The Gator™ XUV Crossover Series Utility Vehicle has a precision-engineered drivetrain system that fully utilizes engine power, optimizing acceleration, hauling, towing, and hill-climbing capabilities. Power is transmitted from the engine through a continuously-variable clutch system to the transaxle.

Key elements of the drive system include:

Variable-speed drive
Variable-speed drive Variable-speed drive

The variable-speed drive consists of two clutches and a drive belt:

  • Drive clutch is attached to the engine.
  • Driven clutch is attached to the transaxle.

Features include:

  • The engine braking system utilizes a tight belt for operation, requiring an idler sleeve on the primary clutch for neutral. The secondary clutch is a build-on-shaft design that utilizes a cam to tune the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. The clutch will stay engaged, providing deceleration until approximately 5 km/h (3 mph).
  • The continuously variable transmission (CVT) air intake draws in 50 percent more air versus previous designs to reduce heat and the amount of water ingestion into the CVT system. The system will reduce belt slippage and improve durability.
  • A low- and high-speed forward gear offering:
    • Low range is 0 km/h to 47 km/h (0 mph to 29 mph), XUV835
    • Low range is 0 km/h to 24 km/h (0 mph to 15 mph), XUV865
    • High range is 0 km/h to 72 km/h (0 mph to 45 mph), XUV835
    • High range is 0 km/h to 51 km/h (0 mph to 32 mph), XUV865
  • Ability to creep along slowly to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Standard full-clutch enclosure with high speed fan provides longer belt and clutch life
  • High-ratio clutches with three cam weights for maximum belt-clamp load in high torque conditions

NOTE: Delivery and torque to the ground depends on tire size, which is a function of nominal size and pressure.

How the variable-speed drive works:

  1. As engine speed increases, the spring-loaded drive clutch is closed by weights being forced out by centrifugal force.
  2. As the drive clutch closes, the belt rides up to the largest diameter of the drive clutch and forces open the driven clutch.
  3. With the belt running in the smallest diameter of the driven clutch, the speed being transferred to the transaxle is increased.
  4. The driven clutch is designed to sense varying loads (inclines, mud, etc.) and constantly adjusts drive speed upward or downward so that engine rpm remains optimal.

Operator interface features:

  • On-demand true four-wheel drive (4WD) system with an auto-locking front differential and dash-mounted electronic rocker switch is best in class. When the rocker switch is in the on 4WD position, the front differential will automatically lock for extra traction when needed, but when the rocker switch is in the off two-wheel drive (2WD) position, the vehicle will remain in 2WD.
    • Provides exceptional traction in challenging conditions
    • Maintains turf-friendly operation in 2WD mode
    • Illuminated for visibility in low-light condition

Transaxle features:

  • Two-speed, fully-enclosed oil bath transaxle allows for superior pulling ability
  • Cast-aluminum design is the most robust in the industry
  • Helical forward and reverse gears are used for quiet operation
  • Rear traction assist (differential lock) is built in and can be engaged on demand
    • Allows locking the rear drive wheels together
    • Provides increased traction in tough spots

NOTE: Differential design reduces scuffing of the turf during turns because it allows the inside wheels to turn slower than the outside wheels.

  • Neutral start safety interlock for engine ignition system
  • Large, sealed bearings are located inside the housing for better protection and durability
  • Contains gear case for transferring power to the MFWD
  • Splined shaft interfaces for maximum torque transfer and durability
  • All drive gears machined from highest grade gear steel
  • Protected by a skid plate

MFWD features:

  • Electronic design is auto-locking for ease of use
    • Performs like a locking differential when engaged, but like an open differential when cornering
    • Offers positive engagement of both front wheels in forward and reverse as a differential package
    • Automatic engagement on the fly—no shift linkages required
    • Protected by a skid plate and frame

Drive shaft features:

  • Rear CV shaft diameter measures 27 mm (1.1 in.) and is designed for peak engine and braking torque
  • Front CV shaft diameter measures 23 mm (0.91 in.) and is designed for peak engine torque
  • Propshaft is designed for peak engine torque
  • All CV shaft and propshaft joints are maintenance free and protected by exclusive thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) boots for durability

