Deep deck design
Deep, flat-top deck Deep, flat-top deck
Deep-deck mower design Deep-deck mower design

The mower deck has a deep-deck design:

  • Constructed from heavy, 9-gauge, 0.15-in. (3.8-mm) steel.
    • Minimizes the number of welds required
    • Has a smooth underside for reduced material buildup
  • Deep-deck design delivers excellent airflow, so large volumes of material can be processed quickly and efficiently.
  • A wider and higher discharge opening provides even clipping dispersal for an excellent finished appearance in all conditions.
  • A durable, plastic deflector spreads grass clippings evenly across the lawn, is hinged, and can be raised to minimize the storage space required.
  • 1-in. (25.4-mm) cold-forged spindles are heat-treated for strength and are supported by ball bearings.
  • Standard front rollers and two double-captured wheels provide a more even mowing job and reduce the chance of scalping.
    • Adjustable for different mowing heights
  • The front edge is raised above the blade plane to allow for even cutting of tall grass.
  • Blade overlap is greater than many conventional decks for a clean cut.
  • The mower can side-discharge, mulch, or collect material, except a Z740R equipped with Tweel tires is not compatible with a material collection system.
Mower level adjustment Mower level adjustment
  • Deck leveling and rake angle adjustment is provided at all four mower mounting points.

Trim side of mower reinforcement/wear bar Trim side of mower reinforcement/wear bar

Steel reinforcing bars are welded to the front edge and trim side of the mower deck:

  • Strengthens the deck to reduce chance of damage from obstructions
  • Increased material thickness for longer life of the deck
Superior durability is designed in
Deep mower deck spindle pocket Deep mower deck spindle pocket
Flip-up spindle cover Flip-up spindle cover

The deck has deep, strong spindle pockets to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough operation:

  • Ribs formed in the deck shell add strength where it is needed.
  • The aluminum spindle housing has 8-in. (20-cm) base for extra strength.

Flip-up spindle covers make cleaning the spindle area convenient.

Wheels and rollers

Left mower anti-scalp wheel Left mower anti-scalp wheel

Dual-captured front and side anti-scalp wheels:

  • Give a more even mowing job and reduce the chance of scalping
  • Adjustable for different mowing heights
Step weldment
Operator step welded on mower deck Operator step welded on mower deck

A permanent step weldment is located at the left front corner of the mower deck:

  • Encourages proper entry to the operator station
  • Provides a good gripping surface for the operator’s foot
Optional MulchControl™ attachment

The MulchControl attachment makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material.

Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer use
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings
How MulchControl works
Illustration of MulchControl baffle open Illustration of MulchControl baffle open
Illustration of MulchControl baffle closed Illustration of MulchControl baffle closed

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
    • The left mower blade area is completely enclosed and optimized for mulching and will mulch even when the mower is in the side-discharge mode.
    • Baffles around the center and right blades are optimized for mulching when the discharge baffle is closed.
  • The attachment also includes mulching blades.
MulchControl handle is used to control baffle
MulchControl baffle closed MulchControl baffle closed
MulchControl handle in closed position MulchControl handle in closed position

The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle:

  • The operator is required to get off the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • MulchControl is well suited to the following mowing situations:
    • Operators who usually mulch, but side-discharge when grass gets too long
    • Operators who usually side discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
    • Operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
    • Operators who bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side-discharge or bagging when needed.

MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired
Compatibility

MulchControl is a field-installed attachment and compatible with the 48-in. (122-cm), 54-in. (137-cm), and 60-in. (152-cm) HC PRO Mower Decks available for the Z700 Series ZTrak Mowers.

6.5-bu (230-L) rear hopper, chute, attachment bar, and blower 6.5-bu (230-L) rear hopper, chute, attachment bar, and blower

The 6.5-bu (230-L) rear bagger efficiently collects material from a 48-, 54-, or 60-in. (122-, 137-, or 152-cm) Mower Deck:

  • Hopper, attachment bar/bumper, Power Flow™ blower, and chute components are ordered separately to make a complete MCS.
  • A weight bracket and four 18-lb (8.2-kg) weights are included for installation on the front of the vehicle to help counterbalance the weight of the hopper. For proper ballast with complete MCS:
    • Four weights are required on a ZTrak Z700 Series equipped with a 48-in. (122-cm) Mower Deck.
    • Three weights are required on a ZTrak Z700 Series equipped with a 54-in. (137-cm) Mower Deck.
    • Two weights are required on a ZTrak Z700 Series equipped with a 60-in. (152-cm) Mower Deck.

