Features

Spend more time working and less time switching equipment with easy implement swaps

Drive-over deck makes connection simple Drive-over deck makes connection simple

1 Family Tractors are designed to minimize the time and effort needed to switch-out implements to accommodate different jobs.

  • AutoConnect Deck System: Connect a mid-mount mower deck to the tractor in less than 60 seconds without leaving the seat except to lock the gauge wheels.
    • Load-N-Go attachment: Easily move your 54D or 60D AutoConnect Deck with your John Deere Loader after it has been disconnected from the tractor with the Load-N-Go ramps.
  • Quik-Park™ Loader System: 120R Quik-Park™ Loaders are designed for easy mounting and removal in about a minute, with no tools needed.
  • Quik-Tatch™ front hitch: Save time switching front implements like a snow blower, rotary broom, or front blade without tools.
  • iMatch™ quick-hitch: Easily hookup Category 1 implements in seconds using three fixed points to back in and pick up rear implements without leaving the seat
    • Position control hitch: Set the rear hitch height and then consistently lower the hitch to the exact height every time, which is especially useful in grading and leveling applications.
  • Quik-Knect™ system: Connect power take-off (PTO)-driven implements quickly and with low physical effort. The Quik-Knect system utilizes one connector for the tractor’s PTO shaft and a designated connector for each implement which eliminates twisting and forcing splines to align.

1 Family Tractors can have up to three implements mounted simultaneously due to standard dual selective control valves (SCVs), allowing you to switch from using one implement to another without stopping to adjust. When a third SCV kit is added, the number of possible combinations is greatly increased.

Quickly and easily change speed and directions with Twin Touch foot controls and Hydrostatic transmission (HST)

Twin Touch™ pedals Twin Touch™ pedals

The hydrostatic transmission’s infinite ground speeds and direction of travel are both controlled with the Twin Touch foot pedals.

  • Ideal for loader or mower applications where frequent direction and speed changes are needed
  • No clutching for fast direction changes
  • Match the job at hand with infinite ground speeds

Excellent maneuverability and easy operation with standard four-wheel drive (4WD) and power steering

Standard 4WD and power steering make 1 Family Tractors excellent for mowing Standard 4WD and power steering make 1 Family Tractors excellent for mowing

Both 4WD and power steering are standard equipment on the 1 Family Tractors. This combination allows for excellent maneuverability and ease of operation.

  • Narrow overall width allows you to work in tight areas where most compact tractors just cannot fit. The 144.8-cm (57-in.) wheel base and 119.4 cm (47 in.) overall width gives great stability for all types of terrain.
  • Power steering means fewer turns of the steering wheel than manual steering, which is especially valuable when mowing around obstacles or during front loader work.
  • High horsepower-to-weight ratio makes the 1 Family Tractors a good choice for a variety of tasks. The overall tractor weight reduces ground compaction and makes them excellent for mowing.
  • The fully-independent power take-off (PTO) allows engaging and disengaging of the PTO without stopping tractor movement. This is important when driving across obstacles such as driveways while mowing.

Comfortable and convenient open operator’s station

Open operator's station (1025R shown) Open operator's station (1025R shown)

The 1023E open operator station is designed for greater comfort and increased visibility.

Comfortable operation

  • Thick, textured rubber floor mat reduces vibrations and absorbs shock and noise.
  • Step-through flat platform and fender-mounted handrails make it easy to get on and off the tractor from either side.
  • Controls are conveniently located next to the fenders and are color-coded for quick identification.
  • Easy-lift hood with dual gas-charged lift struts as standard equipment. A simple flip of the latch lets you open the rugged composite hood, providing wide open access to the engine compartment.
  • Foldable rollover protective structure (ROPS) keeps you protected during operation and improves the ability to store tractor in a garage.
Foldable Roll-Gard ROPS Foldable Roll-Gard ROPS

Foldable Roll-Gard™ ROPS is standard equipment on 1023E.

Mower deck height-adjustment knob
Mower deck height-adjustment knob Mower deck height-adjustment knob
  • The mower deck height-adjustment knob allows the mower height to be adjusted from 2.5 cm to 10.2 cm (1 in. to 4 in.).
  • A spring-loaded detent ensures the height position is locked into place.
  • The transport lock position holds the deck 10.2-cm (4-in.) from the ground, so that rear implements can be used separately while the mower is installed.
Beverage holder and additional storage

One of the greatest customer concerns involves difficulty in attaching tractor implements. John Deere has addressed this issue with the iMatch Quick-Hitch.

The iMatch Quick-Hitch provides easy hookup and a guaranteed fit for all Category 1 implements that are designed to meet the ASAE Category 1 Standard S278.6 for quick-attach hitches.

