Features

Powerful V-twin engine features full-pressure lubrication for dependability and long life

22-hp (16.4-kW) engine (shown on U.S. model) 22-hp (16.4-kW) engine (shown on U.S. model)

A 22-hp (16.4-kW) V-twin engine has plenty of power and torque to handle tough mowing, mulching, and bagging:

  • V-twin cylinder design for greater torque, lower vibration, and improved sound quality
  • Electronic ignition for fast starts
  • Spring-return feature to ensure the operator does not mistakenly leave the throttle lever in the choke position
  • Cast-iron cylinder liners for longer engine life
  • Overhead valves for excellent power and fuel economy
  • Full-pressure lubrication and oil filter for cleaner oil, prolonging engine life and extending the time between oil changes
    • More effective when operating the tractor on an incline

    • The sealed fuel cap helps keep vapors inside the tank.

John Deere Easy Change™ 30-second oil change system

John Deere Easy Change 30-second oil change system John Deere Easy Change 30-second oil change system

The John Deere Easy Change 30-second oil change system makes changing the engine oil easy, quick, and clean. Changing the oil is as easy as twisting on a new oil-filled filter. Oil does not need to be drained from the engine.

The John Deere Easy Change filter is an additional engine oil reservoir. Changing the filter removes the captured contaminants and replaces about 0.8 qt (0.76 L) of engine oil.

The functionality does not stop with ease of use. The Easy Change oil system has several meaningful benefits over the traditional oil filter system of the 100 Series:

  • A synthetic filter material is used for more predictable filtering and longer life.
  • Filtering capacity is greater than with a standard oil filter.
    • More filter surface area
    • More oil flow capacity
  • The system has 40 percent more oil volume.
  • The oil and engine run cooler.
  • The oil filter valve closes whenever the engine stops, so filtered particles are captured and cannot drain back into the engine.
  • The risk of spilling during oil service is greatly reduced.
  • Waste oil (and new oil production) is reduced by over 1,000,000 lb (453,592.4 kg) per tractor production year.
  • This system is not a compromise to just make oil changes easier—these engines pass the same John Deere expectations and rigorous testing as always.

Partly due to these improvements, it is not necessary to remove and dispose of all the oil in the engine during service.

Everyone who uses the John Deere Easy Change system saves time and avoids the mess of a traditional oil change. In the past, many 100 Series Lawn Tractor owners rarely or never got around to changing their engine oil. With  the 30-second oil change, even people who previously would not consider changing the oil themselves can easily do it. The Easy Change system is a no-mess, no-fuss solution the competition cannot match.

Installation instructions are in the Operator’s Manual and in the John Deere Easy Change service part box.

Please recycle. Many local government recycling programs, authorized retailers, auto-service centers, and auto-parts stores will puncture and recycle used oil filters and oil.

6.5-bu (229-L) rear bagger 6.5-bu (229-L) rear bagger The hopper design provides efficient bagging performance, clean operation, and easy-to-empty bags: Two durable bags with a generous, 6.5-bu (229-L) capacity lift out for emptying and are easy to reinstall. Efficient lower chute provides smooth flow of material to reduce chance of plugging. An air-exhaust duct directs air from the hopper back and toward the ground for clean operation. A convenient bungee-cord fastener makes opening and closing the hopper easy. It is easy to install and remove the hopper, and no tools are required after the initial installation. Pins and spring clips hold the hopper and chute in place; there is nothing left to interfere with other attachments when removed. Loose-knit bags allow more air to flow through to provide complete bag filling in wet and heavy grass conditions. Front Blade