This Gator™ XUV Crossover Utility Vehicle is equipped with power steering and a dual A-arm front suspension. These automotive-type systems exhibit excellent handling characteristics, as well as responsive steering and low steering effort:

  • Steel ball-bearings secure the steering shaft and deliver smooth, responsive operation
  • Completely sealed rack and pinion for long life
  • Low steering ratio (lock-to-lock) provides more responsive steering and less operator input
  • Shaft U-joints are phased for a smooth, uninterrupted motion of the steering wheel
  • Tilt steering wheel with XXXX in of travel
Electric power-assist steering system Electric power-assist steering system

Electric power-assist steering (EPAS) system has advanced features:

  • Anti-kickback feature reduces the amount of steering unwinding when traversing difficult terrain.
  • The system is speed-sensing and adjusts steering effort as the speed of the vehicle changes.
    • As speed increases, there is less steering assist for improved road feel.
    • As speed decreases, steering assist increases to give lower steering efforts for improved maneuverability.
  • A warning/functional light on the instrument panel provides self-diagnostics and a warning light in the situation of no assist.
  • Torque sensor measures steering wheel input so the on-board computer can provide the appropriate output for various driving situations.

With the EPAS system, the operator maintains a direct mechanical linkage from the steering wheel to the front wheels. The power steering system interfaces mechanically with the steering system by being inserted between the steering wheel and the rack-and-pinion assembly.

A differential torque sensor is integrated into the power steering assembly. The circuit board assembly is also integral with the power steering assembly.

Power steering does not reduce turning radius but significantly reduces steering effort by approximately 85 percent compared to models without power steering.

Regrets

1/5

After operating this for 1 year, I regret my purchase. Cons: Front end has been clunking for 11 months, and after 3 tries the dealer has not fixed it. After 3,000 miles, the brake pads are shot, and JD charges $330 just for the pads! During the first week of use, the wind caught the door, and the dealer charged $2,000+ to fix. It lacks power to drive in deep snow and mud, and the engine is extremely loud when pulling. After 2,500 miles, the belt jerks when starting into motion, and the belt measures 32mm (within specs). Suspension travel is too short. Pros: The windshield opens and has a washer. Switches are lighted, though too bright at night. Comfortable seat. Optional front and rear LEDs are good. Great heat and A/C. Tight cab. Tilt wheel.

Nice machine But.....

4/5

Wow what a great machine . The price is high but compared to others I guess its normal . Complaints 1 the machine is to low and bottoms out easy with shocks all the way up, 2 The blower should have a lower speed... blows a lot on 1 , 3 The seat should come in vinyl not just cloth . 4 the engine brake is a little slow on this compared to our 825 r . But it does go faster so it don't bother me , 5 the ac unit tubes are in wheel well with no protective shield on them ,Im afraid something is going to kick up an tear tubes off . Now the good The sound is 1/3 of what the 825r was its a lot quieter . 2 the AC is ice cold. can you say AWESOME . 3 the seat is nice with 3 seat belts . 4 Tons of room don't feel as cramped as 825r .5 the wiper stroke is a lot wider on windshield .6 the doors are awesome with windows roll up an down . I LOVE THIS Machine but the price is way to high but then again you get what you pay for. I don't regret this one bit . WE use the heck out of this machine. I know it will last for years Just a honest review from a country boy.

  • lots of room an ac ice cold

This is my 4th Gator

5/5

But first one with an enclosed cab. I was wondering if the HVAC was going to work - works great, gets cold fast, haven't used the heat yet. THe doors seal up completely and it is a lot quieter than my old gators. I've got the R model so I have the cloth interior and that is great. The additional leg room and space for 3rd person is alot better, my dog thanks you!

Pros

  • hvac

This product needs a REDESIGNed bed.