  • All implements require a set of bushings in order for the attachment to fit and work properly with the iMatch Quick-Hitch. One set of bushings comes with the iMatch Quick-Hitch.

NOTE: In the picture above, you see the bushing set. These bushings allow the hooks on the iMatch and the pins on the implement to fit together properly. All other implements (box blades, tillers, rear blades, etc.) will require a set of bushings to enlarge the pin to fit with the iMatch hooks. Bushings of different lengths can be found in the parts system or through a bushing supplier (see dimensions below).

  • Upper bushing
    • Inside diameter: 0.76-0.77 in.
    • Outside diameter: 1.24-1.25 in.
  • Lower bushings
    • Inside diameter: 0.88 to 0.89 in.
    • Outside diameter: 1.43 to 1.44 in.

JD 1023e

4/5

Besides it having to be fixed four times, it doing good. Extra hours and time at the dealer was a pain in the rear. JD complaint rep didn't call when he said, but a week later. Not a great experience so far with the company, but machine works for now. Bad experience for my first tractor. Hope it gets better, so I can be proud to own JD equipment.

So far the John Deere tractor has been one of the best investments for me. In fact I just got in to the house at 8:30pm because every evening I am excited to get on it and cut and clear pathways on my 10 acres. Mostly wooded so the tractor is small enough to move throughout comfortably for me. I use it to push and tug tree limbs, it’s just fun and relaxing for me.

Never meet (or buy) your hero!

2/5

I had a childhood friend who's family owned a JD dealership, so I've always yearned to own a NEW tractor. We bought a 1023 last fall after I compared three different companies online. After a month one of the pullies blew apart on the mower deck -yes it was covered, but should there have been any question? Then there's the seats on a JD. Is it me or is it a 'gangster seat'? The backrest on the moulded seat is somewhat reclined. I found the same issue of back pain after cutting the grass with our previous Front Mower unit. I called the dealer to inquire what could be done. They offered a 'deluxe' seat. It was no better, except it wasn't moulded so I was able to redrill and tap a new set of holes so the back rest is at 90⁰, yeah it may seem weird but it's a game changer! The mid-PTO control arm dislodged from the PTO because the bolt snapped and the pinch ring washer flew off somewhere. Bare in mind, I use the 1023 to cut about 2ac of grass. Nothing crazy, just cut grass. Really wish there was a grace period to return this tractor, because it wasn't too long after we took possession that we figured the orange one would've been a better choice..sorry..mmmm not sorry!

I’ve had the 1023E for about a month and have been using it almost every day. My biggest complaint is that it is very difficult to put into and out of gear. The gear shift is extremely loose. Of minor concern is the fuel guage is not properly calibrated. Otherwise a great workhorse.

Purchased this tractor primarily for landscaping around our new homestead. The model chosen was the smallest “real” tractor we needed to maneuver around our very tight spaces. Haven’t done much landscaping yet, but we have used it to move large rocks, lift furniture and appliances for our move-in and help neighbors with heavy lifting needs. The machine is easy to operate and does everything we need it to do. Definitely would buy it again. No regrets.

For my needs it’s perfect.

5/5

At 70 years old this is my first tractor. I have 2.5 acres of suburban property in Maine, half of which is wooded that I maintain. I don’t cut my lawn with it.. I have a bucket and forks. I also have waterfront beach property that washes over with 30-40 yards of sand every couple years, normally 1 yards annually. This tractor fits my needs perfectly. 30 hours in first month. If it was a larger unit it would be cumbersome on my property. I can’t think of anything I don’t like about it.

Our 1023e has paid for itself in only 2 years.

5/5

We bought our 1023e (kids named it Scoop) in spring of 2020 to do earthmoving on our hillside mini farm in LA area. We use it for moving and leveling dirt monthly, but also it gets used for about a million other things we WEREN’T expecting to use it for. We move & stack railroad ties for retaining walls, tow farm wagons, push/pull old cars around, and generally use it as a mule around the property. The amount it has saved us on hiring contractors and renting equipment has already covered it’s cost—especially after a couple big rains where we had to clear mud flows and move fallen trees.

The 1023E: Why did I wait so long to get one?!