46-in. (117-cm) Front Blade The front blade is excellent for pushing light snow or other loose material. The blade is constructed for good performance and long life: Blade surface is curved to roll rather than push material, which requires less power and increased blade capacity. Bolt-on, replaceable cutting edge takes most of the wear to greatly extend the useful life of the blade. For operator convenience, the blade comes with standard equipment for controlling it from the tractor seat: Blade can be angled left, right, or used in the straight-ahead position. Full working range Full working range The 46-in. (117-cm) blade can be operated up to 6.5 in. 8-oz (237-mL) Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer John Deere Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer is a unique formula developed to ensure optimum performance and protection year-round:  Has corrosion preventers For lawn and garden equipment and other gasoline-powered vehicles Ensures quick starts in all two- and four-cycle engines Use in gasoline, gasoline-oil mixture, and ethanol blends Use to treat gas cans at each fill-up or use at every fill-up of vehicle Keeps fuel fresh for 12 months Contains a fuel injector and carburetor cleaner 1 oz (29.6 mL) treats 2 gal. (7.6 L) Always use fuel stabilizer in gasoline.Fuel sitting in gas tanks or gas containers for more than 30 days begins to degrade. Also, blended fuels and water in gasoline can form acids that corrode fuel-system components. Protect the investment - use John Deere fuel stabilizer with corrosion preventers and prevent hard starting, surging, lack of power, poor idle, flooding, and will not run or stay running conditions caused by poor-quality fuel. Ask a local John Deere dealer or visit John Deere Parts. Helpful tips: Add fuel stabilizer every time fuel is purchased. Deere gasoline-powered equipment is recommended to run on a minimum of 87 octane gasoline. John Deere Fuel-Protect for gasoline is safe to use in all types of gasoline, including gasoline/oil mixtures and blended fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol. Use plastic fuel containers to store fuel; ask a local John Deere dealer. For best results, use a spill-proof gas can that automatically seals the gas can vent. Store fuel in a cool, dry, dark place in a sealed fuel can. Fill tank to the top every time the machine is put away. Make sure tank is drained if stored for the winter or treated if left for prolonged periods of time. Please refer to the operator’s manual for additional recommendations and warranty information.Fuel related issues are not considered a warrantable condition as there is no defect in the materials or workmanship of the machine.  For more information on fuel, visit John Deere Groundscare.

Tire Chains

TerraGrip Traction Belt Protect your driving surface. TerraGrip Traction Belts offer enhanced traction on snow, mud, dirt, wet asphalt, and wet concrete surfaces. They will not scratch or chip concrete, asphalt, or aggregate drives or walkways. The proven reliability of the traditional steel chain attachment system is used and combined with the performance and durability of reinforced rubber slats. The rubber slats wrap around the tire so only rubber touches the driving surface. The result is aggressive traction without the risk of surface damage, that can happen with traditional chains. Features: Rubber slats surround the tire and will not damage driveways or sidewalks. No steel touches the driving surface. No-tools installation utilizes a traditional steel chain attachment system. Traction is improved on all surfaces, especially loose material (snow, dirt, mud, sand, etc.). TerraGrip Traction Belts are approved for John Deere 100, 200, X300, X500 M-T, and X700 Series Tractors. Additional information for 4-wheel-steer tractor models: X700 Series – requires wheel spacer sold separately X500 Series – requires wheel stop adjustment X300 Series – no additional requirements

Mower won't start after 10hoursof use

1/5

Another piece of garbage product bought from the home depot. After 10 hours this machine not start. Why!?? This is the 2nd mower I've bought from home depot in less than 6 months. Somebody needs to come start this machine now or come pick it up because I will NOT pay anymore on it!

Gas gauge reads 6.0

2/5

Gas gauge on S120 showing hieroglyphics then morphs into 6.0. This seems to be a well-documented issue, yet I have seen no published solution.

The one electronic gauge is a FAIL.

2/5

Runs ok so far at 15 hrs but gas gauge only reads the number 6. So the gas gauge is out to lunch at 15 hrs. I thought I shouldn't be having trouble at just 15 hrs.with a new mower. I see many people on line have the same problem with no solution.

S120

4/5

Nice upgrade over my 2003 L110 which had 605 hrs on it. I like all the features although a bit disappointed that it needed to be serviced with about 12 hrs on it, as the belt on the cutting drive snapped! Didn't hit anything, driving on flat ground, and bang, snapped.

