Deep deck design
Deep, flat-top deck (front view) Deep, flat-top deck (front view)
Deep, flat-top deck (left front view) Deep, flat-top deck (left front view)

The mower deck has a deep-deck design:

  • Constructed from heavy, 9-gauge, 0.15-in. (3.8-mm) steel
    • Minimizes the number of welds required
    • Has a smooth underside for reduced material buildup
  • Deep-deck design delivers excellent airflow so large volumes of material can be processed quickly and efficiently.
  • A wider and higher discharge opening provides even clipping dispersal for an excellent finished appearance in all conditions.
  • A durable, plastic deflector spreads grass clippings evenly across the lawn, is hinged, and can be raised to minimize the storage space required.
  • 1-in. (25.4-mm) cold-forged spindles are heat-treated for strength and are supported by ball bearings.
  • Standard front rollers and two double-captured wheels provide a more even mowing job and reduce the chance of scalping.
    • Adjustable for different mowing heights
  • The front edge is raised above the blade plane to allow for even cutting of tall grass.
  • Blade overlap is greater than many conventional decks for a clean cut.
  • The mower can side-discharge, mulch, or collect material.

  • Increased material thickness for longer deck life
Superior durability is designed in
Deep mower deck spindle pocket with flip-up spindle cover Deep mower deck spindle pocket with flip-up spindle cover

The deck has deep, strong spindle pockets to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough operation:

  • Ribs formed in the deck shell add strength where needed.
  • The aluminum spindle housing has an 8-in. (20-cm) base for extra strength.

Flip-up spindle covers make cleaning the spindle area convenient.

Wheels and rollers
Right and left mower anti-scalp wheel and center rollers Right and left mower anti-scalp wheel and center rollers

Dual-captured side anti-scalp wheels and front rollers:

  • Give a more even mowing job and reduce the chance of scalping
  • Wheels are adjustable for different mowing heights
MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one-third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired
Optional MulchControl™ attachment
MulchControl with baffle closed MulchControl with baffle closed
MulchControl with baffle open MulchControl with baffle open

The MulchControl attachment makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer required
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
  • Mulching blades to give a more complete mulching job are included.
  • The left mower blade area is completely enclosed and optimized for mulching and will mulch even when the mower is in the side-discharge mode.
  • Baffles around the center and right blades are optimized for mulching when the discharge baffle is closed.
  • A MulchControl kit is not available for 48HC mower decks.
MulchControl operation
MulchControl handle (standard with MulchControl) MulchControl handle (standard with MulchControl)

The optional MulchControl attachment comes with a handle on top of the mower deck that is used to open and close the discharge baffle:

  • The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • Changing from mulching to side discharge or vice versa with the hand lever takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

  • Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • Usually side discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
  • Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side-discharge or bagging when needed.

Great Mower

5/5

I bought this machine about 14 months ago. Ordered on line took a couple months to get but it came in earlier than promised. Have used to cut 2+ acres, does a great job! Researched for about 3 month before deciding on the Z545R I love the EFI it starts first time every time!

Commercial quality

5/5

Spent 3 months researching reviewing zero turn mowers. Bought the z545r based on its class exclusive features and good looks. Mowed with it last night and was blown away by its performance. It actually rides smoother than the x350 it replaced and it powers through tall heavy grass like nothing. Also some people say you can’t mow hills with a zero turn…..apparently they don’t have a John Deere. Go slow and steady on the steep stuff and you’ll be fine

Awesome mower

5/5

Super comfortable and does an amazing job cutting / spreading clipping with discharge down. My old mower went down and grass was very tall. (Probably 8-10 inches and taller in other places) Mowed one time at 3 inches and you’d never know it had gotten that tall. It processes the grass amazing. Couldn’t be happier with the power and the low fuel consumption of the EFI. In my mind this is a great value for what your getting.

Finally updated zero turn.

5/5

Z545 zero turn got delivered from Bodensteiner Implement Co - Decorah last Friday. I'm replacing a 2008 Z445 with this mower. It took around 3 months to come in the dealer did warn it would be few months. Mowed one time with it and real happy so far. Only bummer is dealer said it would have Kawasaki engine but came with Briggs. Since 2008 I have been real happy with John Deere zero turn mowers.

Z545R - ZTrack Review

5/5

I bought this lawnmower two weeks ago from Everglades Equipment Group in Fort Myers. I had been reading reviews on zero turn mowers for about two months. I found this mower to have the most features for the money plus everyone was raving about how well it cuts. I have one acre of land and it has cut my mowing time from 1.5 hours to 50 minutes. I have used it twice and still have half a tank of gas. It sips gas.

Love my 545!

5/5

I had a Z445 that I purchased in 2010. It was my first zero turn and the machine gave me 11 trouble free seasons of mowing. So for my 60th birthday this April, I decided to treat myself to a new Z545R. needless to say, it is the best birthday present I bought myself!!! I am very pleased with the unit! It feels wonderful, the cut is John Deere terrific as usual!! The features of the mower are great! Love the operators display, gas gauge, and the EFI is terrific! I am very pleased with sticking with another JD, How about a pushbutton start for the next model? Thank You JD for making such a great mower and looking forward to another 11 + years of mowing, Geez, that would make me 71! ouch!!