5/5

Keep in mind I'm old John Deere hand from back in the 60's. I've always been biased towards John Deere due to actual experience with many different tractor and implement manufactures from back then. Today I'm retired, permanently disabled due to my back, and up until now I've not had any relationship with farming and equipment since back then. What a godsend! In three weeks I managed to clear the entirety of my property of tumbleweed, grease plant, assorted other brush, and landscape everything right from the seat of my new John Deere tractor using the 120R bucket loader and the 48" Frontier Box Scraper. All from the comfort of the seat of my tractor which I couldn't believe would be so comfortable. I live in the high desert mountains of California where wildfires are a real threat and weed abatement is a must. I scraped everything down to the desert sand and it looks great! No more fire hazard. On top of that, filled in all the low spots, dressed off the perimeter fence line, and then set to bringing in the firewood. The disk between the vertebrae in my spine is just plain gone. Hence I can't bend over and straighten up to accomplish what most would take for granted. Thanks to my new John Deere tractor and the bucket loader I can simply drive over to the firewood where I have it delivered and stacked, put the bucket down on the ground right next to it, then bend over one time to load the bucket brimming full. Then it's use the bucket loader arms to pull myself back up, slip into the seat, and drive right to the front door where I raise the bucket to chest level and take the firewood from the front door right to the woodstove hearth and stack it. No longer do I have to hope my son shows up to visit to bring in the firewood for me. I can once again do it for myself and have the benefit of enjoying it in the process. Next project, three point hitch mounted PTO driven generator for when the power goes out. Love that iMatch Quick Connect!

Pros

  • comfortable to ride and use
  • small tractor does the big boy jobs
  • nothing runs like a deere

  • needs a three point hitch float position

No support numbers. Hydraulic quick disconnect ...sure disconnect ...just try to connect. Never mind moving levers to lose hydraulic pressure that doesn’t work. Can’t hammer them on even. Can't beat the quality for the money spent

5/5

This tractor has easily done everything I've asked it to do. I bought it with the 120R FEL and the 54" AutoConnect Deck. I've also used it with the attachments I already had, a 4' box blade and a 4' bush hog. It replaced my 2001 445, which also had a 40 FEL and the above mentioned attachments, but the 1023E despite being of the same hp rating is easily 50% to twice as much tractor without being much larger. My 445 served me very well, but now I wish I had purchased the 1023E much sooner. The turning radius is still excellent, 4X4 with low is super powerful. The drive-over deck and quick park loader are actually just as easy as advertised. My only complaint so far is the cheap plastic keepers for the hood panel. So far I've added the ballast box, quick hitch and the quick-tach pallet forks as well. Dumping the bucket and picking up the forks are as easy as un-clipping tow pins and letting the tractor do the rest.

What is with the hydraulics ?

2/5

I purchased this model (1023e my 3rd John Deere) when my GT225 was showing its age at 20yrs. Started off fine but the hoses on the hydraulics lines started showing lots of wear due to Rubbing on either the mower deck of something else. It only has 138 hours on it and one of the lines started leaking. I have had it for 4 years, it now sits in the shop waiting on repair part. Frankly, I am not happy with this model. I have a my 5310 that is a champ at 19 yrs old and my gt225, square baler, disc mower and tedder all are green. The 1023e just hasn't been as reliable as my other Deerequipment

Very Good Tractor

4/5

Never owned a tractor until this 1023e. Watched a bunch of tractor Mike videos, looked at a Kubota and chose John Deere. Power was not an issue because we are suburban on 3 acres. The 1023e is on the low end of Sub Compact power. Meets all of our needs. Also got wheel weights and beet juice in tires. The D120 Pin on Loader was over a thousand bucks less than the H120 Quick Change loader. So we bought the D120. Glad we did. Rarely take the loader off. Twice a year. Its the loader you need and use the most. Only takes 15 minutes to switch it out. Had dealer weld on chain hooks to bucket. Use them a lot. Sips fuel. Oil stays clean. Easy to maintain and keep looking new. We keep it in a garage. 15k is too much to let sit outside. Compared to Kubota I tried, John Deere sounds better and looks better. I thought it looked better built. Plastic hood and fenders are a good idea I think. Dash board is fine. Some complain its dated, Please. Its a tractor. I would rather have my gas gauge on the fender if that's what it takes to make it reliable and accurate. Which it is. The dashboard has all the info you need to maintain and operate. I will admit tractors are hazardous. Careful with kids around. Careful climbing on and off while its running. We started a rule where it has to be shut off before climbing on and off. Otherwise you are relying on the safety systems. Hooked a jacket on the Forward lever too many times. The safety switch stopped the engine every time, thank goodness. Just take it slow all the time and think before acting. Swinging the bucket around will do real damage to your parked car, or getting the PROPS hooked on a branch, or too much weight in loader causing rear wheels to bounce etc. etc..... Respect the PTO. I haven't had these mishaps, however once I started using tractor a few months, all these issues come into play. Love the tractor and the new found tractor culture. Again, very useful piece of equipment.

I worried when I bought this tractor if I could justify the cost and if I really would utilize the loader. I purchased a mower, loader, bush hog and snow blower for my 1023. A year later the answer to was it worth it? You bet it was! We have about 3 acres and a third of it is lawn. The mower cuts beautifully, the snow blower here in coastal Maine is a must have ( I am out there pulling my neighbors truck out of the ditch in a snow storm). With my loader I am moving logs, mulch, loam, gravel, shrubs, trees, pulling posts...the list is endless. Switching attachments was probably the most challenging aspect of the machine but a year in I have manged to go through the cycle without any calls to the dealer and the changes go pretty smoothly.

