Best Sprayers for Pests and Weeds: Essential Equipment for Farmers
Pests and weeds can quickly wreak havoc on your farm if you aren’t careful and diligent with your control efforts. That’s why when it comes to effectively managing pests and weeds on your property, having a suitable sprayer can make all the difference.
You may have questions about which sprayer is right for your farm size, crops, or budget. There are tons of options available, and John Deere manufactures most of the best sprayers on the market. John Deere offers many sprayer sizes, from the smaller 400 series and midsize 600 series to large-scale, top-of-the-line Hagie STS Sprayers. Whatever you need, Heritage Tractor can provide you with the right equipment.
Let’s examine the different sprayers available on the market and help you decide which is most appropriate for your farm.

Small Scale Sprayers
Let’s begin with small-scale sprayers like the John Deere R4023. Because of its small size, the R4023 is built for maneuverability, versatility, and affordability. Thanks to its 600-gallon capacity tank, this sprayer can tackle smaller jobs. The smaller boom arms on the R4023 include a folding feature that allows the operator to fold the boom quickly for sharp turns or small spaces. The boom arms extend up to 90 feet and have a spraying speed of up to 20 miles per hour for fast and accurate application of weed and pest control. The Turbocharged PowerTech PSS 4.5-liter Tier 4 diesel engine delivers 173 horsepower.
Bumps, rolls, and hills on the job are no problem, thanks to the Soft Soft Technology, which helps to absorb bumps from uneven terrain and provides a smoother ride for the operator. If you need a sprayer for a smaller plot of land but can still do the job with precision and efficiency, the R4023 is the best sprayer for you.
Take a Look at the R4023400 Series SPrayers
The John Deere 400 Series Sprayers, or 4 Series, are great for small to medium-sized farms. These sprayers range in horsepower from 280 hp on the 408R to 326 hp on the 412R, which is the top-of-the-line 4 Series Sprayer. Each sprayer includes a holding tank for your preferred solution. These range from the smaller 800-gallon tank on the 408R to the large-capacity 1,200-gallon tank on the 412R. The larger tank of the 412R allows you to apply solutions, whether herbicide or pesticide, for more extended periods of time without refilling.
With the 4 Series Sprayers, you also get access to John Deere’s ExactApply system, which consistently and more accurately applies solutions to your crops so you can cover more acres in less time. For comfort and stability, the CommandDrive powertrain gives you a quieter ride inside the sprayer’s cabin, and the Boomtrac Pro 2 system can handle any bumps, rolls or hills you encounter.
Each sprayer, from the 400 Series to the 600 Series, has a boom arm width of up to 132 feet to ensure precision in reaching every plant. If you’re curious about the 400 Series Sprayers, check out our inventory online and request a quote.

Wet application isn’t the only way to spray for weeds and pests; dry spinners are also available that can handle various pest and weed control jobs. John Deere manufactures the excellent 400R and 600R Dry Spinner Spreaders. These spreaders are great for applying dry, granular materials such as fertilizers, lime, or dry herbicide formulations. The 400R is the smaller of the two spreaders and includes a 200 cubic foot dry box for holding dry solution. The 400R also has a 326 horsepower, 9.0-liter engine, and it has a top transport speed of 35 miles per hour. You can also upgrade the New Leader DS20 dry box to the larger DS30 dry box, with a total capacity of 300 cubic feet of dry material.
The 600R includes either the 200 or 300 cubic feet dry box, depending on your needs. The additional 375 horsepower lets you handle larger tasks quickly and efficiently. Precision ag technology upgrades help to automate and optimize your spraying jobs, so you can significantly increase your yield each season.
Dry Spinner Spreaders like the 400R and 600R are great pest and weed control application options for farmers who prefer dry solutions to wet solutions.
