deep deck does not fit very well, and leaves a narrow opening in front of the plug. John Deere seems to be pushing mulch kits which go under the deck and are made of plastic.

200 Series is worth the upgrade

5/5

I have had the mower for a month now. Nearly every thing about it is fantastic. One small thing is the rubber on the foot brake keeps wanting to slide off. Other than that I can’t find a thing I would change. It cuts clean and is easy to maneuver.

the kawasaki engine is the best

5/5

had a john deere GT235 for many years with the Kawasaki engine. it was the best thing i ever bought had to get rid of it because my freedom 42 inch deck finally wore out and couldn't get another deck for it because they changed the design of their decks. after trying two other brands i am now back to john deere again and its the best thing i ever did. i wanted the Kawasaki engine again and got it with this model and other features that i wanted without getting extra features i didn't want or need. so far this is working perfect for me. i really like this model and i also just got the mulching kit for it and put it on myself. was easy to do and the directions were easy to follow. only problem i had was the bar that mounts on the deck itself was bent so bad that i had to take it back to the dealer and got a new one from them. the mulching kit works perfect and lets you mulch or not mulch with the simple sliding of the handle to open or close the mulching door. i like that it gives you that option to mulch or not.

Excellent Mower with a solid deck

4/5

I have only had the S240 for a month but so far I like it. Comfortable unlike other riding mowers, had a very good turning radius and the Kawasaki 2.1 HP twin cylinder is a powerful motor. The Accel deck is heavy duty and very solid. The fuel gauge is a nice perk. The carburetor is easily accessible and the air filter looks to be standard. This mower is very quiet compared to other brands of riding mowers. There is some vibration that can be felt The reverse cut push button feature is an inconvenience. The hydrostatic transmission engages rather abruptly.

A great tractor

4/5

This tractor replaced a competitor’s tractor that I had for 10 years. The S240 is a great tractor. The only issue I had with it is that the deck wasn’t adjusted properly by the dealer. Which ment that the first cut scalped my lawn.

Powerful and reliable for our 1 acre property

5/5

Purchased a DS240 48" Accel Deep from James River Equipment in Virginia, brand new, in March 2024. Salesperson delivered the unit directly to my driveway! The mower works great, has plenty of power, cuts almost any size grass with ease. I also purchased a Gorilla Cart and use the mower to haul the Gorilla Cart, filled with trees, cuttings, fence posts, wire fencing, tools and etc all over the property. Saves me the physical labor and time of moving these items around myself. I use the DS240 and the Gorilla Cart to haul tree cuttings to the far side of our property for disposal. I enjoy using the JD DS240 Lawn Tractor for all kinds of outdoor work around the house. So far, so good. And, in my neighborhood, there is also pride of ownership while riding the Green and Yellow!

Overall, solid performer with design flaws.

4/5

Only had for 6 weeks, but so far, an overall solid performer with a great engine. Kawasaki engine runs quieter than Briggs and Stratton. It is VERY difficult to adjust the blade to its highest setting at 4 inches. Repair tech at John Deere vendor told me nothing can be done to make it any easier to pull blade up to highest setting. Only suggestion was to put more air in tires to raise cutting height of blade up to full 4 inches. If mower sits for more than about 30 seconds in grass, a 6-8-inch spot in grass will be burned. 2 significant design flaws that could have easily been prevented. My experience with purchasing the lawn tractor was excellent.

4/5

Good mower, like the quality of cut and tight turning radius, but something has to be done with the fact you have to push a button every time you want to mow in reverse. It doesn’t sound that bad but if you back up and stop then you need to back up more, you have to push the button again or the blades shut off. Terrible design.

Great engine; terrible cut not worth the money

2/5

Purchased this almost a year ago; only reason I am not giving one star is because the Kawasaki engine is great. The dealer is also filled with good people and this is no reflection on them. But the product overall is no better than fair and that is a stretch considering how new it is and the money paid. Certainly not worth the price paid. Pros: Kawasaki engine, deck wash fitting; dealer personnel Cons: Terrible uneven cut; engine cutoff feature when slightly off seat First, the engine cutoff safety feature is fine but it shouldn't be so sensitive. I can't even lean without it sputtering. But the main issue is the cut. Uneven, leaves strips. I cut at the highest setting because any lower will scalp the entire lawn on parts of the cutting swath. I use my Honda push mower now and only use this for the utility cart and aerator.

Issues with 3 hours and no post sale ownership

1/5

3.4 hours on my S240 unit, 30 days old. Forward / reverse pedal linkage to the transmission control lever separated while mowing. A locking pin fell off or was never on the linkage, the pin literally costs $1.21 and John Deere will not cover it and claims it’s not a warranty issue! So pray and hope nothing goes wrong with your unit. Because when it does they will claim it’s not a warranty issue and will not own the issue. I spent $4200 with installed attachments and John Deere won’t fork over a pin for $1.21 on a brand new unit. Think about that before you make your purchase.