Yes it has its limitations but i knew that going in. It has done everything that i have asked it to do. Moved 48 tons of ball field dirt. Mowed thigh high grass. Graded, pushed, dug. The wife loves it around the yard. Very easy to use and holds way more than a wheel barrow.

Lots of Uses

4/5

I've had this 1023e for about a year now and it's been used for grading, mowing, moving hay bales (5 ft round), spreading fertilizer, trenching, tilling, discing, planting, and a bunch of other things. I bought an Artillian fork set attachment and their trencher attachment, both of which worked well on the front loader. Low fuel consumption, easy starting, and easy controls, plus quick-attach systems are all big pluses.

Pros

  • good power
  • easy to change attachments
  • relatively quiet

Cons

  • rear lights have been knocked off numerous times
  • pretty tight fit for anyone over 6 ft tall
  • needs led lighting

No Regrets

5/5

I traded an equally powered Kubota BX series due to dealer issues for this tractor. Out of the gate, the 1023e has more power than my Kubota. I have been plowing snow with a 66 inch snow pusher; and snow a foot deep doesn't bog the tractor down one bit. I was skeptical about the auto-attach mower deck, and H120 easy park loader, but refreshingly both work as advertised with no effort. { I will not miss laying on the ground pushing and pulling the 300lb mower deck trying to align the driveshaft splines on my old Kubota}. The 1023e is fuel efficient, and has power to spare. The fit in finish on delivery was excellent, and I found the manuals easy to follow. If you are looking for an all around workhorse for your acreage, or small farm, you can't go wrong with the 1023e.

Pros

  • huge return on the investment
  • extremely powerful yet fuel efficient
  • fit and finish
  • endless supply of attachments available

Cons

  • i did not buy one sooner

Great tractor for 4 acres or less.

5/5

Bought a 1023E for my 2 acre home. Best investment I could have made. I bought mine with a bucket, rear blade and 54" quick release mower deck. The lot needed work, with this little work horse it took no time to level and improve it. Easy to use, powerful for it's size, which makes it just right to fit in the barn and get around tight spots. Unfortunately, too many neighbors are jealous and want to borrow it. It even came in very useful for unloading some heavy equipment (400+ lbs) from my truck recently. Much better than buying a lawn mower and trying to load it up with accesories, this gem is designed to work with buckets and blades.

Pros

  • easy to get on/off of.
  • nice solid hand holds on fenders
  • quick release deck - sweet!
  • digital dash w/hour meter

Cons

  • air filter is a pain to service.
  • neighbors want to borrow it.

Excellent little TRACTOR

5/5

I have owned my 1023e for over a year now and absolutely love it. I have the H120 quick connect loader that is a snap to install and remove, on average I would say connecting and disconnecting the loader is less than two minutes. I also have the 54d mower deck with auto quick connect, this system works excellent. I am on average about one minute connecting and disconnecting the drive over deck. The mowing quality is excellent no scalping an no uneven cut lines. The mower deck has just as good of quality cut as my commercial zero turn (z920m). With this tractor I also purchased a Frontier RT1149 tiller that works awesome and connecting is a breeze with my I-Match quick connect. My Frontier 2048 yard box works great behind my 1023e. I am extremely happy with my tractor and feel it is an exceptional good piece of machinery. I purchased it at Washington Tractors Chehalis location from Robin Henderson and was treated excellent.

Pros

  • appearance
  • quality
  • quick attach mower deck
  • quick attach loader
  • rugged
  • stability
  • ease of use
  • fuel consumption
  • starts great in cold weather

Cons

  • short warranty period

Poor quality, surprisingly fragile!

1/5

Rear implement third point broke on the first day, (it is now still at the dealer, 9 days so far, waiting for someone to look at it). This is supposed to be a solid steel part, you would not expect it to break just because you pushed the Hydraulic lever when the pin is not fully inserted (trying to align the pin so it can be inserted). Ride over mower is extremely hard to mount, the lift arms do not go low enough. Tried for hours, it is now at the dealer, they will check... Field mower wheel fell off after 10 minutes (installed at the dealer with the wrong, too small, pin).

Save your back and purchase a JD.. pays for itself fast!