Removing bag from 6.5-bu (230-L) hopper Removing bag from 6.5-bu (230-L) hopper

The hopper design provides efficient bagging performance, clean operation, and easy-to-empty bags:

  • Two durable bags give a generous, 6.5-bu (230-L) capacity.
  • The bags lift out for easy emptying.
  • An efficient chute provides a smooth flow of material to reduce the chance of plugging.
    • The chute and Power Flow blower must be ordered separately.
  • Standard mower blades are used for bagging.
  • The air exhaust duct directs air from the hopper back and toward the ground for clean operation.
  • Convenient latch makes opening and closing the hopper easy.

NOTE: Appropriate hopper, Power Flow blower, chute, and attachment bar are required and ordered separately.

The spacious operator station has been designed for comfort, visibility, and ease of use:

  • Getting on and off is easy with the flat operator platform.
  • Convenient-to-use controls are located close to the operator.
  • Operator controls are color coded and designed for easy identification and operation.

The ROPS and seat belt work in conjunction to provide a protective zone around the operator:

  • It reduces the operator’s risk of being crushed under the vehicle should it overturn.
  • In most situations, the ROPS limits the overturn to little more than 90 degrees.
  • When used with a seatbelt, the ROPS is very effective in preventing deaths and serious injuries.
    • Use of the seat belt is recommended when operating with ROPS in the upright position.

  • Excellent curb climbing is possible due to the Michelin X Tweel Turf construction and flexibility.
  • More consistent cut quality is achieved because inconsistent tire pressure is eliminated.
  • Uptime is improved.
    • The exclusive technology eliminates downtime and associated cost due to flat or damaged tires.
    • Punctures and sidewall damage no longer result in downtime.
  • Cost of operation is reduced.
    • Cost of repairs and maintenance is reduced.
    • One single unit replaces the current tire, wheel, and valve assembly.
    • There is no need for complex tire-mounting equipment.
    • No need to spend time checking and optimizing tire pressure.
    • The need to purchase and stock plug kits and spare tires is eliminated.
    • The tire tread will last up to three times longer than current pneumatic tires because automotive-grade rubber is used for the tread.

Every owner of a John riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials including firewood, lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

NOTE: For proper braking and operation, the loaded weight of the cart should never exceed the weight of the tractor, or other towing unit, plus the operator. The loaded weight of any equipment towed by an EZtrak™ or ZTrak™ mower should not exceed 250 lb (113.4 kg). See the appropriate vehicle pages for the weight of the vehicle and the mower deck.

7P Poly Utility Cart7P Poly Utility Cart
  • The cart has a premium molded, high-density polyethylene box construction.
  • Compression molding process allows polyethylene to be the optimum thickness in all areas for superior strength and durability.
  • Polyethylene body will not rust or dent; it stays looking new longer.
  • 0.75-in. (2-cm) x 2-in. (5-cm) stake pockets are molded in to make the addition of side extensions easy.
  • Two vertical 0.75-in. (2-cm) molded channels on each side allow easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
  • Ribs in the box bottom add strength and prevent the shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
  • Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; there is no tailgate to loosen or remove.
  • Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment.
  • Pneumatic tires provide turf tread for good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance.

  • Will not dent or rust

Four weights are included. For proper ballast with a complete material collection system, the number of weights required to be installed on the machine depends on the mower deck size as follows:

  • 48-in. (122-cm) mower deck requires four weights
  • 54-in. (137-cm) mower deck requires three weights
  • 60-in. (152-cm) mower deck requires two weights

The appropriate Power Flow™ blower, chute, and attachment bar/bumper are sold separately and are required for installation of a complete material collection system.

6.5-bu (229-L) rear bagger (attachment bar/bumper, chute, and blower must be ordered separately)6.5-bu (229-L) rear bagger (attachment bar/bumper, chute, and blower must be ordered separately)

The 6.5-bu (229-L) rear bagger efficiently collects material from the mower deck:

  • A Power Flow blower (ordered separately) on the end of the mower deck moves material up the chute (ordered separately) and into the hopper.
  • A weight bracket and four 18-lb (8.2-kg) weights are included for installation on the front of the vehicle to help counterbalance the weight of the hopper.