Great Mower!

5/5

I purchased this mower as a backup mower for a large lawn. It does the job well. The only feature that I didn't like is that you can't judge how much gas you are putting in the tank. The black cage in front of the gas tank blocks the view.

5/5

This is a solid mower at an affordable price. I never really looked at John Deere before because I anticipated a high price; however, when my 15 year old Craftsman gave out I was pleasantly surprised that the John Deere was about the same price that I paid for the Craftsman! The S120 is a solid machine. I am also impressed with the Easy Change oil system.

AWESOME machine!

5/5

I don't have a large yard, but I do have a bad back, so push mowing became a 2-1/2 hour (normally 1 hour) chore. Now I can do 20 minutes of push mowing around the periphery, and do the rest on the S120 and be done in less than 60 minutes! The BEST $3000.00 I've EVER spent!

I bought my S120 a few weeks ago. Have used it 3 times now. The belt is noisy when it engages. So bad, a neighbor a few doors down asked my wife what was wrong with it. I called customer support . I got the impression this was normal. I don't think so. Now that I have read the revies, I'm thinking about taking it back to Home Depot.

5/5

The S120 does a good job of a quality cut, therefore my lawn looks better. With the twin cylinder engine, the mower runs much smoother than my single cylinder engine mower. And with a 42" cut I spend more time relaxing on my patio. The unit is also a little bit quieter than my older mower. It also appears to run cleaner.

Great product with great delivery service

5/5

Great product delivered professionally. We had previously tried to buy one of these mowers from a big box store and they tried to deliver it to us with a moldy seat and chain mark dings all over it (because it had been sitting outside). We decided we would go ahead and pay a little more and it was the best decision. Not only was the mower delivered in pristine condition we unexpectedly received a tutorial with great tips from Jamie at James River Equipment who delivered the mower to us. In fact one of the tips Jamie gave us came in handy the first time we used the mower. Jamie also gave us his personal cell number and told us to call anytime we had a problem. Great product and with great delivery by James River Equipment.

4/5

So far I am very satisfied with my mower. The only issue I have is with the safety feature attached to the seat. I have several low banks on my lawn and when I shift my weight on the seat the mower wants to shut off. I unplugged that feature and the mower wouldn’t start. Plugged it back in and it works fine. Quite annoying actually.

The S120 is great. But the bagger is not so great

3/5

The Tractor it's self seems to be great, although I've only had it about 3 months with a little over 6.5 hrs on it. The reason I gave it only 3 stars is because of the bagging attachment. Here's the problems I find with the bagging attachment. 1. The blades that came with the bagging attachment produce a lot more vibration than the stock blades did. I've checked the blades for balance and as best as I can tell they are balanced. 2. The bags are cheaply made with light duty plastic frames. 3. The brackets that hold the bag frames allow a lot of grass to collect in them and requires being cleaned out to be able to get the bags back in them after dumping. 4. With only 1 side of the bags having mesh fabric, I don't think they let enough air through them as there is a lot of cut grass/leaves that blow out from under the mower deck. Like the blades are trying to blow more air up the chute than the chute/bags can handle. 5. The way the chute attaches to the mower deck is a pain in the butt. I thought the attachment for my old Troy Built was bad, but it is much better than J.D. I'm 74 years old, and getting down on my hands and knees to remove or install the chute is really hard for me to do. 6. It would also be nice if the lid covering the bags would open up further. By the time the Right bag is almost full, the Left one is over full and if you try to remove the Left bag without moving some of the grass piled up, it will get knocked off because the lid won't open far enough to clear the pile.

Worst mower I ever Bought.