5/5

I purchased the 1023e a little over a year ago and after putting close to 100 hours on it.. the machine has easily paid for itself. (100 hrs / 8 hrs daily rental = 12.5 days... round to 12 days * $300 a day to rent = $3600 vs $2660 for 0% apr for 72 months) I use the machine weekly around my few acres of land I own. I must have moved close to a 1000 yards of stone, fill, and loam last summer regrading my back yard running 5 hours at a time with no problem. I was able to move and spread 20 yards of dirt within 40 feet of the pile within an hour... try moving that amount of material by hand... will take you all day. I was able to fill the bucket full of riff raff rock and pick it up with the proper counter weight with ease, so if it fits it lifts! Snow removal is a breeze with the float position in the bucket. Was able to push 6 inches a snow down my 150 foot driveway with easy. What took me an hour with the snow blower takes me 20 minutes with the JD. Wife wanted a 500 square foot patio... within an hour had the grass ripped up and site leveled for it. Took longer to rip up the grass closer to the house than anything else. Brought the machine over to my parents land nearby to help clear the near 100 trees that they had taken down. My father could not believe the power the machine had. I was able to lift 8 foot log lengths with ease and stack no problem. Sure would a larger machine be able to carry more tree lengths than 2-3 depending on length and weight...ofcourse but sure saves the back. In conclusion if you value your time and want to work smarter not harder... BUY THIS MACHINE.

Pros

  • time saver
  • powerful
  • workhorse

Cons

  • wish i bought one sooner

I was skeptical of these small tractors. Boy was I surprised. Bought it less than a year ago and it's done everything I've wanted it to do. From mowing grass to tilling to blowing snow with the rear mount blower. Has plenty of power and have about 110 hours on it.

Disappointed in Loader

4/5

My only issue has been with the loader. The power and torque from the engine is good, although having used the 1023 for a while, I would probably pony up for the 1026 were I to buy it again. I have 2 acres to mow, and the 54" mower deck does well without scalping some bumps and hills. I use much less diesel compared to my neighbor's gasoline Deere. I like the relatively soft on/off of the PTO. I have not used the 3 pt on the back for anything but carrying a 450 lb counterweight for the loader. Since the mower is PTO driven, I don't expect any problems when I get a tiller this spring. I have been a little disappointed in the loader. The bucket has good breakout and loading capabilities. I've used it mostly for hauling dirt, hauling rock and moving snow, and a full bucket carries well. One problem I have is the responsiveness varies widely, even over a few minutes and is often very, very slow. The other problem I have is that I can set the bucket at a 30 degree angle and put the boom in float for smoothing backwards, and the bucket will settle to nearly flat under the weight of the boom. This is with a completely empty bucket. I have had Deere out to look at the loader three times. They replaced a leaky cylinder, hydraulic lines, and eventually gave me an enormous pressure limiting valve at the quick connect that slowed the response to something ridiculous that I eventually took back out. The cause could easily be the same for both concerns, maybe a hinky valve. Feels somewhat like air in the lines, but there is no bleed procedure in the manual. Works well enough, I guess, but the loader is out of warranty now, with the dealership not finding a solution. Started out working to my expectations, so I'm not sure what changed.

4/5

I've owed the 1023e for 4.5 years now. It came with the 54" deck and the front loader. I also ordered a 47" pto driven jd tiller. The tiller is great. I've also owned a x495 #now in the x700 series# w/a 62" deck for 10 years now. The x495 is my choice when mowing. Lower center of gravity on the x495 gives a better ride and the 1023e deck seems to scalp a lot. The 1023e has been running rough when I first start it this summer but it always gets going after about 10 seconds of coughing/sputtering. This morning it wouldn't crank. The glow plug light comes on and I could hear the fuel pump but nothing when I turned the key. I suspect a bad operator presence switch. I've never had it stuck and w/weight on the rear, it's great for clearing snow or moving dirt. Big difference is the x495 has NEVER bogged down while mowing tall grass but the 1023e doesn't seem to have the same level of power although the engines are very similar and the 1023e has a smaller deck. I debated the extra $1000. for the additional 2hp when deciding to purchase and now wish I had? The 1023e is great when I'm cutting firewood/cleaning up. Fuel gauge on 1023e seems to be afterthought compared to x495 dash gauge w/backlight. I tolerate the 1023e for mowing but it's great when using for front loader or tilling.

  • tilling
  • front loader

I am very happy with my 1023E, but should have bought a zero turn to do the lawn mowing and just use the tractor for mowing the pasture and plowing. Perhaps the rear deck may work better, but the tractor rocks from side to side and tends to cut into the lawn if set to low. My LX277 never did that no matter what speed I was moving. The bucket is fantastic and the main reason I bought this model, now I need to get some garden implements.

One tough little tractor!