The hopper design provides efficient bagging performance, clean operation, and easy-to-empty bags:

  • Two durable bags give a generous 6.5-bu (229-L) capacity.
  • The bags lift out for easy emptying.
  • Efficient chute provides a smooth flow of material to reduce the chance of plugging.
    • The chute and Power Flow blower must be ordered separately.
  • Standard mower blades are used for bagging.
  • Air exhaust duct directs air from the hopper back and toward the ground for clean operation.
  • Convenient latch makes opening and closing the hopper easy.

NOTE: Appropriate Power Flow blower, chute, and attachment bar are required (ordered separately).

Mulch Kits

MulchControl advantages and benefits
ZTrak™ Z730M mowingZTrak™ Z730M mowing

The MulchControl attachment makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer use
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings
How MulchControl works

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
    • The left mower blade area is completely enclosed and optimized for mulching, thus will mulch even when the mower is in the side-discharge mode.
    • Baffles around the center and right blades are optimized for mulching when the discharge baffle is closed.
MulchControl handle in mulch-off positionMulchControl handle in mulch-off position
MulchControl baffle openMulchControl baffle open
  • The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
    • The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • Changing from mulching to side discharge or vice versa takes only a few seconds.
MulchControl handle in mulch-on positionMulchControl handle in mulch-on position
MulchControl baffle closedMulchControl baffle closed

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

  • Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • Usually side discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
  • Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharge or bagging when needed.

Very impressed

5/5

Update! I recently did a one star review but it should be a five. Please feel free to remove my one star review. Just got my new mower back from the dealer. They did a great job fixing it. I had a chance today to cut with it and I am impressed. Lawn looked like a carpet when I was done mowing. I like that the discharge opening is very large, no grass clumps at all. Clippings are evenly dispersed. Mower had plenty of power. Never had tweels before but after using them they held the hills where I normally slide and they didn’t tear up the grass at all. I would definitely recommend.

Not impressed, new mower with engine problems

1/5

Was sold a mower with carb issues. Didn’t even get a chance to cut grass with it. Kind of sad when you buy a new mower that has to be returned to the dealer an hour (drive time) right after you just picked it up for warranty work. Right now reliability is a zero. Not impressed.

As Advertised!

5/5

I bought my Z740R with tweels in May '23. The dealer assured me it could handle the 6 acres of rough hills, banks and trails that I had previously mowed with my 1025R and 60"mmm. I am pleasantly surprised by the performance. The only issue has been with the drive belt tensioner on my rough ground. At 62 hours the unit quit pulling and upon examination I found the drive belt had come off of one hydro pulley. After replacing the belt I discovered the tensioner was in the release position. When this happened I do not know. It may have operated loose until the belt was too worn to stay on. I replaced the belt at my expense since the dealer said this wasn't a warranty item. I added a failsafe to the tensioner and much to my suprise the unit operates better than when delivered. My guess is the tensioner released from being jarred on my rough ground.

Loving it

5/5

I bought this close to a month ago and am really enjoying it. I have cut my mowing time down by over an hour if not close to 2 hours. The seat makes the ride comfortable even on my rough terrain. Have added the tool box kit and rear bumper. Made a form of a drop hitch out of a 4" x 4" piece of angle iron in order to utilize my grass sweeper better keeping it more level and not dragging on the ground.

5/5

Replaced my JD425 that I had for 20 yrs with this zero turn. I have cut my lawn mowing time by over an hour and close to two. The ride is smoother with the floating type set than my JD425. Bought a tool box kit and a rear bumper kit for the zero turn. Having to build a form of a drop hitch for it so I can use my sweeper.

So Far Meets and Exceeds Expectations

5/5

I bought this a month ago and am still learning how to operate it effectively on our 3 acre "lawn". Was the last one in stock at my dealership and it came with tweels. My sales rep there assured me I'd like the traction and stability that comes with tweels and so far it has lived up to my expectations and even survived a few bumps while my wife was learning to use it!

I purchased my z740r new in central illinois 2021 it has spent more time in the shop with more issues than anything I have ever owned. June 2024 and it has 49 hours on it and still misfires . Shop has done great trying but it’s just a lemon in green paint.