1/5

I bought a 120 mower from Valley Center Ca. John Deere. A real piece of junk and not covered by manufacturer. I will never ever buy a John Deere again!!!! They told the manufacturer does not cover any problems!! It only has 12.3 hours and nobody will even buy it from me. I am ready to junk the piece garbage!! You will never get the chance to take my again and I will tell everyone I know about the junk John Deere!!!!!!!

I bought the 120 and it fits the need I have. Really happy with the cutting and all the features, except for the backup button. Every penny spent to buy it gets so much more

5/5

I am a long term owner. My John Deere V-Twin is not a toy, like other, cheaper brands. Compare deck thickness, deck adjustment linkage (thicker, simpler, stronger), front axle metal (cast iron versus sheet metal stampings,) turning radius, paint quality, blade thickness, transmission design (Aluminum hydrostatic versus plastic continuously variable). If you want a quality riding mower, get a V-Twin John Deere and change the oil every year. Every extra penny spent to buy it gets so much more machine than other"big-box" generic brands that will not last as long or be as easy to live with.

John Deere Green is my favorite color....too bad the cutting deck does not float over the dips and rises in my lawn. It tends to scalp the uneven surfaces rather than following the contours and changes. Makes it look as if the deck height needs adjusting. Mower design doesn't deserve the best rating.

I bought at the end of my yard care season so only have 3 hours on it at this time so not really able to give a realistic evaluation yet. I do know in comparison to the LA120 I replaced with the new machine it is harder to start and the throttle sticks and is harder to adjust. But I have not used it enough yet to know if there is a problem or not. The reason I bought the replacement is the transmission leaked all the oil/grease out of the old one and it was very expensive to fix.

used it for one summer and so far, a very good machine. I'm very happy with this model including the easy bag removal. Not fan of the expensive oil filter cost / oil change process. One item hat is frustrating is that when operating pedals, the right foot is the complete opposite from a driving vehicle. The far-right pedal should be the accelerator, and if possible, the pedal next to it should be the breaking pedal. Yes, I've adapted and adjusted, I am just saying can the engineers make the adjustment?

5/5

Bought the S120 this year to replace my old LT150 that I've had since 2005. Plenty of thought went into making the improvements hat really count. Love the power and smoothness of the V-Twin engine, the improved turning radius, and the bagging system. The cutting height lever is a big improvement over the old dial system, but can be easily knocked out of position when getting off the tractor to empty the bags. Only other negative is the expensive and controversial quick change oil filer system. Could have done without this gimmick. But overall, a great product and a pleasure to use!

3/5

I was disappointed in this mower and ended up returning it. JD does have a great return policy, but the unit itself was not what I’d expected. There was a vibration in the steering wheel that would make my hands go numb, and there was a horrible noise when engaging the PTO. To be fair, I did not give the dealership a chance to fix the issue. I just wanted out. I was told by someone at the dealer, that this is just to be expected in the low end or entry level tractors. It’s not until you get into the higher-end, or more expensive ones, that you can begin to expect a sort of amazing quality. While I don’t doubt this, I find it sad. So I went to a local Toro dealer and bought their entry level zero turn, and have been very happy and have not looked back.

I purchased the mower to replace my1988 165 lawn tractor. The new one is much easier to operate, safer, and twin cylinder engine starts and runs very smoothly. Also the price was very reasonable.

Nightmare machine

1/5

Bought this from a JD dealership new. Have used it 7 years mainly for fall leaves. Rarely used for weekly grass mowing because it is cumbersome around our treed lot. It has been a nightmare machine & worse than the 18 year old Troy-Bilt we were replacing. Lawn is under 1 acre. Deck maintenance is a nightmare. Eats belts and has persistent electrical issues. Don’t waste your money.

Great mower

5/5

I bought the mower early 2021 and have used it for two years. The mower does a great job doing what it does. Starts up easy, oil change super easy, gas fill not terribly hard just have to go slow as it fills up. I also bought the bagger for this mower and it works alright. I have broken a number of belts but I found out the problem was that one side is beveled and that is the side that has to go into the guides. I was putting them on backwards causing them to slip off the guide after I brought it out of mowing and then back into mowing. 10/10 would buy again.