5/5

I expect a lot out of everything I own. So far, my 1023e has done everything I needed it to. Sometimes, I've had to ask it a little differently than I would a bigger tractor, but I've gotten results out of it that I honestly didn't expect to get. This past summer I cut down 37 pines in my yard, most were 22-28 inches in diameter and 60-80 feet tall. My 1023e "bulldozed" all the limbs we cut from the logs, creating a 100' long pile 15' wide and 8' high, and moved and stacked the logs, which were left whole and WAY exceeded anything the tractor is rated to do. Some maintenance, some unexpected repairs (mostly covered by the warranty), and some repairs for things I just tore up...nothing major, and nothing that was too expensive. Speaking of expensive, however...the one downside was what I paid for it...you get a quality little workhorse of a machine, but it's going to cost you a pretty penny!

Pros

  • durable
  • well-designed and executed

Cons

  • expensive!

4/5

The tractor is a breeze to operate. It really surprised me at the power it has the work it can do. The loader is also easy to operate. I have the 60" mowing deck. You can cut a lot of grass fast. The only thing i would change about the mowing deck, is i think the wheels should have been made to swivel 360 degrees. When you are mowing and you turn at least one of the wheels will drag the ground, thus dragging the grass up leaving the ground bare. Other than this, i really do like the whole combination.

There are a few unresolved issues with this product.

3/5

The collection system I purchased with my 1023 has been for the most part a disappointment. It just does not pick up debris the way I have experienced my past systems working. I expected an improvement or at least as good as what I was replacing. Also the 3 point is lacking the ability to put it in a float mode which makes it very ineffective for grading and grooming driveways and landscapes. The snow thrower seems to plow snow at the edges and lets a wake of snow at the edges of every pass which requires a second pass to clean. I have made my dealer aware of all these complaints and have no resolve on any of the issues. They have opened cases on all issues with John Deere. I am happy the way the mower deck cuts grass, and have been pleased with the loader.

Tractor fine, mower deck is junk.

Mower deck is not user friendly. Shuts off every time you back up. Dial that is supposed to remember mower height does not work. Dial is very inaccurate and does not truly indicate mower position. Mower constantly skulls the grass. Insufficient rollers and placed in the wrong position. Previous mower did not of this. Ask Cub Cadet how they did it. Tractor itself is fine, but throws lots of heat back on the operator. Not nice on a summer day. Again mower deck is terrible.

The way the tractor handles in different appications

5/5

Have 1023 with drive over 60' deck w/ loader attachment. Mow approx. 4 acres a week. Does a good job, not as quick as other models but quick enough for me. Does not spread grass like I like, will show up on yard. Did have trouble with under carriage holding deck on, it broke twice before was replace with heavier material. Love the loader option, do a lot of work with this, use this around house/farm and on high school softball field. Problem with loader if there is no a counter weight on back, loader will make wheels lose traction with load in bucket and/or make the tractor very unstable. [which I found out very quickly] The tractor is right size for work on yard work and small farm jobs and works very well with working on softball fields. when I purchased tractor had great problem with hydraulic problems, took several weeks for repairs. one other problem is with the warning lamps on roll bar, when mowing close to bushes or trees that have branches leaning out will catch warning lamps breaking them off need to be reposition to inside of roll bar.

1023E with quick connect mower deck

4/5

I've had the tractor now for a little more than 2 years. Barely put 50 hours on it but I have used enough to know all the features. Overall the tractor is very high quality as you would expect from JD. I have both the detachable front loader and mower deck. Other options include turf tires and hood guard. Generally, the detachable features work very well. My only gripes are 1# that for the mower deck, you must be on complete flat, level surface for the drive on drive off quick connect to work. I have yet to find that perfectly level spot that this is done without getting off the tractor and yanging on the fittings to get it to lock in place. Also, the turf tires. Since the majority of the work ive done with the tractor is non-turf related, should have stuck with the stock traction tires. With a 500-700 lb load in the loader, it really stressed the front turf tires #yes the tires are at full inflation). Overall, I am very happy with the tractor. I did compare to others such as the Kubota but with the features offered as standard and additional add ons, you cant beat the JD series 1's.

  • quick connect mower deck not so quick

love it, easy to use, but quality has us concerned

3/5

We love the tractor, it's easy to use and is plenty powerful enough to do everything we need, from digging post holes, digging out stumps, hauling wood, sand, stone, stonedust, compost, manure, etc. This is our first JD, we have the H120 loader and 260 backhoe. We use it, but don't abuse it. We've had it just under 2 years and have about 70 hours on it. However, we have grown concerned about quality. When we first bought it, within the first 5 hours the hydraulic pump starting making odd noise, we called and found out that there was a PIP (recall), then we were told that it would cost $180 for pick up and drop off for the work to be done, thankfully we had a really good sales person who understood that would be unreasonable when we had owned the tractor for less than two weeks and had only ~7 hours on it. The tractor is kept garaged at all times. The next 65 hours went well, then a month ago we saw a leak on the garage floor under the stabilizer foot for the backhoe and sure enough the stabilizer cylinder was leaking. Thankfully it's still under warranty, but that runs out in another 2 weeks or so and we are worried with two issues already at only 70 hours what may be next... our expectation when buying it was several years and at least 250+ hrs of normal casual use without any issues at all. Hopefully these were just a fluke...