This was sold to me as an entry level commercial mower to use in my landscaping business. While I like the mower in general, it is grossly under powered for commercial use. For the price, JD should have offered a better package for zero turn mowers.

LEMON

1/5

I purchased this machine because the one I have has been excellent. The 1st time the new machine was used it shut down after30-45 minutes. The machine now has 2 hours. I called dealer, they picked it up 3 days later. A week after that they say that they can't recreate the problem and don't know what to do. I told them that it should be replaced or refunded because it is a lemon. Now it is in discussion between repair shop and sales. What do I have to do to get one that works? John Deere needs to step up and take care of the problem

After mowing with the Z740R with tweels it is the best ztr I have ever used. Ride is amazing and the cut quality is great. This was a huge upgrade from my previous Deere ZTR. I would recommend this mower to anyone who has acreage they mow. It is everything I wanted and more in a new mower.

Experience was really good for the purchasing of my new equipment. Delivery was not as good as I would have hoped for. Was rushed through picking up the equipment. Equipment didn't steer correctly and fixed on my own at home even though it was brought up before loading on my trailer. Tank was not full on the fuel, had 1/4 tank when was told it was going to be full of fuel and ready to go. Salesman told me he would give me a hat but that was not provided, I am a hat guy. Want to represent the equipment I just purchased and did not receive that and asked. Over all the purchase was easy and smooth, would definitely like to see better delivery.

Under powered

3/5

Last year was my first season using it, did approximately 25 cuts with it on 5 acres of lawn. Great mower, well-built but under powered. Stock tires it came with don't hold air very well and if you don't check them before every mow, you will stripe your lawn, and that ticks you off. The dealer put an aftermarket bagger on it for me, works great but the underpowered motor almost stalls trying to engage it (which can be embarrassing when bragging to your neighbor about your brand new16K mower that dies). Anyways it is a well-built machine and fun to ride, but it definitely needs more power for that price Mr. John Deere

I purchased the Z740R summer of 2023. I've already put almost 50 hrs on the machine. It has been a pleasure to mow with. I have been mowing 8 acres a week with a compact tractor for several years and decided to get into the zero turn mowers. Wow! What a difference and much more efficient. I've owned several John Deere equipment and I enjoy the dependability and ruggedness. Looking forward to spring again.

Super fast

4/5

I bought this mower about 7 months ago and it’s great except two things. One it doesn’t have an e-brake which is usually not an issue but I use it commercially and it would be nice for when I’m traveling with it. And two and most importantly it’s much heavier than the 5 series. Like 1000 lbs heavier. I notice a difference in mileage while towing to accounts and it puts tire marks in damp lawns that the 5 series doesn’t do. It’s much faster and dry lawns look noticeably better after mowed then the 5 but I wish it wasn’t so heavy.

Upgraded from a Ztrak 525 and wish I’d done it sooner. Not only is the ride more comfortable it takes half the time to mow my yard. Used to take 3.5 hours, now it is 1.6. The smoother ride means I don’t have to slow down as often. And a big bonus is I use less gas to mow the yard.

A Time Saver

5/5

I bought the mower last spring and used it this past mowing season. It is the best riding mower I have ever owned. The maneuverability is outstanding. It cut my mowing time for the lawn, building site, and grove nearly in half. It's faster road speed and increased power has make it useful for mowing field entrances. I debated whether or not the Tweel feature was worth the added cost of the mower until I ran over a bent bolt that pierced the tire and one of the tweel spokes. I pulled the bolt out and kept on mowing. I am the township clerk for our township. We purchased a similar ZTrak for mowing the cemeteries a few years ato and have been very happy with the ruggedness of the mower as well as the quality if the cut in such a public place.

Best Mower I Ever Bought

5/5

I bought our Z740R - ZTrak three years ago in 2020. I've owned smaller John Deere mowers but they couldn't last with as much mowing as we've done (2 acres here + mother-in-law's 2 acres). Even so, the other brands we've owned don't hold a candle to John Deere. Our land is rough on mowers and the decks didn't last long until we switched to JD. After three years owning the ZTrak, the mower operates the same as when it was new. Even the battery still works like new. If you're hard on mowers like we are, I highly recommend getting this or higher rated models. You get what you pay for!

Smooth ride and awesome cut!