Reliable and powerful

5/5

Have owned for 2 1/2 years, bought from HD, dealer no stock. Always starts, takes a few tries below -20C. Only problem is wear rips in seat from cold weather use, cover stiff when cold, hood scratches easy. Use for cutting large lawns, pushing snow with JD plow, carting various things with small trailer, firewood..... I dont know why people report problems with belt falling off, ive never had a belt come off, mower always engages, its easy to put the mower belt on wrong. Have not had to replace belts. Did replace transaxle fluid with correct type (expensive) and now is much more responsive. I clean/grease/sharpen it regularily, changed the easy change filter to regular type. recommend 10w30 turf guard, tried 5w30 mobile1 and it foams.

Generally a very good riding mower.

4/5

I have had a previous model - an LA 135. This one is not quite as good as that one, but is a near replacement. Both are versatile and fairly easily maintained lawn equipment and mow grass well. I use mine for probably rougher purposes than intended and both have held up well for that. After bush hogging (which leaves a high cut) my flowerbeds, I run over with mower, cutting stalks. It does the job. I wish it had the front bumper as did my 135, especially with the 'creep' problem below. Pros: Starts easily. Cuts well. Pulls my lawn mower utility trailer. Pulls my sprayer. Safety feature (backup button, etc). Deck can be pretty easily leveled for even cuts. I like the manual blade engage - I can baby it when the blade belt is getting worn, and get through the rest of my mowing, whereas I find with an abrupt engagement (as per automatics) the belt is more likely to jump off and demand immediate replacement. Pretty tough machine. Cons: 1) I hate the fuel tank. It has an angled filler tube and it's very hard to see how full the tank is until it's overflowing. You can see into the filler tube, but not readily into the tank. The old vertical opening in my LA135 was much better. 2) It won't stop. If I stop (brake), and then let off brake with engine running it will creep forward about a foot / second. It should sit still unless on an incline. Probably got an adjustment issue and not present in all individual units. 3) I don't like the "EZ change" oil system. I prefer clean oil. You can get a conversion kit (I did) to return it to conventional system. I use a pump extractor through the filler tube for all of my small engine equipment. Less mess and cleaner oil than EZ change. If you really don't like changing oil and have the $$ - then the EZ system is probably pretty good. Certainly better than not changing oil at all. I'd buy it again. It had good reliability, toughness, and features for the price range.

A real workhorse!

5/5

We purchased this tractor primarily for mowing lawns on a rather steep grade. The S120 with Briggs and Stratton engine has plenty of power for the job. We extended the work to cover hauling after we purchased the JD dump trailer, and then a chipper/shredder. Now we use the tractor for snow removal with the JD snow blower attachment. Nothing short of awesome and it's good for the machinery to be used all year. The JD maintenance products are very user friendly and so, we full heartedly recommend this and other John Deere products.

I Love This Mower with One Exception

4/5

I purchased when the S120 first came out at Home Depot. I have had no issues with the starting. It starts right up with very little choking time. Just push the lever all the way up and it starts right up. Never been an issue. The tractor goes along quite well and mows the grass really well, especially with newly sharpened blades. It's quite good on gas. I can mow approximately four and a half acres, about five hours, with about one and a half tanks full. The only issue I have is, as others have said, it does break blade drive belts. I'm on my third belt, including the one it came with, since I purchased it and have only about 35 hours on it. Not great in that respect.

Not near as good as my 12 year old LA120

3/5

Mower drive belt came off and after putting it back on it broke after only 10 hours on new mower. My old LA120 has over 500 hours and still has original belt. John Deere would not cover the belt breaking for warranty. Looking at other reviews this may be an on going problem. Time will tell ! This mower does not seem to be as solid as my older one either.