Would not recommend

2/5

Was disappointed that the 1023 E did not compare with the same quality as the 2210: At the out set the battery would not hold a charge, it was replaced. The wire under the seat shorted out and the tractor would not run and had to be repaired. The quick connect mower on more than one occasion fell off the tractor and was run over. I now have pins through the mower to the frame to prevent the mower form falling off the unit. I am displeased with the quality of the purchase.

THE TRACTOR IS GREAT, BUT THE MOWER LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED 62D

4/5

THE TRACTOR, SNOW BLOWER( ALTHOUGH VERY HEAVY) AND BAGGER AS WELL AS FRONT LOADER ARE GREAT. MY PROBLEM WITH THE MOWER IS ITS VERY HARD TO LEVEL. ALSO THE CUTTING HEIGHT DOES NOT HAVE ANY RELATION SHIP TO THE NUMBERS ON THE DIAL. IT IS SET UP FOR 1/2" OR MORE GRADUATIONS. WHEN I LOOKED AT HE MACHINE I WAS EXPECTING 1/4" LIKE ALL THE OTHER MACHINES INCLUDING THE UTILITIES THAT I HAVE OWNED. I HAVE HAD A DIESEL TRACTOR SINCE THE 300 SERIES AND THEN WENT TO THE 860 OR 660 (?) 870 AND SEVERAL OTHERS. I HAVE HAD THE JD DIESEL MACHINES SINCE SOMETIME IN THE SEVENTIES. I AM SEVENTY FIVE YEARS OLD AND NEW WHAT I WANTED. THE DEALER WAS TERRIBLE AND I DID TALK TO A REGIONAL SALES REP TO NO AVAIL. THE HANDBOOK OR OWNERS MANUAL WAS INCOMPLETE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN REISSUED AS YOU REVISED THE 1023E, 1025 AND 1026. MANUAL WAS TOO CONFUSING. I AM ACTUALLY NOT SURE THERE IS ENOUGH POWER FOR THE 62D DECK. THE TIRES REALLY COMPACT THE GRASS, WHEN IT IS LONG. YES I AM A FUSS BUDGET, BUT THIS IS OVER $20,000 PLUS IN EQUIPMENT. THANK YOU FOR THE REQUEST? DAVE I

I brought this tractor after seeing a friend have one. The ease of putting on the attachments and the double peddle for forward and reverse is great. Very versatile machine

4/5

The 1023e is a well thought out machine. The ability to switch out implements by removing just a few pins is outstanding. The loader has an impressive capacity for something so small. I've used it for a little over 50 hours to do everything from mow with the 60D, move 10 yards of fill dirt and 20 yards of rock to make a pad for a portable building, tow a gang reel mower and re-contour a ditch. The only issues I've had are the loader hydraulic couplings leak when disconnected from the tractor even when stored high on the loader and pointed vertically. The front bracket on the mower has gotten caught on the loader frame a couple of times as I've backed off the mower.

Pros

  • versatile

Love the tractor like features in a super-duty mower.

5/5

Very pleased with the equipment overall. Only problem I've had was a leaky radiator overflow reservoir cap which leaked antifreeze coolant, but the dealer replaced it and is now fine. You should add a small heel foot pedal for the differential lock, rather than just a small rod sticking out. I love the tractor as a super-duty mower, which is what we purchased it for.. Ordered it with the Turf tires to be easier on the lawn. Already owned a 2320 with the loader and backhoe, for a tractor. Fuel economy is great compared to the X-700 we had prior to the 1023. Overall, we love it.

Easy to use

4/5

The tractor is a nice size and drives nicely. The hydro pedals work great and all controls are easy to use. The drive in loader is easy to use and works well only limited by tractor size. The only complaints is at 50 hrs a protective cover fell of of the loader ( there to protect lines) will cost about 30 bucks ( it is only held on by zip ties). The drive on deck is easy but not as easy they say, usually mine takes from two to five times to get it to hook. The only other thing is pricing, I could have bought a 1025r for less at a different dealer ( if I had known I would have driven 2 hrs to do it) shop around. But Overall I am happy with the tractor.

Great litttle big tractor

5/5

The attachments are amazing. This is truly a one man/woman tractor in every regard. I did a lot of shopping before buying and hands down this tractor beats the competition in style, power, and ease of use. I would encourage everyone to do their own research and you will find this tractor to be at the top of the list. The one gripe that I have (and I know it's because of safety) would be the deck mount PTO shuts off if you try and mow in reverse. For those that have the belly mower, it can be annoying to drive a full circle just to cut a small section of grass or disengage the PTO reverse and reengage the PTO. I feel this tractor is still small enough to be able to do this. At any rate, awesome tractor. I can see why this model is so popular. Great job, John Deere!