5/5

This is my first summer mowing with a ZTR (I've mowed with tractors for 20+ years). I bought the Z740R after test driving several models including competing brands. I can't say enough about this machine. It is so comfortable to ride and better on my lower back and legs, and it cuts so good even when mulching at full speed. I highly recommend the mulching kit. Most homeowners on my street are tractor owners (some really nice tractors), but none leave the lawn looking as nice as mine. No visible grass clippings even when chopping 2" off the top! It's amazing. I love mowing my lawn again.

Z915E Upgrade

5/5

Previously owned a Z915E with a 54 inch deck. I bought this mower over the winter and couldn't wait to use it. It did not disappoint. Between the ride being so much smoother and the extra 6 inches of deck, I have cut my mowing time down by 20 minutes an acre. I have the tweels on mine and have not got it stuck yet. Last year I had to pull my Z915E out of the mud at least a half dozen times.

Power and Smooth Ride

5/5

We bought this mower 9 months ago and have been more than satisfied with it. Our property consists of 5 acres of grass that need to be cut once a week during the growing season. Certain portions of the property are very bumpy. The main selling point for the Z740R was the adjustable seat and it is fantastic! Our previous mower was an older ZTrac with a standard non-hydraulic seat. The bumpy nature of our property meant some wild rides and sore backs with that mower. No longer! The Z740R also has more power resulting in faster mowing times.

Good mower but think I got a lemon

3/5

I bought this mower the spring of 2021, it is a great machine but have had some engine trouble. It's been in the shop 3 times for an engine miss. First 2 times they said it was a faulty ignition coil and the last time they said it was caused by some metal shavings in the carb from when they machined the carb at factory. I mowed with it when I got it back and it still had some misfiring issues. For the amount I paid for it, it should run flawless instead of sitting at dealership waiting on repairs for 4 months. John deere please make this right, this is the 2nd zero turn I have bought in the last 3 years.

This is the mower you need!

5/5

I purchased this mower after using a 2R series tractor with a 72" MMM for a year and hating the many issues, plus scalping and cut quality being less than expected. While I downgraded on the deck size I absolutely love this machine and recommend it to anyone looking for a high end zero turn or considering a tractor with MMM. While it was nice to have one machine for everything, the ride comfort and maneuverability make this mower worth it. I was initially concerned about the engine only having 23.5 HP, but a demo at my dealer resolved that - the engine is powerful enough to handle hills and thick grass at the same time while maintaining speed. My mow time for 5 acres (with slopes, hills and lots of trees) was 2.5-3 hours with my tractor depending on conditions. Mow time with the Z740R averages 2.5 hours but with almost no trimming needed afterwards. I immediately noticed a huge difference in cut quality and almost no scalping now. Overall, an expensive but awesome machine!

Quick work of a big job

5/5

I mow 4-5 acres around my farm house, and to have this 5 foot mowing deck is a dream come true. What used to take 4 hours to mow now takes 1.5 hours. Kohler engine is great at 23 horse power for this size mower. The seat is amazing…John Deere pretty much attached a lazy boy chair on this machine. I would recommend adding the jack to the front of the mower if you do not have a safe way to raise the front of the mower…huge time saver and makes getting to the blades so much easier. You won’t regret purchasing this machine!

OUTSTANDING ZERO TURN

5/5

I bought this zero turn about 2 months ago, and do not regret it at all! From the options to the cut, just quality! I bought the 54” deck mated to that sweet Kawasaki engine, also added the Twheelz, and in my opinion, it’s the best setup for this size of zero turn. Cuts the grass like a hot knife through butter, even through the tall grass I had no issue and had plenty of power. You will not regret buying this mower!

Great mower!

4/5

I bought the 740r in 2019. I love the mower, it easy to use and has plenty of power. The only two draw backs I have is the cutting height and mulch kit. The deck only goes down to 1.5". My old ztrack cut lower than that. The mulch kit is complete JUNK!!! I had parts of this kit replaced three times and the door on the kit still wouldn't stay shut. After the 3rd attempt Deere gave me my money back. The only thing I see that needs to be a option is the 7 iron deck. But very satisfied so far.