3/5

My biggest complaint with the 835r is that the tires are wider than the bed. Consequently, the tires are constantly throwing mud, snow, water, etc. all over the back of the cab, rear window, and cab door seal. It would be really nice John deere would design a fix for this and offer it to existing gator owners. Lord knows we paid for it at point of purchase!

Best I’ve ever had xuv835r

5/5

I’ve heard all the negative and can’t confirm any of it. Rides smooth, no wind noise. The unit is very impressive. Engine is vey smooth and well balanced. My complaints (if any) would be petty. Wouldn’t trade it for anything else on the market.

Love the heat and A/C

5/5

I have had this machine a year now. I added a snow blade which I have used in Iowa this winter. The machine works well. I wish it had power windows. Overall, I would recommend this XUV835R any day.

835r is a Great Machine, Better then I could have imagined

4/5

Really enjoy the great air conditioning and heat . The cab is very nice except have had a lot of adjustments to try and eliminate the wind noise. JD needs to figure out a better air cleaner design as I have replaced 4 in the last year. Have owned for exactly 1 year. Had two 825i before this and no problem !!! Fills up with dust real quick !!!

Great Machine

5/5

I’ve had my 835R for about 4 months and I absolutely love it. The factory installed cab far out performs all of the competition. I researched all of the competitors to make sure I wasn’t missing anything before I purchased the 835R. To be sure I drove a demo unit before I purchased. The HVAC system in the cab is fantastic and has an actual automotive style control for fan speed, air direction output and temperature. No other machine I looked at had this same style control. Some competitors have HVAC but require you to close and open multiple vents to get air where you need it. The AC is very cold. So cold in fact that even on warm days if you’re working in the machine you will want to change the temperature to blend a little warm air with the AC. Same with the heat. The heat will quickly and effectively warm the cab. Also gone are the days of steamed up windows on wet fall days. With the AC on and the air directed to defrost, your windows will never fog up. The fan is more than powerful enough to move air in the cabin and keep all the windows clear. The HVAC system serves another purpose and that is to pressurize the cab. When I’m not using my Gator for work I will take it on the trail. Some trails can prove to be dusty and even with the cab on my 825 I would find sand had crept in and settle on your clothes etc. With the windows closed and the HVAC system on the air pressure is positive inside the 835R and the dirt is driven away and kept out of the cab. You will still get some dust in very dry dusty environments but nothing major. With a cloth headliner, cloth seats and sun visors this Gator is quiet and comfortable. The build quality on my machine is excellent. I have had no problems with the door seals, engine or any components. The only drawback is the width. The 835R is 69” wide. Wide for some trails with 65” limits. I find the trade off is worth it however since I use the machine primarily for work around the ranch.

Pros

  • large roomy interior
  • plenty of leg and storage room in the cab
  • power dump bed
  • plenty of power
  • quieter than the previous gators
  • hvac system is perfect

Cons

  • width of 835r with cab is 69” wide for trails

Deere needs to work out the bugs

2/5

At first glance my 835r is a nice looking machine the trouble begins with the build quality. From the moment it was delivered there was wind noise around each door. After several adjustments it was decided the doors are too flimsy to hold a seal at the top of each side. One of the first things that happened was the window regulator crank fell off the right side within 30 minutes of taking delivery. The installation of turn signals additional lights and radio should be pretty straight-forward with the already installed wiring harnesses. Although the wiring harnesses sound like a good idea the cab has to be practically disassemble to find the ends do use. All of the instructions that came with any of the add-on accessories are worthless since none of them have been written for the 835r. The instructions only have value for the 8:25 and the components don't resemble one another. Before buying one of these Gators you should consider very carefully waiting until Deere gets their act together.

Pros

  • nice looks

Cons

  • not ready for the market
  • wiring harness is a nightmare
  • fit and finish leave a lot to be desired

Very good

4/5

Have wore out two drive shafts in the six years that I have owned my 825i gator. Very costly to replace. I think it needs to be a lot stronger. Other than that, the only other thing is that it is very hard to change the oil. Hopefully they have made some improvements in the last 6 years. They are really fun to have around the farm.

Pros

  • strong

Cons

  • expensive