Bought it for ruggedness and to match my John Deere hat

5/5

Have driven tractors a lot when young, but this was my first purchase. I explained to the dealer salesman what I wanted it to do, and he advised me on the choices of attachments. It was last fall so I got the sale which included an extra attachment. Use tractor to level gravel driveway, make trails through the woods, move mulch, and move rocks off trail to form a garden barrier. Recently bought a bush hog attachment. My main suggestion is to improve the manual, in particular the illustration of the controls - it is hard to read and figure out exactly where each control is located. Surely some high quality images with arrows would cost little as an addition. For example, the bush hog was my first need of PTO and it was very difficult to identify the control location.

Pros

  • ruggedness of construction

Cons

  • poorly illustrated manual for controls

I like everything about this tractor except the exhaust and transmission noise level. I don't have a DBA meter so I can't report the level but compared to other similar tractors I have driven it's definitely the loudest. a.The seat could stand to be a suspension seat, like the 1025R has. The extra cost per unit wouldn't be detrimental to overall pricing on this particular unit. b. I re-located the rear lights to the inside of the ROPS bars vs: outboard as delivered. Less worries regarding accidently hitting them on low hanging branches. c. I installed the block heater myself, could have been engineered in a more user-friendly position like the right side of engine vs: all the way to the rear of the engine against the firewall. d. Sheet metal vs: plastic would have been nice. e. Hermetically sealed glass dash vs: plastic is an idea.

1023e is not a good little tractor.

2/5

I have been pro John Deere and have owned many. This little tractor by far fails on quality. High fuel consumption, low on power when mowing grass. Mows bad. Leaves streaks, mows uneven. I have done all proper alignments and this things mow quality is terrible. Mow quality is worse when mowing any kind of incline or hill. The 60 inch auto connect is a joke. I spend more time getting deck connected than I did with old mower that I jacked up and manually removed deck. Height adjustment knob has never worked properly. I have to remove the knob and use pliers to adjust height setting. I have replaced two deck bearings in under 60 hours. When running the deck sounds like it is going to fall apart. I would take my old 445 over this thing any day. My friend has a 1026r and it is no better. Mows terrible. Seat was broke after 30 hours. I had to weld a bracket on it. I think this is a Chinese made tractor with Green Paint and if it is not then John Deere should be ashamed. I would not buy another 1023e or 1026-25 series tractor and I would not recommend anyone buy one.

3/5

Some things about this tractor are excellent, like the drive-on mower deck. Other things, like the plastic hood and the exposed fuel line are not good. In the 3 years I've owned this tractor, I've replaced the mower gear box, fixed the 3-point hitch, replaced a damaged fuel line and determined that it just plain won't run in winter without fuel treatment. I expected more from Deere and from one of the highest priced products in the category

I got the standard front loader on my 1023E, not the quick connect option. The dealer demonstrated the standard loader removal & reattachment procedure. Simple and easy enough. However on my tractor I have some issues attaching & removing the loader. The top right pin is always very difficult to remove and replace while the other pins are able to be removed and/or installed with no effort whatsoever. It is as if the top right attachment hole is misaligned. I have told the dealer about this problem and their response was " well thats just the way it is sometimes". Very disappointing and no effort to address the problem. The bucket is always removed and reattached on a level concert garage floor. The tractor is less than 1 year old.

Punches above its weight

The 1023E is nimble enough to get into tight places where a larger tractor would do too much damage to turf and ornamental plants or where a larger vehicle just won't fit. I saved several thousand dollars by digging up my own water pipe to locate a leak. It did a good job of clearing snow off a quarter mile of local road (several times) with the front end loader. I do not have the time and you do not have the space to list a fraction of the tasks done by this tractor. 5/5

This machine has many different functions but the main ones for us are the mower and the loader. it is very easy to attach the mower deck and cut grass. The turning radius is remarkably tight and the 7 iron mower deck is rugged and strong. My wife clears the snow from our driveway with the loader bucket when I'm at work clearing parking lots. I've used the loader for many things including hauling tree trunks and brush, loading stone, dirt, mulch and any other item normally put in a wheelbarrow. The controls are simple and we both agree...It's fun

5/5

The only thing I would change on the tractor is the deck height adjustment. The dial can be difficult to turn at times. Other than that the tractor is the perfect size for me. It's not to big of a mower and can still maneuver in tight spaces. It can clear snow with the loader and a rear blade, smooths my driveway, and hauls small square bales around. The tractor is perfect on a 10" post hole digger and we are still finding uses for it.