Great mower except for steering

3/5

If the dealer would have adjusted the steering when doing setup I would rate higher. It would creep in neutral to the right forward and when reversing if sticks pulled equally always goes left as in right wheels appear to go twice as fast. they adjusted the neutral but said it is normal for them to go faster on one drive if adjusted to go straight with sticks equal. I had another brand and it goes straight forward and backward.

All around a great mower

5/5

I shopped for quite sometime before I finally decided to buy a new "zero" turn style mower. I researched all the major brands like most of you reading this review probably have. What made me arrive at buying the Z545R are a few details. First, I have a 1997 John Deere 755 that I still use regularly on my acreage. Matter of fact, that was my mower until I bought the Z545R. Longevity and build quality are apparent. I have almost 1,000 hours on that tractor and it's still going strong. 2nd detail is I liked that idea that the Z545R has fuel injection. EFI is going to be more efficient than a carburetored engine. I didn't think I would like the push button throttle at first, but once I started to use the mower I love it and it makes total sense with EFI. 3rd detail is the little things that turn out to be huge things. The comfy seat, the ease of getting the deck leveled, etc make the Z545R a real treat to own.

Solid Zero Turn for the price

5/5

Purchased 2 of these units for a lawn service company ran by my brothers and I. John Deere did a great job with the Z545R. They are very comfortable to run for extended periods of time with the glide seat and the Briggs EFI engine has plenty of power and is very efficient with fuel consumption. Deere also did a wonderful job putting many nice features on this mower like the lights, the nice screen with the fuel gauge and the selling point for us, which was the ROPS bar. Very well equipped machines for the price point. Both units have nearly 50 hours of commercial lawn mowing on them including rough farm yards and both have ran very well with no break downs. They also have a good clean cut quality. Overall these are solid mowers that are very well equipped and priced very well. Very happy with the job Deere did on these and will continue to be a Deere customer if they keep it up.

The Cadillac of Zero Turn Mowers

5/5

I broke my Z545R in today on a 2+ acre tract and was pleasantly surprised to see my mow time go from just under 3 hours to 2, thanks to the 60in deck - an upgrade from a 54. The seat design and foot pegs made the ride comfortable and enjoyable. Great job by JD Engineering. LED lighting galore. Love the LED fuel gauge, rpm indicator, etc. Love the EFI and not having to choke to start. JD has taken several steps in the right direction with this product. The maintenance on these machines is a breeze. Do yourself a favor and keep the deck clean after use with a leaf blower. Use fuel stabilizer routinely.

Outstanding mower

5/5

Love this thing! Although it's considered a residential unit, it has all the qualities of a commercial zero turn. Features are easy to use, even for my wife, and she's a petite lady. The deck lowering mechanism was definitely designed or inspired by someone who cut a lot of gas. It is a common sense, yet unique design. The only down side for John Deere is that I'm almost 50 years old, and this may well be the last mower I'll ever have to purchase. If you're considering a well built zero turn with commercial quality, look no further, this one is it!

I bought it online at the beginning of the year and it has been awesome. It has cut my mowing time in half. It started to have issues when turning by choking itself out but the implement company came to get the next day to figure it out. Other then that I love it and it's a comfortable ride.

Comfort and convenience cadillac of mowers

5/5

Bought about 2 months ago read some reviews and people said that it's not very good on hills but I disagree unless u have a 11/12 pitch hill I don't think you'll have any problems and its fast if you have a smooth yard and great on gas!!!

More than anticipated

5/5

Have used twice. Still getting use to a zero turn, but will get there. Using the Econo setting for speed, has plenty of power. The mow quality is the best we have ever had. Yard looks like carpet. Doing almost 3 acres counting road ditch are. We also have 2 X300 units. Very impressed and pleased so far!

New to zero turn

5/5

I've mowed twice and this mower is both comfortable and powerful. I'm still a little jerky driving it but that'll change after a couple outings.

GREAT MOWER

5/5

BOUGHT THIS MOWER FROM MY LOCAL DEALER. ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE MOWER AND THE POWER BEHIND IT. CUTS GREAT THE EFI IS NICE IT STARTS UP WITHOUT HAVING TO TOUCH A CHOKE OR ANYTHING. I BOUGHT THIS ONE OVER THE Z530R BECAUSE I WANTED EFI. I WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE BRIGGS ENGINE BUT SEEMS TO BE PRETTY GOOD. THE ONLY THING I WOULD RECOMMEND IS GOING WITH THE 54" DECK OVER THE 48". WITH THE 48" DECK YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO CUT BACK OVER YOUR TIRE TRACKS AND WITH A 54" YOU CAN STICK OUT A LITTLE BUT WITH PROPERTIES BEING SMALLER I CAN SEE WHY 48" ARE MADE. I AM THINKING ABOUT SELLING MY DECK FOR A 54" THOUGH AS I HAVE THE BIGGER PROPERTY TO USE A 54" OVERALL VERY PLEASED AND LOOK FORWARD TO MANY MORE HRS ON MY MOWER.