Heavy duty, but not overkill

5/5

I've owned my Z740R/60" for about 6 months now and have approximately 35 hours on it. So far, this mower far exceeds my expectations. I was a little concerned about the power with the 23.5hp engine on the 60" deck, but it proves to be more than capable when mowing conditions are heavy. In super heavy conditions, it does struggle slightly, but not more than I would expect from higher HP machines. The Kawasaki engine recovery is excellent. Very impressed with the deck build. After 35 hours of fairly harsh mowing, I expected there to be more buildup in the deck than there was. The discharge is excellent and the deck efficiently moves product out. It also mows on inclines very well too, which was a concern I had. The Tweels really stick to the ground well I don't feel as if I'm slipping like I used to with my Z655 I had previously. If I've got one complaint about the Z740R, it's the lack of ComfortGlide on the seat. The suspension seat is fantastic, but I do feel like the ride quality could be exponentially better if the side would oscillate back and forth like the ComfortGlide allows on the Z900 series. Other than that, very happy with the purchase for the money. I've really put this mower through the ringer and it continues to provide an excellent cut quality and experience. Would highly recommend one if you're looking for a heavier than residential mower.

Pros

  • michelin tweels
  • suspension seat
  • integrated parking brakes
  • no-flat front tires
  • high capacity deck
  • kawsaki commercial engine

Cons

  • no comfortglide on seat

Very pleased with my purchase

5/5

Since purchasing this new model zero-turn from John Deere, I've been high pleased with the 740R. We mow about 4 1/2 acres of rolling, hillside lawn with numerous outcrops of rocks. The 54" deck was a good choice for this environment and the mower is as stable as I had hoped it would be. The quality of the machine is very good and I fully expect to get 15-20 years of service from this mower. I did the first (break-in) oil change today and did not even need a wrench. The engineering that went into the 740R is well-thought-out and owner-friendly. I especially like the heavy-duty spindles and easy to grease zerk fittings. The flip-up spindle covers and foot-rest deck make it super easy to blow out grass debris at the end of mowing. The engine is powerful, easy to crank, and well-built. I really like the deck, which is built like a battleship. It mows level and thoroughly. My favorite thing about this mower, however, is the heavy-duty suspension seat (adjustable to your specific weight). The engineers were "spot-on" when they designed this seat. The 740R is comfortable, solid, reliable (so far), and I'm glad I bought it.

Pros

  • ride comfort
  • heavy duty "pro" deck features
  • ease of maintenance

Cons

  • none so far

Z740R is a game changer

5/5

My old John Deere rider was 24 years before I retired it to get a new one with a bigger deck to handle the 3 acres we moved to. The Z740R was quick to hit the top of my list. I upgraded to the Tweels, which was a great choice, and added the LED light kit which puts out as much light as my F250. I've mowed 3 times in the last 10 days with the new JD and all I can say is it's a fantastic machine. The Kawasaki engine is a great match with more than enough power to move the mower at a quick pace & drive the deck with power to spare. My first mowing was a thick, 10" inch high, post rain growth and it handled it with ease. It's fast, easy to operate, and built tough...plenty tough for my property and my needs. The deck height adjust system is a dial that's easy to get to without having to bend over like the other brands require with the peg in a hole system. And the build quality looks like it will last forever. The seat is awesome. For the first time in years I don't feel beat up when I'm finished mowing and can actually walk upright to the house after putting the rig away in the workshop. Instead of the usual 3.5 hours, it's now taking me 1 hr 15 min to mow! And this time of year the bahiagrass is growing so fast I'm mowing every 4 days so the time saved adds up. From checking the fuel gauge it's looking like I'm using approx a gallon per hour so that should give me at least 6 mows per tank, maybe a bit more. The Z740R is a new model for 2019 and It definitely fills the gap between the smaller machines and the larger 900 series zero turns, and meets the needs of an acreage mower without having to go full on commercial and spend another $5 grand or more. The Z740R is well thought out, well designed, well engineered, and IMHO another great John Deere product. If your comparison shopping, cut to the chase and just get one. You'll thank me later. And definitely get the Tweels & LED light kit!

Pros

  • well built
  • well laid out controls
  • fast & powerful

Fantastic mower ! ! !

5/5

Easy handling, kick butt speed, comfortable, non-bone jarring seat. It cut my mowing time from 4+ hours to 1.5 hours with the ability to get around all the obstacles in our 5 acre yard. It handled the tall grass with ease at higher speeds than our yellow mower (not sure if name brands are allowed) could handle when it was new at much slower speeds. Right now, I am one happy customer.