Not for non-level lawns

1/5

I bought this John Deere tractor to help with cutting the lawn on my 1-acre lot and to move around lawn equipment and materials in a JD tow behind trailer. My lawn has slight to moderate slopes in it and this tractor does a terrible job giving me a level mowing. Streaks of uneven grass cuts and colors are everywhere as the mower deck doesn't adjust to uneven surfaces. I have leveled the deck, but with just 2 rollers located in the front of the deck, there is absolutely no control of the deck being level on uneven slopes. A fresh cut lawn leaves me frustrated as it is very unsightly. I wish they had after-market rollers that could be added to stabilize the mower deck. Husquvarna has I believe 6 rollers that would do a much better job. The tow behind trailer also is too much for this little tractor to pull anything up on even a moderate slope. The wheels spin and rip out sod trying to get a grip. The quick change oil is very expensive and just another way for JD to increase revenue at the expense of the customer. Very disappointed with JD. Waste of my money and time cutting the grass.

I bought this a few weeks ago and have used it several times. It handles beautifully and easy starts and engaging mower. I like the way I control the speed and it turns on a dime. It feels comfortable to sit on with good leg room. It cleans up easy with the hose hookup on the mower and the quality of the machine is typical Deere.

Nice Machine, easy to maintain

5/5

Bought this from Home Depot. It arrived and was setup by my local John Deere dealer. They did a nice job. I had to watch a few youtube videos about maintenance, and I set myself up with some tools to make it easier but overall I like this machine. It's now 2 years old. I have changed the oil twice, replaced mower blades and greased it. I ended up buying a bagger and cart to go with it. Just makes my yard work that much easier. I do tend to baby it, using only trufuel in the tank. A little pricey but I have had great luck with it in all my engines. Now though, I do wish Deere would look into offering an electric version of this machine. That would be my next upgrade if I go that direction.

Mower belt loose and not engaging.

I bought my S120 riding mower from the local home depot in February 2022. When first used it ran good no problems, used at least once weekly. The started having problems with the blades not engaging, belt jumping off track, and finally belt breaking. I purchased a new belt, installed myself, mowed a little bit then it broke also.

Purchased this baby in March 2022 with the custom installed bagger system... I have used her a few times, including on a fairly steep incline. She performs great. Only issue is if I turn her off on any kind of slope she refuses to start until I push her to flat ground then starts right up and keeps going. If I could give it a 4.75 I would!!

20 minutes and then useless.

1/5

We bought this 10 days ago, just started it this morning. Had fun learning how to use it, then after 20 minutes of mowing it didn't have the power to go up a slight incline, let alone climb an kind of hill. Came to this site and read various reviews, CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP as the canned response recommended. They are making plans to come out and pick it up. THEN I looked under the hood... Oil puddles and sprays, leaking profusely. Full replacement or full refund expected. Will provide another review if the customer service is satisfactory.

Good lawn tractor

5/5

Bought this in March of 2021 from Greenmark and it was delivered ready to go. All points were lubed by Greenmark before I used it and it was set up with the options I wanted to use at that time. Dealers like Greenmark are much better than Lowes or Home Depot and take care so that the tractor is done right. I have not had any problems. I have many of the attachments and I use it for more than just lawn care. It is kind of a gas hog but worth it.

I bought this at the beginning of the summer because it was the only model available in my area due to mower shortages. Very easy to operate and understand. Starts and runs well. Only complaint is the hour meter died on it after a month of use. Warranty process is a mess.. Home Depot doesnt want to touch it, and authorized repair centers want me to go to Home Depot. Hindsight

2/5

I have owned this mower for around 4 months. Within the first 4 mows (4 hours) the belt had come off probably ten times; finally resulting in belt tearing in two. I contacted the dealer and they, of course, blamed it on user error. I replaced the belt, which the dealer made me purchase, despite it being a new mower. Here we are again - a couple of months later. The belt has been throwing off. Today, resulting in 2 major gashes into the belt. This belt will break within the next couple of mows. Do not buy this mower. If I could get a refund, I would take it.
